August 24, 2016 The mission of First United Methodist Church of Silsbee is to glorify God, make disciples, and transform lives in Christ Dear Friends, If there is one constant in life, that constant is change. Now, I know we fight change with all of our resources, but one only has to look in a mirror and the effect is undeniable change happens. As I write this article, I am noticing the changes going on in the church and our world. In the church, Rev. Nancy Ratchford is moving to Waco, TX on August 26. Ben Schulz will preach his first sermon as our Director of Youth Ministries on August 28th. We have had some new members and some members who have moved to other churches. By the way, please pray for me as I send letters to almost 300 local individuals seeking to find out how they are doing spiritually and to invite them back into active membership of First UMC. It saddens me that just about 50% of our local membership is inactive and disconnected from our church. In our world, the Presidential election campaign, constantly changing moral structure, and senseless acts of violence all seem to keep us at a high state of stress and depression. From where can we find relief, joy, peace, assurance, or comfort? Well, as your pastor, I again suggest our God. When all around us is seemingly lost, with God we have security and hope. The following hymn was written by Thomas O. Chisholm in 1923. I hope you enjoy it! Great is Thy Faithfulness Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be. Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above, Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! In Christ, Pastor David

Try the September/October Upper Room The Upper Room devotional for September/October will be available at both worship services on August 28th. These daily devotionals are a great resource for one s spiritual daily needs. If you know of someone who needs one, you are encouraged to take one to them. After August 28th, the Upper Room devotionals will be located in the church office. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As many of you know, I will be moving to Waco, TX at the end of August to be nearer my children and grandchildren. It is not easy to leave my dear friends in Silsbee, and it is so difficult to leave Silsbee First United Methodist Church. In the words of Paul in Philippians 1:3, I thank God upon every remembrance of you. Please pray for me, as I will pray for you. My new address is: 300 W. State Hwy 6 Apt #1111 Waco, TX 76712 I would love to hear from you. For the time being, my phone number is 409-673-8731. In Christian love, Nancy Ratchford Offering for Louisiana Flooding Victims on September 4th Many of us have watched with sad hearts to see the destruction from 30 inches of rain in many parts of Louisiana. The last count is at 50,000 homes that have been flooded. As United Methodist Christians, we are compelled by grace to reach out and help. On September 4 at both worship services, a special offering will be taken to assist the flood victims. All monies collected will be sent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). If you would like to send a donation to them personally, please call our church office and we will provide an address. Thank you in advance for your generosity and compassion.

I hope everyone had a great last few weeks of summer. School has officially begun, meaning time for school work, football games, band events, and so on, but let s not forget what is going on in our Youth IM- PACT group. We have been getting consistent attendance at both Sunday night and Wednesday night youth events, but I would still like to see our youth invite as many friends from school as possible. Wednesday nights at McDonald's is a great time to invite friends who may not usually go to church, but would like to enjoy a relaxing meal and fellowship. I initially stated that our Prayer Breakfast at McDonald s would be on Saturday morning, but that has been changed to Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., per the youths request. Sorry for any confusion that may have caused. I would like to thank Gaye Fetterolf for volunteering her time to cook for youth during IMPACT Night last Sunday. The youth were excited to finally have a real meal including lasagna, salad, and a great dessert cake!!! Also, I would like to thank Jaime Voigtman for setting up a Sunday night volunteer dinner list. If you would be interested in making dinner for the youth on a particular Sunday night, please contact Mrs. Voigtman at wvoigtman@gmail.com. Lastly, I would like to inform the church of some upcoming events that are going on in our youth group. Sunday, August 28th at 4:00 p.m., I am going to have a Parent's Meeting that will go over all the upcoming events and plans for the youth this semester. If you have a youth in middle school or high school, I greatly encourage coming to this meeting so that you will be in the loop of what is going on the fall with our IMPACT Youth group. Also, Sunday August 28, I will be preaching during both services. This will only be my second time to preach so please be gentle!!! Some of the youth will also participate in the service, so please plan to be in attendance at church next Sunday! God Bless, Ben Schulz Six Week Fall Bible Study to start September 11 Do you remember when Sunday nights had church services? Do you work or need to rest on Sunday mornings? Well, if you answered yes to these questions, then I have an opportunity that might meet your spiritual needs. On six consecutive Sunday evenings from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., you are invited to join me and Adam Hamilton in a Bible Study called The Call the Life and Message of the Apostle Paul. This study will follow the journeys of Paul in Greece and Turkey with on-location views and thoughtful insights. To sign up for a student guide, please contact the church office no later than Friday, September 2. Each study guide will cost $13. All Faiths Day School Needs Brown Egg Cartons We have received a request from Traci at the Day School letting us know that they need brownish egg cartons (the kind that are made of cardboard) to make a project for the art show. They need about 30-40 of them, no blue or pink ones please. If you have the brown egg cartons, you can bring them by the church office. Thank you!

