TIME OF PRAYER Mike Helland Call to Confession Let us confess our sins to the One whose eyes are open day and night to heed our cry and our prayer. Prayer of Confession Watchful God, you know our plight. Offended, we have not believed your words. Complaining, we have betrayed your love. We are weak, estranged, wandering, and lost. Seeking to stand in our own strength, we fall. Strangers to your holiness, we wander. Defenseless against evil within and without, we are lost. Shine your light in our darkness, and guide us back to our place in you. Amen. [Silent Prayer] Declaration of Forgiveness The Living God hears our cry and forgives our sin! The Lord God is a sun and shield, bestowing favor and honor on us through Christ, the bread from heaven who brings us back to God and feeds us with his strength. *SONG OF WORSHIP: PLEASE REMAIN SEATED BEFORE THE THRONE OF GOD ABOVE (VERSE 1) Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea A great High Priest whose name is Love Who ever lives and pleads for me My name is graven on his hands My name is written on his heart I know that while in heav'n he stands

Victor Labenske READING OF THE SCRIPTURES Hebrews 11:8 16 (NIV) Sam Palpant 8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. 9 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11 And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came
descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. 13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. Genesis 12:1 7 (NRSV) Katie Stark 1 Now the Lord said to Abram, Go from your country and your kindred and your father s house to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother s son Lot, and all the possessions that they had gathered, and the persons whom they had acquired in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, 6 Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram, and said, To your offspring I will give this land. So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. BENEDICTION (VERSE 3) When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; death of death, and hell s destruction, land me safe on Canaan s side: Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever give to thee, (give to thee,) I will ever give to thee. Are there people of other nationalities, ethnic groups, or faith traditions in your workplace, neighborhood, community, or congregation? What are some ways in which you and your congregation can express the welcome of God to those who are different from you? Household Prayer: Morning Lord God, my sun and shield, a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. Let the favor of your presence strengthen me and accompany me everywhere I go today.
Prepare me to be a sanctuary, that your light and love may radiate through me. Through Christ my Lord. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening Lord God my strength, your Spirit never tires; your love never fails. I bring you my struggles, stresses, questions, and worries of this day. Where else can I go? You have the words of eternal life. Let your promises sustain my soul and comfort my heart as I rest in you, through Christ my Lord. Amen.
