But Deliver Us From Evil Good Friday April 18, 2014

Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary Kathy Scheer, Choir Director Jenny Hullinghoff, Evening Organist Laura Nichols, Morning Organists ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: As we pray in the Lord s Prayer, But deliver us from evil, we remember that because of the sacrificial death of our Lord Jesus Christ, we ultimately are delivered from the greatest of evils separation from God for eternity. Jesus paid the price of our sin so that we might live our lives victorious over every evil that assails us. We bring the final petition of our Lord s Prayer to the foot of the cross and entrust our eternity to our Savior. HYMN Chief of Sinners Though I Be LW 285 INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. OPENING SENTENCES Hebrews 9:12, 15; Psalm 111:9 Christ entered once for all into the holy places, by means of His own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 2

Therefore He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance. He sent redemption to His people; He has commanded His covenant forever. SALUTATION The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. PRAYER OF THE DAY Merciful and everlasting God, You did not spare Your only Son but delivered Him up for us all to bear our sins on the cross. Grant that our hearts may be so fixed with steadfast faith in Him that we fear not the power of sin, death, and the devil; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord. PSALM Psalm 31:1 5; antiphon: v.9a, 15a Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my times are in Your hand. In You, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; In Your righteousness deliver me! 3

Incline Your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me! For You are my rock and my fortress; And for Your name s sake You lead me and guide me; You take me out of the net they have hidden for me, for You are my refuge. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God. Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my times are in Your hand. OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 52:13 53:12 (The Lord s Servant is wounded) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HYMN Jesus, Remember Me HS98 827 Jesus, Remember me when You come into Your Kingdom. Jesus, Remember me when You come into Your Kingdom. EPISTLE Hebrews 4:14 16, 5:7 9 (Jesus is the great High Priest) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4

CATECHISM The Lord s Prayer: The Seventh Petition But deliver us from evil. What does this mean? We pray in this petition, in summary, that our Father in heaven would rescue us from every evil of body and soul, possessions and reputation, and finally, when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this valley of sorrow to Himself in heaven. SERIES HYMN Our Father, Who from Heaven Above LW 431 From evil, Lord, deliver us; The times and days are perilous. Redeem us from eternal death, And, when we yield our dying breath, Console us, grant us calm release, And take our souls to You in peace. Amen, that is, so shall it be. Make strong our faith in You, that we May doubt not but with trust believe That what we ask we shall receive. Thus in Your name and at Your Word We say, Amen, O hear us, Lord! SERMON OFFERING OFFERTORY HYMN On My Heart Imprint Your Image LW 100 5

On my heart imprint Your image, Blessed Jesus, King of grace, That life s riches, cares, and pleasures Never may Your work erase; Let the clear inscription be: Jesus, crucified for me, Is my life, my hope s foundation, And my glory and salvation! Text: Thomas Kingo, 1634 1703; tr. Peer O. Strömme, 1856 1932, alt. Public domain. Tune: DER AM KREUZ, Johann Balthasar König, 1691 1758. Public domain. THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH OFFICE HYMN Cross of Jesus, Cross of Sorrow HS98 823 THE TENEBRAE SEQUENCE After words one through six, a candle will be extinguished on the hearse (candle stand) at the altar. The final candle, symbolizing the light of Christ, will be removed from the altar after the speaking of the Lord s Prayer. After it is removed, a loud sound (strepitus) will be heard, symbolizing the completeness of Christ s sacrifice. The light is returned to the altar, and the congregation departs in reverent silence. FIRST WORD John 19:14 16a, Luke 23:32 34a Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, Behold your King! They cried out, Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him! Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. 6

So he delivered Him over to them to be crucified. Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with Him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on His right and one on His left. And Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. TENEBRAE HYMN Our Savior Spoke with Seven Words HS98 826 Our Savior spoke with seven words As on the cross He died; Through pain and sorrow echoed hope When He was crucified. The first word His forgiveness gave To those who did Him ill; And blessing like a river flowed From Calv ry s holy hill. Text: Gregory J. Wismar, 2004 Gregory J. Wismar. All rights reserved. Used by permission. Tune: KINGSFOLD, English; adapt. and harm. Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872 1958, alt. Public domain. (The first candle is extinguished.) SECOND WORD Luke 23:35 43 And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at Him, saying, He saved others; let Him save Himself, if He is the Christ of God, His Chosen One! The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up and offering Him sour wine and saying, If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself! 7

