The View OCTOBER 2017 Volume XIV Issue X Presbyterian Men Tour Georgia Power Plant By Bruce Morgan First Presbyterian Church 147 N. Main St. Cleveland, GA 30528 706-865-6499 Pastor: Rev. Andy Chambers pastor@fpccleveland.org Office: info@fpccleveland.org Fourteen men thoroughly enjoyed a tour of Georgia Power sites around Tallulah Falls. We were given very interesting information about the development of the power generating plants that use hydro power from several North Georgia lakes. The plants and their equipment date from the early 1900s and are unique in the industry. We all agreed that we want to return to ride the incline down to the larger plant at the bottom of Tallulah Gorge that we did not get to tour. The trip was made more special as Hugh Walters shared his experiences as a Georgia Power employee. Lunch at Blue Creek in Hollywood was excellent and affordable. Our church life is made richer by the fellowship and experiences we have with brothers in Christ. OCTOBER 2017 3 THANK YOU THANKS Penny and Kim If you haven t toured around the FPC facility lately you might be surprised. Quietly working, painting, rearranging and generally making things look better for the last couple of years, is the dynamic mother daughter duo of Penny Murdoch and Kim Ciriello. You may have noticed their paint and decorations in our restrooms, prayer room, and classrooms, but there is more. This past spring the second men s bathroom was reworked to become a bathroom for families with small children and for use with the children in The Growing Place. They took a newly painted, reworked room and added color, decorations and functionality, making it look kid friendly and welcoming. Most recently they have done the same thing to the church Nursery. They not only painted the walls but painted Bible characters on the wall as well as cleaned, decluttered and organized to made the room look fresh and updated, something that was surely needed. Come and look and be prepared to be impressed. Our sincere thanks to Penny and Kim (and their support staff of Bob and Dave) who saw a need and did something about it. They used their talents, hard work and monetary gifts, not asking for anything in return. They have made a positive difference in our church facility. Thank you, Thank you! By Melody Thomason THANKS Carolyn and Robert Most of us enjoy the beauty of our exterior plantings without really thinking about how it stays so attractive. Well, two people have taken on the task of trimming and cleaning out around our plantings and we owe a vote of thanks to Carolyn Brooks and Robert Davis for their tireless efforts. By Bruce Morgan OCTOBER 1 WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY PASTOR ANDY S LAST DAY WITH US October 1 is World Communion Sunday and also Pastor Andy's last day with us. There will be a covered dish lunch to follow Worship. The church will provide the meat. Everyone is asked to bring their favorite side dish or dessert to send off Pastor Andy with our famous FPC hospitality! By Debbie Wessely

OCTOBER 2017 6 PRESBYTERIAN MEN By Bruce Morgan by Bruce Morgan The PM will meet one week later than our usual second Tuesday on October 17th for dinner and fellowship at 6:00 in the Fellowship Hall. After we were washed out by Irma last month we have much to discuss and our meditation will be based on Noah and the flood. Columbarium Update Sadly, for those who were interested in placing their remains in the columbarium, we are not able to proceed with the plans as presented. We did have several members that committed to the plan but we did not reach the threshold that would have funded the project. A columbarium program is a welcome addition to the ministry of many churches and will be "on hold" until we are large enough to offer that to our members. By Bruce Morgan May the Lord bless this house and all who dwell within. Judy Winski who chairs Habitat's Family Selection Committee shares a few comments during the house dedication. Habitat for Humanities House Dedication Phil Baughman congratulates Pastor Andy on a great job of blessing the house. Andy is also a board member for Habitat and has also helped with building on House #69. Mesha Brown, recipient of the last Habitat House build #68 reads scripture as she presents a new family bible to the Brown Family who will be moving into their new Habitat Home very soon.

SEPTEMBER 2017 7 Mission Team And Education News OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD It's that wonderful Operation Christmas Child time of the year already! Once again FPC will be participating in one of our favorite activities, packing shoeboxes for underprivileged children in other countries. The packing party will take place Wednesday night November 8, 2017. We will eat pizza at 5:30 then pack. You can pack your own shoebox ahead of time or you can bring items to share with the group. We will have boxes for you to use or you can use your own and wrap it in Christmas paper. Here are some items you can be buying as you find them. Buy several of an item if they are a good price. Everything must fit inside a shoe box, so nothing very large. A WOW item: something to delight a child: stuffed animal, toys, puppets, truck, doll, musical instrument, outfit, shoes. Toys: cars, yo-yos, jump ropes, balls, toys that light up School supplies: pens, pencils, crayons, markers, sharpeners, solar calculators Non liquid hygiene items: toothbrushes, bar soap, combs, washcloths Accessories: shirts, socks, hats, sunglasses, jewelry, flashlights, Candy: hard candy, gummy bears, caramels, taffy and gum A personal note with your photo. Include address and name and they may write back. If you would like to read more about this ministry of Samaritans Purse, check out Samaritainspurse.org. There are some awesome videos of children receiving shoeboxes that always inspire. Don t miss this opportunity to be a blessing and be blessed! ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION WEEKEND Saturday, November 11, at 5:30 Dinner. We will have a 20th Anniversary Worship service on Sunday, November 12, with Rev. Dr. Jeff Hutcheson preaching, and Kirkin' O the Tartans with a bagpiper, followed by a shortbread reception. Details coming soon. NOVEMBER 12, 2017

