Community Programs at PAS 948- FOCUS ON ISRAEL As Israel s 70th anniversary year continues, Park Avenue Synagogue will continue to focus programming on learning Israel s story and appreciating the challenges that face the Jewish state today. With lectures by Israeli leaders, Hebrew classes, a 5-part series combining in-person and online study with an Israeli scholar, our 2nd annual Scholar-in-Residence week, and culminating in the Congregational Trip to Israel in December, the entire fall will offer rich opportunities to examine Israel s history, to imagine her future, and to consider what the State of Israel means to our identity as Jews living in the diaspora. Come to a lecture, learn Hebrew, or share Insights from Israel in a monthly videoconference. Continue celebrating Israel in the new year. 12 Park Avenue Synagogue

Community Programs Focus on Israel Cosponsored by The Jewish Week WILL THERE BE JEWS IN 100 YEARS? TUE OCT 9 TIME TBA PAS@87TH TAL KEINAN, BRET STEPHENS, AND RABBI COSGROVE With the Jewish People concentrated in two hubs America and Israel a subtle but vital feature of diaspora life has been lost. For 2,000 years, Jews adjusted to evolving realities by redefining Judaism. Yet it seems that when confronted with the 21st century s unprecedented rates of social, economic, and political change, we lack the tools to chart a new course. As a result, Judaism is faltering. Will we reconcile ourselves to the prospect of a world without Judaism, or will we draft and implement a new vision for the Jewish future? The choice is ours. $ RSVP Tal Keinan is a social activist, business leader, Israeli fighter pilot, and author of the critically acclaimed God Is in the Crowd: Twenty-First Century Judaism. Bret Stephens is a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, author and op-ed columnist for The New York Times. Focus on Israel SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE AT PAS ISRAEL: LOOKING GOOD AT 70! WITH SHALOM ORZACH MON SAT NOV 5 11 Our second annual weeklong Scholarin-Residence is Shalom Orzach, senior educator and consultant for the icenter in Israel. Shalom will teach about Israel in all our educational departments throughout the week and will speak at a community Shabbat dinner on Friday. Related to our theme of Telling Israel s Story, Mr. Orzach will use Israel's 70th anniversary as a lens through which we can focus on the compelling opportunities afforded by sovereignty and independence. In Jewish tradition, the number seventy evokes rich and textured symbolism: It alludes to the multiple ways we interpret our Torah as well as to the age that signifies wisdom. The establishment of the State of Israel required audacious dreamers and courageous doers. It is striking that many of the founders were both. We will consider the dreams of both early and contemporary Zionists and review the extent to which our realities live up to and give expression to their hopes. We will study the multiple perspectives the Shivim Panim and further enhance our relationship with the miracle called Israel. 14 Park Avenue Synagogue

Community Programs READING JEWISH LIVES: EXPLORING THE JEWISH EXPERIENCE TOGETHER Jewish Lives, published by the Yale University Press and the Leon D. Black Foundation, is a prizewinning series dedicated to illuminating the range and depth of the Jewish experience from antiquity to present. We will read one of these biographies in the fall and one in the spring, engaging in small group discussions and hearing presentations by the authors. To join or create a book discussion group, visit pasyn.org/jewish lives. AUTHOR EVENTS Sponsored by Tikkun Olam VICKI K.
