Lighthouse of Iowa Keeping in touch with Iowa s Churches of Christ Drew Teghtmeyer drew.teghtmeyer@gmail.com If you were to ask my wife, What is it that Drew thinks he wants? you may get a myriad of answers. I am a man of many different interests, hobbies, likes, and dislikes. She might tell you how close I came recently to being the proud owner of a 1982 M35A2 Army Deuce and a Half truck with 6 wheel drive, turbo-diesel power, and weighing about 13,000 pounds of American iron to lumber down the road in. She could also tell you of my affinity for Jeeps, guns, trucks, or race cars. Unfortunately for me though, she would probably tell you of all these things before she told you of my wants, rather, my needs in my service to Christ. I am going to assume that most readers know something about my upbringing, whether I had shared it with you, or by deduction at the sight of my last name. I am a man that is comfortable in front of people; my father is, and my grandfather was long before him. My service to the Body is an enjoyment to me. So, what lack I yet? I m reminded of the passage in 1 Timothy 4:12-16 where the younger man Timothy is instructed to be an example to the body, and what does Paul tell Timothy to do until his return? To read, exhort, meditate on the love of Christ, be given entirely to the spirit, compare yourself to the doctrine, and never stop. I am to be an example to the believers around me. What lack I yet? I lack wisdom, I lack experience, but thanks to the older brothers and sisters before me, I'm enveloped by their example, their encouragement, their spirit, and most importantly, their love for Christ. Zach Wheeler Zachary.Wheeler@hotmail.com The rich young man asked Christ what good deed he needed to do in order to obtain everlasting life. Christ told him to follow the commandments. The young man pressed Christ and asked which commandments he needed to follow. Christ gave him the answer, and the What Lack I Yet? Three brothers address this question. September 2017 young man stated that he had kept all of those commandments and pressed a second time, asking what he still lacked. The young man knew he was missing something for salvation. He knew that there was something more that he could do. When Christ told him to sell everything and follow Him, he went away sorrowful because he was wealthy. Christ doesn t want all of us to sell all our possessions, or He we would have commanded us to do so. I believe that Christ s answer came from knowing the rich young man s heart, and knowing what would get in the way of his salvation. What do we have in our lives that might get in our way? Is it our possessions? Our careers? Our friends, or our hobbies? What would Christ tell us to remove from our lives if we asked him the same question? Are we willing to ask what it is we lack for salvation, or are we afraid to ask because we already know the answer? If we know that there is something that we are lacking for our salvation, then we are not putting Christ first in our life. If we are not putting Christ first in our life then there is something else in His place. What would Christ ask you to give up for Him, and are you willing to do it? Bill Hounsom cplhounusmc@yahoo.com Quite the subject, right? It would impose on the very surface, at the least, a lot of self-evaluation. First off, what do I have, or possess, in my Christian walk that would make me believe that either I'm missing something or something needs added to in order to make me complete? I have my salvation as is biblically required, Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3: 21; Mark 16:16. Isn't that enough? NO! The apostle Peter states this clearly in 2 Peter 1:2-11. He uses the phrase "If You" twice as he tells us what we must additionally do to stay saved. In verse 5 in reads, "Make every effort to add to your faith goodness and to goodness, knowledge, and to knowledge, self-control, and to self-control, perseverance, and to perseverance,

godliness, and to godliness, brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness, love. What hits me harder here is self-control and perseverance. I know these are the areas that I need to add to because of my introspections. We probably all have things about our personalities that keep us from being all of what God wants. We, as His disciples, need to be vigilant of our own short comings so that we can correct ourselves and be productive for our Lord. If not, Peter says in 2 Peter 1:10,11, "Therefore brothers be eager to make His calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. At this point in my walk, I need more self-control so that I will persevere and become more godly. James 1:2-4 "Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete not lacking anything. Then James 1:21 "Humbly accept the Word planted in you, which can save you. Being saved takes hearing, belief, repentance and baptism. But it takes even more afterwards discipline, self-control, perseverance, work and production. If you and can are big words. What do you lack in your walk? Gossip Town Have you ever heard of Gossip Town on the Shore of False-Head Bay? Where old Dame Rumor, with rustling gown, is roaming the lifelong day? It isn't far to Gossip Town for people who want to go, The idleness train will take you down in just an hour or so. The Thoughtless Road is a popular route, and most folks start that way: But it's steep downgrade; if you don't look out, you'll land in Falsehood Bay. You glide through the valley of Vicious Folk and into the tunnel of Hate; Then, crossing the Add- To-Bridge, you walk right into the city gate. The principal street is called "They Say," and "I've Heard" is the public well, And the breezes that blow from False-Head Bay are laden with "Don't you tell." In the midst of the town is Telltale Park; you're never quite safe while there. For its owner is Madam Suspicious Remark, who lives on the street Don't Care. Just back of the park is Slander's Row; 'twas there Good Name died. Pierced by an arrow from Jealousy's bow in the hands of Envious Pride. From Gossip Town peace long since fled, now trouble, grief, and woe. And sorrow, and care you'll meet instead if ever you chance to go.
