THE FRIARS, AYLESFORD encouraging openness to God The Carmelites first arrived at Aylesford in 1242 from Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, remaining here until 1538 - the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The Carmelites returned to their ancient home in 1949. Aylesford has been a place of pilgrimage since. The Shrine is dedicated to the Glorious Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Simon Stock. Pilgrims are welcome all year round to join both the daily services of the Carmelite Community and the principal public services. We ask pilgrims to pray for the following intentions: a renewal of the spirit of faith; that everyone may find truth and meaning in their lives; for reconciliation, unity and peace; for the intentions of all the pilgrims that come to Aylesford.