OCTOBER 2017 8 Memories and Visions Chapter 4, Part 1 That new church is really doing big things! Part One This is labeled Part One of chapter 4, because we are taking sort of a break from the annuls of chronology and taking a quick look at one big thing, that is in the future, but because of the past. At my age I find that those of us in that category, view life through a rear view mirror. We take a look back at the roads which have brought us to the present. The upcoming big thing is the week-end of Saturday, November 11 and Sunday, November 12, 2017. This will be a celebration of this church s 20th anniversary of existence as an official church of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The Celebration will also be for the 10th anniversary of the dedication of the new sanctuary. The Presbyterian Church (USA) is the largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States. Presbyterians trace their history to the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. The Presbyterian Heritage, and much of its theology, began with the Swiss/French theologian and lawyer, John Calvin... (According to The Presbyterian Church (USA) Wikipedia). (Editorial note: This Georgia lawyer, in spite of rumors to the contrary, denies that he practiced law as contemporary of John Calvin). The Presbyterian Church (USA) was formed in 1983 by merger of The Presbyterian Church in the United States (the southern church) and The United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (the northern church). The above reference to ancient history illustrates that FPC Cleveland is young in the scheme of things, but to us 20 years is a long time so we will pause to celebrate on 11/11 & 11/12. Save those dates. Saturday night will be a dinner and program starting at 5:30 with fellowship, stories, good catered food, and entertainment by the always great Thomason family. Sunday will be a full day with worship at 11AM and go until 12:30PM. It will start with Kirkin O the Tartans leading into the sanctuary where the service will be led by Rev. Dr. Jeff Hutcheson, our original called and installed pastor who served the Lord here with us for 10 years. His wife, Sherri, and his mother, Peggy Hutcheson, will join him. Following the worship service a Shortbread reception will be held in Hutcheson Fellowship Hall. Past pastors, past members, Presbytery officials, our builder and others are being invited. If you know of someone who should be invited, leave their name(s) and address at the church office. Let s celebrate!! Jim Hiers Next: Chapter 4, part 2, back to FPCC history LUNCH BUNCH Lunch Bunch is scheduled for October 19th. Dr. Tom Lott has invited us to picnic and tour his 1850s Heritage Farm on Adair Mill Rd. Cleveland. We will meet at the church at 11:30 and take a short ride to the property. A picnic lunch will be served. Cost is $7 per person to cover food costs. Please sign up in Narthex.

OCTOBER 2017 9 OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS October 10 - Jannie dewaart October 11 - Jamie Rades October 11 - Neile Chambers October 13 - Gypsy (Gyp) Smith October 17 - Genie Bogart October 18 - Robert Davis October 20 - Joyce Naivar October 21 - Becky Clark October 29 - Melody Thomason HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU HAPPY BIRTHDAY GOD BLESS YOU HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU Please accept our apologies if we missed your birthday this month. Please notify the church office so we will remember next year. Thank You FINANCIAL CORNER A Season of Dedication So here we are; it s fall and now we arrive at the time when we typically conduct our annual stewardship emphasis. Your Session has designated November 19 as Consecration Sunday. It is the time we focus on discipleship and commitment to not only pledging our financial resources to the ministries that God is calling us to do, but also to consider our participation and involvement in them. The more involved and the greater the passion for the mission, the greater the possibilities of our being faithful as servants of Christ and stewards of God s mysteries (1 Corinthians 4:1). It is a spiritual discipline and a way of living that helps us to manage what God has entrusted to us and the true joy of giving as a response to God s generosity. We are called to be good stewards of all that we have: stewards of time, stewards of gifts, stewards of resources, stewards of relationships, stewards of ministry, stewards of the knowledge of God, stewards of the people in our community of faith, stewards of the mysteries of God. It is the time to pray and consider the answer to the question What is God calling me to give? 2017 Financial August Year to Date Income for Operating Expenses: $13,259.00 $154,971.99 Operating Expenses: $16,482.99 $142,047.36 Net Operating Income for the month: -$3,223.99 $12,924.63 Judy Winski A complete listing of the church s August financial documents is posted on the church office glass wall (by the office door).
