THE HOLY LAND A Journey of Understanding Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding (Pro 3.13) History, beauty conflict The Holy Land is rich in historical treasures, natural beauty, deep spiritual significance and warm-hearted people. As the heartland of our faith it abounds with opportunities for deeper insight into the truths of Scripture and the teachings of Jesus. At the same time it is a land locked in a conflict that has defied resolution for over 60 years and remains a cause of political and religious division that affects us all. So many divisions in our world are fuelled by misunderstanding, both in those directly involved and those who look on. We invite you to join us on a Journey of Understanding to this wonderful land. Most pilgrimages to the Holy Land focus on the holy sites. We seek to go beyond that by visiting the living stones the people of the land. Yes, we explore the places that have meaning to our faith, in, Bethlehem, and the, but the greater purpose of this Journey is to understand the issues and challenges facing both sides of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict in order to better pray for and contribute to the peace of. Open dialogue and Jesus message of love for neighbour, and for enemy, are our guiding principles.

How it all started The Reconciliation Walk began in 1996, the 900th anniversary of the First Crusade. Between then and 1999 groups of Christians walked the route the crusaders took from Cologne, Germany to. But instead of bearing arms they bore an apology from Christians in the West to the peoples of the area for the violence and barbarity the crusaders committed in the name of Christ. That first act of reconciliation began to break through the age-old suspicion and mistrust towards the West in the minds of many Middle Easterners and established a pattern of relational peace-building that continues today. The Journey continues Today the Reconciliation Walk ministry includes relational peace-making in conflict areas, training in forgiveness, reconciliation and justice, crosscultural community outreach, and awareness projects including Journeys of Understanding. (For more go to www.recwalk.net ). Typical Itinerary The following is typical of the content and pattern of a Journey. Specific places, people and the order of events may vary. A detailed itinerary is provided to prospective participants. Each trip is a mix of visiting the captivating, history-laden sites of the Holy Land, experiencing its cultural and spiritual atmosphere and, above all, meeting its Gethsemane wonderful people, especially those who labour against the odds for peace and justice. We spend three days exploring and the Israeli perspective, three in Bethlehem examining the Palestinian viewpoint, then three days in visiting the sites of Jesus ministry and thinking through what we have experienced in light of His teaching. The group will meet with both Israelis and Palestinians: Jews, Christians and Muslims, and with strategic leaders involved in reconciliation works. Our desire is to help dismantle stereotypes and build bridges of understanding that will cross cultural, historical, and religious barriers, both in the region, and at home in our own spheres of influence.