There was also an inscription over Him, This is the King of the Jews. One of the criminals who were hanged railed at Him, saying, Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us! But the other rebuked him, saying, Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong. And he said, Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom. And He said to him, Truly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise. We praise You, O Christ, and we bless You; By Your cross and precious death You have redeemed the world. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried all of our sorrow. Lord Jesus, while You hung on the cross You showed mercy to the dying thief. With that mercy look on us also we pray, and at our last hour, comfort us with Your promise that we will dwell forever in paradise with You. (The second candle is extinguished.) THIRD WORD John 19:25 27 But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, Woman, behold, your son! Then He said to the disciple, Behold, your 8

mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. TENEBRAE HYMN Our Savior Spoke with Seven Words HS98 826 The second word gave heaven s hope; The dying thief found peace For Jesus promised on this day His joy would never cease. To meet His grieving mother s needs His third word did He share And brought a new relationship For John and Mary there. Text: Gregory J. Wismar, 2004 Gregory J. Wismar. All rights reserved. Used by permission. Tune: KINGSFOLD, English; adapt. and harm. Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872 1958, alt. Public domain. (The third candle is extinguished.) FOURTH WORD Matthew 27:45 47 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, This Man is calling Elijah. We praise You, O Christ, and we bless You; By Your cross and precious death You have redeemed the world. Keep us mindful of Your abiding presence with us 9

That our witness to the love You have shown us may never falter or fail. Grant, we pray, merciful Lord, to Your faithful people pardon and peace; cleanse us from all our sins, so that we may serve You with a quiet mind, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, (The fourth candle is extinguished.) FIFTH WORD Matthew 10:38 42, John 19:28 29 And whoever does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. Whoever receives you receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), I thirst. A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to His mouth. TENEBRAE HYMN Our Savior Spoke with Seven Words HS98 826 The fourth word from Christ s loneliness 10

And desolation came As sinking in abandonment He called His Father s name. As for the sins of all He died, The Shepherd for the sheep, His fifth word of His thirst He spoke To slake the sorrow deep. Text: Gregory J. Wismar, 2004 Gregory J. Wismar. All rights reserved. Used by permission. Tune: KINGSFOLD, English; adapt. and harm. Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872 1958, alt. Public domain. (The fifth candle is extinguished.) SIXTH WORD Hebrews 9:11 12, 15, 27 28, John 19:30a But when Christ appeared as a High Priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) He entered once for all into the Holy Places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of His own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption... Therefore He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant... And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him. 11

When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, It is finished. We praise You, O Christ, and we bless You; By Your cross and precious death You have redeemed the world. May we begin all of our works of charity and love in Your name, And may we find Your blessing in their completion to Your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, You set the boundaries of our lives and grant us tasks to do in Your name. In Your great love, You did not stop short of finishing the task given to You by Your Father. With the aid of the Holy Spirit, lead us to complete all You intend for us to do in this world until that time when we share in Your eternal presence in the world to come. (The sixth candle is extinguished.) SEVENTH WORD Luke 23:44 46, Matthew 27:54 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit! And having said this He breathed his last. When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, Truly this was the Son of God! 12

TENEBRAE HYMN Our Savior Spoke with Seven Words HS98 826 The sixth word spoke of victory His hours of passion done; His finished work to God He gave As ever-faithful Son. And with His labor at its end His last word came as prayer Committing all He did and was To God s unending care. Text: Gregory J. Wismar, 2004 Gregory J. Wismar. All rights reserved. Used by permission. Tune: KINGSFOLD, English; adapt. and harm. Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872 1958, alt. Public domain. Almighty God, we ask You to look with mercy on Your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed and given over to the hands of sinful men to suffer death on the cross; who now lives and reign with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end, TENEBRAE HYMN Our Savior Spoke with Seven Words HS98 826 Our Savior spoke with seven words As on the cross He died; Through pain and sorrow echoed hope When He was crucified. In garden tomb His body lay Awaiting Easter day; 13

With resurrection hope may we Yet follow in His way. Text: Gregory J. Wismar, 2004 Gregory J. Wismar. All rights reserved. Used by permission. Tune: KINGSFOLD, English; adapt. and harm. Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872 1958, alt. Public domain. PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, graciously behold this Your family for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed and delivered into the hands of sinful men to suffer death upon the cross; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. 14

CLOSING COLLECT Almighty and everlasting God, You willed that Your Son should bear for us the pains of the cross and so remove from us the power of the adversary. Help us so to remember and give thanks for our Lord s passion that we may receive forgiveness of sin and redemption from everlasting death; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. HYMN Were You There LW 505 (morning service) MEN S CHOIR Were You There (evening service) (The removal of the final candle, the strepitus, and the return and replacement of the candle concludes the service and looks toward the blessed joy of Easter morning. The congregation leaves in silence with minimal light.) Creative Worship for the Lutheran Parish, Series A, Part 2. Copyright 2013 Concordia Publishing House. All rights reserved.
