Come have some Cake and Ice Cream!!! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This is the height of vacation season, but as anyone who has ever been to Rome in the summer knows, no time to visit there! The city is sweltering, and in a pre-airconditioned world long ago, Romans figured out that they needed a break in the surrounding hills. Even the pope clears out. His destination is usually Castelgandolfo, a lovely little hill town southeast of Rome, overlooking a tranquil lake. It has been a papal possession since about 1600, and in 1929, when most of the papal states were finally lost, the papal dwelling was given extraterritorial rights, meaning that it is an extension of Vatican City and not under Italian rule. The Vatican observatory maintained telescopes here for decades, far from the glare of the city lights of Rome, but although the observatory offices remain here year round, the telescopes are in Arizona. Pope Francis spends less time here than his predecessors, though he still slows down the pace of his work in Rome. Vacations can help us visit friends and relatives, and revive those human contacts that the pace of our lives keeps us from cultivating. The pope needs a break, and so do you. Vacation comes from a word meaning to empty oneself. Do you know...our belief in Holy Communion is very different from any other Church? The Church teaches that the Eucharist (Holy Communion) is the source and summit of the Christian life. (CC1324) As Catholics we truly believe that the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist is very Real. Jesus said, this IS my Body; this IS my Blood and Jesus is not a liar, not a sign or symbol. Jesus Christ, who is the God of the Universe, is present here in the Eucharist and in the Eucharistic Presence, He fulfills His last promise: I am with you always, until the end of the age (Mt28:20). He makes the greatest promise He could ever make when He tells us, Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. The Catholic Church teaches that in order for someone to be of the Catholic faith, the people are to accept its teaching about the Eucharist in order to receive Holy Communion, not out of a desire to exclude anyone, but in recognition that the Eucharist is, as St. Augustine wrote, a sign of unity and bond of charity, and that partaking presupposes a commonly held belief (Ephesians 4:3-6), which sadly is not yet the case among all Christians. Even though non-catholic Christians have Communion services, the belief differs from what Catholics believe. Catholics believe that Holy Communion is the Real Presence of Jesus Christ, not a sign, not a symbol, not an expression of our fellowship or communion with each other. That is why Catholics are not to receive Communion in any other faith denomination. Also, if someone from another faith denomination is visiting our Church with you for Mass, they are not to receive Holy Communion. However, they could come up in the Communion procession to receive a blessing indicating so by crossing their hands across their chest. It is the responsibility of the Catholic to inform those visiting who are non-catholic while at a Mass. Again, this is not for exclusion but more so for expressing and respecting true, sacred belief. Keith 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time Choose God, Choose Life In recent weeks we have heard Jesus talking about the importance of faith, which brings us into closest union with Him. Last week, He spoke plainly about the Eucharist, ending with the words: anyone who eats this bread will live forever. The response; How could anyone accept it? Jesus agrees: it isn't easy to accept such a claim; in fact, without the help of the Holy Spirit, it would be impossible. But he doesn't go back on what he s said, not even when many of his disciples left him. He takes nothing back or changes what he said. Instead, he turns to the Twelve Apostles and asks, What about you, do want to go away too? He knows he could lose his closest friends over his teaching about the Eucharist. But Peter says, Lord, who shall we go to? You have the words of eternal life, and we believe. They trust him: they Choose God; they choose Life. This Gospel message becomes a reality at Mass for each of us. When we come to Holy Communion and we hear and see, The Body of Christ ; what is our response? We say Amen, but this tiny word, easy to mumble without a second thought, but do we really know what we mean? A Hebrew word that is our YES our act of faith that we truly believe this IS Jesus Christ and we will not walk away from this challenging belief. Our Amen is like Peter s declaration: Lord who shall we go to? You have the words of eternal life. It s our total commitment to Jesus we choose God; we Choose Life that fullness of life that God alone can give. Make-up Altar Server Training Sat., Sept 8th from 10-12 in the Church with Fr. Keith. When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his livestock and other possessions would be consecrated to service of God. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live, and wouldn t think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the households of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we encounter many strangers every day in stores or traffic who suddenly are next door to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain?