Faithweaver Friends on Life Support School has started. We are having a big celebration of back to school on Saturday, August 27. We will have a bouncy house, face painting, a train ride, and lots of other games. We will also have free hot dogs, popcorn, and drinks. Come and enjoy!!! This event will be free and fun for all ages. We really need volunteers for Faithweaver Friends. We need drivers to pick up children at school and bring them to church. This job only takes about twenty minutes once a week and the children s enthusiasm will bless you. Teachers are also needed. The Faithweaver Friends program is an important outreach for our church, and blesses many children. Please call me at 291-9480 to volunteer! I hope now that school is back in session and that vacationers are back in town, our Sunday School attendance will improve. We have a class for everyone and great teachers that really love the children and love sharing the love of God with them. Y all come out Saturday for the Back to School Bash, it is going to be a lot of fun! ~Mrs. Glenda August is our month for Christian Care Center food donations. The following is a list of recommended items that you can provide: Soup Tuna Small sugar Vegetable oil Spaghetti Bar soap Dish soap You may leave the donations at the church office or deliver them to the center on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm. The wonderful and fulfilling children s outreach ministry called Faithweaver Friends is in danger of not happening in 2016. This important ministry is slated to start September 14th and will run concurrent with the school calendar on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. If you are interested in helping, please call Glenda Delano, Children s Ministry Director, now at 409-291- 9480. If we do not have enough volunteers, this program will not happen this school year, and that would be a great loss both to our community and to our church. Our ministry depends on several volunteers to ensure we offer our best for our children. If you can help once a month or every week, you are needed. The following is a list of opportunities to serve: Making craft kits Transporting children from school to church Help serve snacks Read a story Help children with crafts Play a game with children Sunday School Teachers Needed Our Sunday School program is currently in need of two teachers. The classes that need teachers are 1st/2nd grade children and Unity Adult Class. Materials are available for teaching purposes. If you are interested, please contact Pastor David at 385-5568. Middle School Volunteer Program There is a real opportunity for volunteers in the Silsbee Middle School, and we have been invited back again by Principal Sunee Stephens. Some of the opportunities include the following: 1. Help for the receptionist who has children and parents coming to her desk constantly. 2. Helping the administrative staff during lunch, to be with the children and visit with them. 3. Help in special needs classrooms, working one on one with teachers and students. 4. Help in most of the classrooms, especially if available on a particular day or time. If you have some time to volunteer, please call the church office and let us know how you would like to become involved in this awesome program. The first step in volunteering is to stop by the SISD Administration Building on Hwy 327 West and fill out a simple form to have a background check. The church office is in the process of obtaining some of the volunteer forms, so hopefully they will be available in the office in the near future. Once you pass the background check and receive your photo ID badge, then please notify our church office, and we will get you involved in this great outreach! New Members at First UMC First UMC Silsbee is pleased to welcome two new members in the month of August.
