The New Covenant: Lesson 4 Jeremiah 31:31-34 31 "Behold, (listen carefully) days are coming," (Millennium) declares the LORD (YHWH), "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 1 Made by YHWH 2 It will be a New Covenant 3 Enacted in the future after Tribulation in Millennium 4 Made with all Israel (both Northern and Southern Kingdoms) 32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, (Mosaic Covenant) My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD. 33 "But (in contrast with this old covenant Mosaic) this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," Sunday Early Morning Message Page 1

(those days promised to Israel (490 years of which 483 have been fulfilled and the 7 years of the Tribulation will complete those years) declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; (not outside of them as the Mosaic-Law was, but inside them) and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 1 It is a totally New Covenant in not only content but in results as well. 2 It will be a New Covenant in that God will be enacted in a yet future date from Jeremiah. 3 It will be a New Covenant in that God is going to supernaturally put His Law in their hearts. As we have already seen this is a New Covenant not only in content but in historical results, of God putting His law on their hearts as is clearly seen again here in verse 34. 34 "They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they will all know Me, (everyone will be saved) from the least of them to the greatest of them," declares the LORD, "for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." (1). As a result of the New Covenant is to be the universal knowledge of the Lord and all His Word. Sunday Early Morning Message Page 2

(2). Under the Mosaic Law, they were to teach others and their own children. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 4 "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! This will become an historical reality when the New Covenant is enacted. 5 "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. This will not become a national reality until the New Covenant is enacted in Millennium. 6 "These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. I hope you see from this how rich the New Covenant will be, when everyone of them will have these words written on their hearts by God supernaturally. 7 "You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. Always on your mind! Note that word diligently.. teach diligently. This Hebrew word changes its nuance depending on the stem used as example in the simple Qal stem it means sharpen but here in the Intensive Piel it means to teach incisively, which describes how I am to teach Sunday Early Morning Message Page 3

you. It means to teach intelligently, analytically and in a clear-thinking manner, in a perceptive manner. 8 "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. 9 "You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. The idea being that if you write them on your gate everyone knows that you know them and that you ought always to live by them. So, under the Mosaic Covenant they were to take great caution to teach the Word of God to their own family as well as to others. But under the New Covenant they will not have to teach any Jew any of these truths, because every Jew will know them. Some people teach that by this new Covenant there will be no need of teachers. However, this is not the case for Gentiles will need to be taught. (3) And what about Jewish children born to Jews who are believers? These newly born children are to be taught. Isaiah 54:13-14 13 "All your sons will be taught of the LORD; And the wellbeing of your sons will be great. Sunday Early Morning Message Page 4

14 "In righteousness you will be established; You will be far from oppression, for you will not fear; And from terror, for it will not come near you. Even in the dispensation of the New Covenant, not everyone will be under the New Covenant. The New Covenant is just for the house of Israel and Judah, not for Gentiles. Two things you have to keep in mind: First: The New Covenant is for the Jewish people only in the dispensation of the Millennium. Second: There will be Gentiles living in the Millennium who will not be under this covenant. Jeremiah 31:31-34 makes it very clear that the New Covenant is just for the house of Israel and the House of Judah. It is nowhere even implied that Gentiles will be so affected by this New Covenant. Example: Let s say in the Old Testament that Israel had kept the Old Covenant, kept the Mosiac-Law and not broken the marriage vows; This would have shown the rest of the world, that they were God s people and God was their only God. There obedience to the Old Covenant would not have placed other nations under that covet. So, the fact that Israel will have no need of teachers does not mean Sunday Early Morning Message Page 5

there will be no teachers in the Millennium nor does it mean that Jews will not be the teachers of Gentiles. We know from Isaiah 2: that JESUS CHRIST will teach new truth Isaiah 2:2-3 2 Now it will come about that in the last days (Milennium) the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains, Zion as the home of Jerusalem and will be raised above the hills; And all the nations will stream to it. (Gentiles) 3 And many peoples will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, Jerusalem to the house of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us concerning His ways and that we may walk in His paths." For the law will go forth from Zion and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4 And He will judge between the nations, (Gentiles) and will render decisions for many peoples; (Gentiles) and they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they learn war. Only when JESUS CHRIST rules. Sunday Early Morning Message Page 6

Jeremiah 31:34 34 "They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they will all know Me, everyone will be saved from the least of them to the greatest of them," declares the LORD, "for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." (4) The most remarkable point of this New Covenant is that All Israel will be saved, not one will not be saved. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more. Romans 11:26 26 and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB." Joel 2:28 28 "It will come about after this after the time of the Gentiles and after the seven years of tribulation that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; and your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. As we go over verses like these you must bear in mind that all unbelievers have been removed from the earth. The Baptism of Fire for all unbelieving Gentiles and the Baptism of Fire for all the unbelieving Jews. Sunday Early Morning Message Page 7

