LORD, INCREASE OUR FAITH! Introduction: A. Text: Lk. 17:5 And the apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith. B. The Apostles Desire Should Certainly Be Our Desire Too! C. How Is Your Faith? I. (Slide #2) The Context Of The Apostle s Plea. A. Lk. 17:5-10 And the apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith. 6 So the Lord said, If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea, and it would obey you. 7 And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, Come at once and sit down to eat? (Slide #3) 8 But will he not rather say to him, Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink? 9 Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. 10 So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do. B. (Slide #4) Jesus Has Just Addressed Forgiveness. Lk. 7:1-4 1. Those who cause people to sin face God s Woe! 1 2. If one sins against you and repents, forgive him! 3 3. Forgive a person even if he sins against you seven times! 4 C. ( ) The Disciples Response, Increase Our Faith! Lk. 17:5 1

D. ( ) Jesus Reply May Be Confusing To Us: If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea, and it would obey you. Lk. 17:6 1. (Slide #5) Mustard seed -- Jesus earlier described it as the smallest of seeds. Mt. 13:31 2. In His parable about the Mustard Seed Jesus discussed the Kingdom of God -- It would start small; It would flourish and grow; It would become powerful, influential, and world-wide! a. Mt. 13:31,32 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, 32 which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches. b. Mk. 4:30-32 Then He said, To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it? 31 It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth; 32 but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade. c. Lk. 13:18,19 Then He said, What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and put in his garden; and it grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches. 3. (Slide #6) This is not the mustard greens that one eats. (Slide #7) This is a small seed that grows into a large tree. 4. (Slide #8) This is a plant that comes from a small seed; it flourishes and grows! 5. (Slide #9) Jesus Message -- But what does Jesus mean when He says to the Apostles If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea, and it would obey you.? a. ( ) His Apostles are going to be given AMAZING supernatural powers. b. As their faith grows, they will be given power by the Holy Spirit to perform unexpected miraculous events! c. And they did! 1. They spoke in foreign languages they had never studied. Ac. 2:4-12 2. They could heal the sick -- Peter and John healed the lame man. Ac. 3:1-11 3. The Holy Spirit enabled them to reveal the lies of Ananias and Sapphira and struck them dead. Ac. 5:1-11 4. The Apostles could lay hands on Christians and give miraculous gifts to them. Ac. 8:14-17 2

5. Peter healed the lame man Aeneas. Ac. 9:32-35 6. Peter raised Dorcas from the dead. Ac. 9:36-42 6. ( ) These men cultivated a faith that would stand up to powerful men who opposed Jesus! a. Ac. 4:20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. b. Ac. 5:29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: "We ought to obey God rather than men. c. No wonder the men of the Sanhedrin made this observation! Ac. 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. 7. ( ) They are going to grow a faith that is fearless and a hope that is rock solid! II. (Slide #10) Application For Christians Today. A. Christ Gives Some Difficult Commands! 1. Love your enemies! Mt. 5:44 2. Forgive! a. Forgive, even to seventy times seven! Mt. 18:21,22 b. Mt. 6:15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 3. Do not worry! a. Mt. 6:31 Therefore do not worry, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? b. Trust The Lord! Mt. 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 4. True greatness is found in being a servant! a. Mt. 20:26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. b. Many like to think of themselves first -- what I want; what I need; what I wish others would do for me. c. Jesus says, Be a servant! B. ( ) In Its Weakness, Faith May Struggle With Obeying God s Commands; As It Increases, You Become More And More Obedient! 3

C. (Slide #11) Faith May Start Small; It Can Become Strong And Do Great, Even Unexpected Things! 1. It can help us to take those difficult commands and begin to live them! 2. It can change our attitude! 3. It can make you have amazingly strong faith! 4. You can become a mighty servant of the Lord! 5. You may surprise yourself at what you are able to do for the Lord, for His Cause, and for His People! D. ( ) Your Faith Can Become Greater And More Powerful Than You Can Imagine! 1. NO, we will NOT perform miracles as the Apostles and First Century Christians did or pass on those gifts as the Apostles did! a. Simon the Sorcerer who became a Christian wanted to buy the power to pass on supernatural gifts. b. Peter told him this was not in God s plan! But Peter said to him, Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21 You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. Ac. 8:21 2. Even though we do not have miraculous gifts, our faith can take us to heights we never imagined; it can lead us to do the unexpected for Him; it can grow to be huge and powerful! E. ( ) You Do Not Know What God Can Do With You! 1. The words of the hymn: It is no secret what God can do! can be SO true! 2. Look at the power of strong faith! a. Jesus took fishermen and made them great Fishers Of Men! b. He took a thief and hated tax collector and made him a trusted and righteous Apostle. c. He took fearful Apostles and made them staunch soldiers of the Cross. d. He took a terrorist against Christ and Christianity, Saul of Tarsus, and made him the dynamic and influential Paul. e. John Mark s faith increased; he no longer was a man of weak faith; he became strong and Paul commended that growth and saw John Mark as useful for him. II Tim. 4:11 4

F. Without That Plea For Increased Faith, We May Just Wallow In Spiritual Mediocrity Or Even Slide Backward Into Lesser And Weaker Faith! III. (Slide #13) The Dangerous Results Of NOT Increasing Our Faith. A. ( ) Spiritual Weakness. B. ( ) Spiritual Regression. C. ( ) Spiritual Alienation. D. ( ) Spiritual Suicide (Death!) E. ( ) We Will Never Become What We Could Be For The Lord! IV. (Slide #14) How Can We Increase Our Faith? A. ( ) Cultivate More And More Faith In Jesus! 1. Read the Gospels! 2. Marvel at who Jesus is -- A Divine Being! 3. Hear His teachings; see His miracles; be in AWE of Him! 4. Grow in love for Him! 5. Have the sentiment of the song: Lord, make me a servant; make me like You! B. ( ) You Have To LONG For Greater Faith! 1. The Apostles realized that their faith was weak. 2. But they LONGED for it to grow. 3. And look at their lives -- see how it grew and grew! 5

C. ( ) Spend Much Time With Jesus! 1. Ac. 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. 2. Let His life and teaching have an enormous impact upon you! D. ( ) Pray Fervently! 1. Pray for God s providential opportunities for growth. 2. Pray for people to come into your life who will influence you and encourage you to cultivate greater faith! E. ( ) Do Not Run From Difficult And Fearful Circumstances; Face Them And Grow Your Faith! 1. Js. 1:2,3 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 2. David facing the lion grew greater faith to face Goliath! Conclusion: A. The Apostles Likely Would Never Have Become What They Became Without The Plea, Lord, Increase Our Faith! B. (Slide #15) Stretch Your Faith! C. May You And I Have This Same Sentiment In Our Hearts! D. Christians, LONG For Greater Faith! E. For Those Who Are Not Christians -- Cultivate A Faith That Will Humble Yourself And Lead You To Obey Christ So You Can Have The PRECIOUS Salvation That He Can Provide! 6
