ALL ARE SENT Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of all God s promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Treasures from our Tradition Domingo de Pentecostés PAGE 5 Tradiciones de nuestra Fe The disciples gathered on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection were not keeping their first Pentecost. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an eye in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. Churches and homes are decked in greenery and flowers to express the new life the Holy Spirit brings on this, the birthday of the church. Este sueño de utopía, se quedó en sueño pero, es un sueño que continua en el pueblo latino y su devoción al Espíritu Santo de la Santísima Trinidad. PAGE 6 Pentecost Sunday May 20, 2018 MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION BANNER OF REMEMBERANCE Memorial Day originally began in our country as an occasion to remember and decorate the graves of the soldiers who died in the Civil War. Later it became a holiday to commemorate all those who died in war in service to our country. This year on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 th, at the 9:00 a.m. Mass we will honor and remember those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We will also celebrate the dedication and bravery of the men and women who are PRESENTLY serving in the Armed Forces. For those who made the ultimate sacrifice we are blessed and grateful. For those who continue to serve we honor their commitment and service. You are welcome to bring a framed picture of your loved one(s) who died in service to their country or who are currently serving in the military. These pictures will be placed at the foot of the altar during this special mass. If you would like to add your loved one s name to our Banner of Remembrance, you will find a form at the Mary s Altar to fill out and place in the basket provided, no later than Sunday, May 20 th. After Mass you are invited to stay for some refreshments and fellowship. MONTH OF MARY The month of May is the month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady, and it is the occasion for a moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world pray to the Queen of Heaven. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God s mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance (Paul VI: Encyclical on the Month of May, no. 1). In our observance of the Marian month we encourage you to do some of the following to celebrate the month of May: Bring fresh flowers to adorn our statue of Mary, Light a candle at Mary s Altar, Pray a Novena to Our Lady, Look up and learn about a new Marian Devotion, Memorize a Marian Prayer, Pray the Rosary, Get and wear a Miraculous Medal (Our Lady promised St. Catherine of Laboure great graces to those who wear this medal), Read a book about Mary Pope Paul VI goes on to say that May is an opportune time to let our petitions fly to Our Lady especially for the needs of the Church and the whole human race that most urgently require our Blessed Mother s intercession. PAGE 8 Pentecost Sunday May 20, 2018 Religious Education News RELIGIOUS ED Please check for updates on our website www.stlinus-church.org Camille Jack Pentecost Sunday Caution: Spirit at Work If Pentecost celebrates the gifts of the Spirit, it can tempt us to separate the Spirit from the Father and Jesus. Sometimes we think of the Father as the God of the Old Testament, Jesus as center of New Testament, and the Spirit as God of the present age, almost as if the Father and Jesus were enjoying their retirement. Actually, all three persons share one Godlife. Instead of three gods debating the fate of the universe, we have one God who is over all and in all. The Spirit has been active in all ages. The prophets were empowered by the Spirit to proclaim God s word to Israel. Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit led Jesus into the desert at the beginning of his ministry. (Search the word spirit in the four gospels and it appears 75 times.) Jesus was filled with the Spirit as he preached and worked miracles. Then at Pentecost the disciples were filled with the Spirit. So what about Pentecost? It is really about using our gifts and sharing the good news. The Spirit gives us the power, courage, and energy to do this. The Spirit s gifts are meant to be shared. The prophets could not help proclaim God s message. Jesus shared all he knew with his disciples. The disciples went out to the world to spread the news of Jesus death and resurrection. So we, too, are given gifts to be shared. The greatest gift we have been given is the news of our salvation. This feast reminds us to share that with others. We may do that by example, as when we worship together, forgive others, give to the poor or help someone in need. We can also share that news by teaching our children about God and his love for them, teaching them to pray, or sharing our faith with other adults. As we come to realize how much God has done for us and how close he is to us, we will want to share that with others. Obviously, we can t make everyone believe in Jesus. But how sad would it be if someone we know was looking for the truth and we neglected to offer it?

PAGE 10 Pentecost Sunday May 20, 2018 PENTECOST SUNDAY The feast of Pentecost invites us to reflect prayerfully upon the Holy Spirit. Our readings today reveal three distinct views of the Holy Spirit. In Acts, the Spirit moves powerfully and unpredictably, sometimes in disorienting ways, to renew the world. In Paul, the Spirit unites the church in Jesus into one body, and provides many varied and complementary gifts to the church. In John, the Spirit continues the healing and forgiving presence of Jesus, and empowers his followers to extend the ministry of Jesus to the whole world. Pentecost teaches us that the Holy Spirit speaks and acts in many ways: to comfort us, to shake us up, and to open us to something new. Always, the Spirit is communicating God s love. Just like those who first heard God s proclamation in many languages, we might hear the Spirit who penetrates our hearts, speaking the many languages of love ENCOUNTERING CULTURE We listen today, in Acts, of how very diverse individuals, all Jewish, heard the proclamation of Jesus in their own languages. These were likely diaspora Jews who had lived in other lands and had learned different languages and cultures. Throughout the book, the author of Acts is hinting at what will happen later. The Good News will be received by different peoples and cultures. There will be dialogue between Jesus message and each culture, and the message will take root within the culture. Many persons will reject Jesus, but those who accept him will learn to proclaim Jesus, and join in the Spirit s work of transforming the culture. We too are invited to join God s mission in our own culture, approaching with both humility and boldness. We are to be servants, companions, and sometimes prophets, always with charity and openness. The Spirit calls us both to engage in dialogue with others and to proclaim Jesus with our lives. GIFTS TO BE SHARED Through Paul s ministry in Corinth, the Christian community there had sprung up quickly. A variety of spiritual gifts were enthusiastically shared. But that variety led to arguments among them. Some believed that some gifts, such as speaking in tongues, were more important. Those with certain gifts gained honor and status in the community. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul challenged this. He wrote that all are gifted, and all gifts come from the Holy Spirit. The gifts, though quite varied, are fundamentally equal in importance. They have one shared purpose, to proclaim and live the good news of Jesus. Each of us is invited to consider how the Spirit has given us gifts within the Church to participate in God s mission in the world. Our gifts are valuable and distinctly ours. But they are no better or worse than the gifts of others. All are given to serve our common purpose. With both humility and boldness, let us share our gifts. Safeguard the Children DID YOU KNOW?
