OVERNIGHT: HOTEL, ROME WEDNESDAY, OCT 17 THE VATICAN This morning after breakfast you will have the honor of attending the Papal Audience. Afterwards, lunch on your own, then a special guided visit to the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. Again, you do not stand in line, but are taken right in. The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure to explore Rome on your own. (pending upon confirmation) Visit Independence Hall, site of the signing of Israel s Declaration of Independence, establishing Jewish sovereignty for the first time in 2,000 years. Visit the Nachalat Binyamin Arts and Crafts Fair as Tel Avivians prepare for the Sabbath and weekend, with lunch on your own. Free time for rest, relaxation and Sabbath preparation. Welcome in the Sabbath with Kabbalat Shabbat either as a group on the beach or at one of Tel Aviv s synagogues. Festive Sabbath Dinner in a private room of your hotel. Drive to Rehovot to visit the Ayalon Institute, a pre-state clandestine munitions factory for a look at some of the ingenuity that helped build the modern State of Israel. Through Beit Daniel, the progressive congregation in Tel Aviv, visit Old Jaffa for a Co- Existence Tour. This experience brings together a Jewish and an Arab tour guide to explore the mixed city of Jaffa, where Arabs and Jews live side by side; tracing the different historical narratives. We explore the possibility of creating a common future and shared society. Guided visit through Old Jaffa, the ancient city where Jonah began his journey and today a thriving artist s colony and port. Continue to Haifa to the Stella Maris Monastery and a theological dialogue with Monks about Jewish - Catholic relations in Israel. View the Bahai Gardens overlooking Haifa Bay. Late afternoon visit to Safed, the city of mystics and hidden spirituality, walking through the alleyways and ancient synagogues. Drive across the Galilee to the Nof Ginnosar Kibbutz Hotel. Ascend to Mt. Bental for a view into Syria and an understanding of the delicate geopolitical situation on the Israeli-Syrian border.
Drive up the Golan Heights to the Druze Village of Bukata, for Home Hospitality with the Samara Family, and a dialogue about the Druze tradition, Syria, and their complex relationship with Israel. Walk through Capernaum, where Jesus taught during the days of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, including the ancient synagogue and church, with time for personal worship. Continue to Tabgha, the traditional site of the multiplication of loaves and fish and conclude the visit around the Sea of Galilee with an overlook on to the Sea from atop the Mount of Beatitudes, where the Sermon on the Mount took place. Return to the hotel with Dinner in the hotel s dining room. Continue to Beit Shean, known as Scytopolis, the capitol of the Byzantine Decapolis, with its Biblical and Roman- Byzantine archaeological remains. Drive through the Jordan Valley and stop at Qasr el Yahud, seen by Jews as the possible site where Joshua crossed the Jordan River, and by Christians as the site of Jesus baptism - walk up to the Jordan River along the Jordanian Border. Ascend to Jerusalem via the Eastern Gate and stop at Mount Scopus for an introduction to Jerusalem and an Ecumenical Arrival Ceremony with bread and wine, the tradition of Kings in Jerusalem. Continue to the Jewish Quarter and walk through the Upper City of 2000 years ago, concluding at the Kotel (Western Wall), with time for personal reflection. Guided visit through the City of David, with Bible in hand, exploring the origins of Jerusalem, and walk thorugh the new tunnel which connects the City of David with the Davidson Archeaeological Park along the Southern Wall excavations. Lunch on your own en route. Drive South to Bethlehem for a visit to the Church of the Nativity, with a short Geo- Political tour en route. Return to Jerusalem - Dinner on your own. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25 MEMORIES FOR THE FUTURE Visit Yad Vashem, Israel s National Memorial to the six million victims of the Holocaust, including the Historical Museum, the Avenue of the Righteous and the Children s Museum with a local guide. Visit the Sisters of Zion Convent in Ein Kerem for a dialogue with Sister Anna Maria on the unique role played by the order in Jewish-Christian relations and their post Holocaust change in theology regarding Judaism. On to Masada, ascend by cable car up to the ancient Herodian fortress later used as a place of last refuge when free Jews held out against the Romans after the Temple was destroyed in 70 CE. Walk through the site and contemplate the meaning of the Masada story in contemporary life. Visit the Dead Sea - lunch and the opportunity to float in the famous water of the world s saltiest sea.