The Baptism of Fire here refers to their removal from earth. The Millennium will start out with born again believers only Jews and Gentiles. Revelation 20:11-15 11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, (the glorified Jesus Christ) from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, (resurrection of all dead unbelievers) and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. They are at the Great White Throne Judgment because they refused to believe in JESUS CHRIST, but God will judge them according to their deeds as compared with the Law and with JESUS CHRIST. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Sunday Early Morning Message Page 8

14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. For all eternity. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (and this by the all loving God!!!) Then again do not forget the all-important study of Matthew 24-25 which deals with the Return of Christ at the end of the Tribulation and setting up His kingdom. Matthew 25:31-33 31 "But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, (glorified Jesus Christ) and all the angels with Him, (elect angels) then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 33 "All the nations (including Gentile nations) will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; (believers from unbelievers.) and He will put the sheep on His right, (believers) and the goats on the left. (Unbelievers) Joel 3:1-3 1 Joel 3:1 "For behold, in those days and at that time, (end of the Tribulation) When I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, Sunday Early Morning Message Page 9

2 3 I will gather all the nations (all the Gentile nations of the world) And bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat. Then I will enter into judgment with them there on behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations; And they have divided up My land. (remember this next time you hear about all that the United Nations is doing and wants to do. "They have also cast lots for My people, traded a boy for a harlot and sold a girl for wine that they may drink. (They horrible treat Israel to satisfy their corrupt fleshly desires.) People, we just cannot even imagine how it is going to be that first day of the Millennium. Only believers and all Jews under the New Covenant. (5) What is meant by "for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."? (To understand this theologically you must relate it to Jeremiah 17:1) 1 The sin of Judah is written down with an iron stylus; With a diamond point it is engraved upon the tablet of their heart and on the horns of their altars, (this must be removed before He can put His Law upon their Sunday Early Morning Message Page 10

hearts. While you and I are forgiven of our sins we can and often do Remember them. (and if we don t remember them, others will) (6) There will be unbroken fellowship between God and the Jews verse 34. (7) The New Covenant will be universal in scope in that ALL of Israel will KNOW, will have an intimate relationship with God. It will not need to be mediated by scribes, etc., because all of Israel will comprehend understand it. Jeremiah 31:34. (8) And as is always the case the basis of the New Covenant is forgiveness of sins that refers to the work of JESUS CHRIST on the cross the reason for sending His Messiah. (9) Not only is the New Covenant based on the person and work of JESUS CHRIST on the cross and subsequent Resurrection, it is dependent on the Faithfulness of God (just as our own salvation is dependent on the Faithfulness of God). Jeremiah 31:35 35 Thus says the LORD, Who gives the sun for light by day And the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, Who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar; The LORD of hosts is His name: (these depend on the faithfulness of God as does the New Covenant) Sunday Early Morning Message Page 11

Jeremiah 32:37-40 37 Jeremiah 32:37 "Behold, I will gather them out of all the lands to which I have driven them in My anger, in My wrath and in great indignation; (5 th cycle of divine discipline taken out of their own land and scattered throughout the world; this started in 70 AD) and I will bring them back to this place and make them dwell in safety. We know from Matthew 24-25 that He will sound the trumpet and call all Jews back to the Promised Land and His angels will also actually carry some of them back to Israel. So, don t get to out of spiritual stability by all that is going on in the world today with the Muslims gaining more and more land. JESUS CHRIST has not yet returned and has not yet called them home. 38 38 "They shall be My people, and I will be their God; (New Covenant) 39 and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me (maximum respect and awe of God) always, for their own good and for the good of their children after them. 40 "I will make an everlasting covenant with them (this is the enactment of the New Covenant) that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put the fear of Me (maximum respect and awe in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me. Sunday Early Morning Message Page 12

The New Covenant from Ezekiel 36. Ezekiel means God strengthens or whom God makes strong or simply God is Strong. I attended Dallas Theological Seminary at the same time as Bruce Wilkenson author or Talk thru The Bible. I cannot improve on what he has to say about Ezekiel. Ezekiel prophesies among the Jewish exiles in Babylon during the last days of Judah s decline and downfall, His ministry is in some ways similar to that of his older contemporary, Jeremiah. But while Jeremiah delivers a chilling message of destruction in Jerusalem, Ezekiel brings a warming message of reconstruction in Babylon. Jeremiah is a man of tears; Ezekiel is a man of visions. And those visions stretch from horror to hope; from condemnation upon Judah s faithless leaders and godless foes, to consolation regarding Judah s future. Through it all, mankind would see the glory of Israel s sovereign God and they shall know that I am the Lord. (5:10) Sunday Early Morning Message Page 13
