F I R S T U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H WORSHIP 14th Sunday in Kingdomtide Children's Church August 21, 2016 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2 welcome We Gather Tricia Lindley PRELUDE Sarabande (Seth Bingham) Ty Woodward, Organist *Processional HYMN #139 United Methodist Hymnal Praise to the Lord, the Almighty *Call to Worship Owen Ing, Lay Lector (Based on Psalm 71) Deliver us by your righteousness, Holy One, bend your ear toward us and grant us salvation. God is our rock, our refuge, our saving grace. Even when everything around us is crumbling and collapsing, perfect love casts out our fear. God is our eternal hope and undying love. My praise is always about you. My praise is always about you. *Choral ACT OF PRAISE "All ye who hear: now to His temple draw near; join me in glad adoration." *Sharing the peace of christ Please greet those worshipping near you. CHILDREN S MESSAGe Tricia Lindley #2233 The Faith We Sing Where Children Belong This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshiping throng. Water, God s word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. As the congregation sings, all children are invited to come forward. I Am a Child of God I am a child of God; You are God s child, it s true. Children of God are called to love one another, as Jesus taught to do. As the congregation sings, the children may go to Children's Church in the Chapel. Our Mission & Common Life Rev. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Head Usher today is Al Mead. See an usher if you need assistance. During the summer months the Chancel Choir is singing some of their favorite anthems from the prior year. We hope they are your favorites also. Nursery Care is available at 9 a.m. in Room 204 in the Education Building. Parents with young children are welcome to worship in the sanctuary or in the Kids Zone in the narthex. First UMC takes the care and safety of children seriously. We are a Safe Sanctuary congregation. A changing table is provided in the restroom located in the hallway west of the Fireside Room. Please see an usher for directions. Flowers at the Reredos: Given by Larry and Jean Young in celebration of their 40th Wedding Anniversary. To request prayers, you may fill in a Let's Connect/Let Us Pray card found in the pews, and drop it in the offering plate during worship. If there are Prayer Quilts on the north wall of the sanctuary, you are invited to pray over and tie knots on the quilts. Stop by the Hospitality Table in Simkins Hall in The Shelby Center during Coffee Fellowship today to ask about membership. Visit the Fireside Room after worship to view the photographs by Haylie Wollitz, taken on a recent trip to Nepal. Giving to the church through your will or trust is the most common way to continue your support beyond your lifetime. When your estate plan is prepared, consider a gift. F O C U S O N First UMC membership August 21, 2016 Here at First UMC we are grateful that folks have found their home in this church and make their way here week after week, year after year. We are also very grateful and excited for those who are newer to our church, seeking to learn more about God and more about us. We know that the body of Christ is wide, diverse and vast and thank God it is that way! We hope that if you are newer, or brand new, that you find your home here. Membership is a celebration of the fact that someone belongs to our faith community-connection and commitment. Our belonging promotes service to and with each other, values mutual care, and develops meaningful and supportive relationships. Becoming a member of First UMC is an act of publicly entering into a relationship with our faith community. The church offers thanks and welcome in the spirit of belonging to one another. At First UMC, we belong to God and to one another. If you have questions on becoming a member of First UMC, please contact one of our Pastors, or come to the Newcomer Mingle today after worship in the Fireside Room. Get a cup of coffee, mingle with the pastors, other newcomers and a few leaders of the congregation. Rev. Patricia Farris, Senior Minister p.farris@santamonicaumc.org 310-393-8258 x101 Rev.
