All the home-baked cookies in tins (or subsequently placed in additional tins by my wife) were delivered to the port, ready for our chaplains to bring on board ships last week. I might add that my wife was clear that I need not help her pack the cookies, so all of them safely made it to the ports. Kindly convey my appreciation for all the cookies that the WELCA ladies for their generosity. Peace, Christopher V. Roehrer, Director Development and Communication Seafarers & International House 123 East 15 th Street New York, NY 10003 212-677-4800 (ext. 1203) Our Mission and Purpose As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world. 1

Why a WELCA group is important in your church When I met the new pastor s wife she asked about our WELCA and when I said we didn t have one she was resolved: Well, we will just have to start one. I had been a member of a busy, wonderful group at my last church and led bible studies from Gather magazine. So the two of us started. We invited every woman and talked about how it would be a special place to do projects, ministry and have fun. We wanted to socialize and find ways to support the members. We have made progress. Attendance seems to be growing. We had a coed Christmas party which included a nursing home project of filling socks with products like soap, shampoo and combs. We formed a telephone chain to support members newly home from hospital with meals. We have finally elected officers and adopted a constitution. How do I explain to someone why we need a group just for women when I am so happy to be part of a church that not only ordains women but has a female bishop in the state and nationally? - Jesus recognized the gifts and value of women and we need to remind ourselves of our role in the church. - Women are important to the faith journey your church is on and need a place to rest, grow and renew. - The Bible studies give women unfettered access to comment and learn. Sometimes we are shy in a mixed group. The Gather studies are written by women and use a female view of the Bible. - Women have a unique view of service and see needs that might be missed in the larger church. - Women in a group are supportive sisters and eager to help each other. I am touched and enriched by our small group s progress and look forward to growing this group into as many smaller ones as are needed. I encourage all churches both with and without WELCA to treasure and to nurture their women and their gifts by making WELCA a part of the plan. By Linda Wohlert Benitz, Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, Manahawkin 2

What s Happening in Your Unit? The women of Grace Lutheran Church, Somers Point, have been busy! This was our 3rd year taking part in the Christ Shoe Box project. This worthwhile event is sponsored by Samaritan's Purse. There were 25 boxes sent out to various areas of our country and around the world to be presented to children who otherwise might not have a Happy Christmas. Our Thanksgiving remembrances for our 'shut-ins' were assembled and packaged this November. Joan Glenz donated 14 pictures from her 'coloring for Adults' book, which were put into frames and wrapped along with a Thanksgiving card sending our best wishes. It was a fun project for the group - and hopefully meaningful for the recipients. Last Christmas we distributed little red stockings and asked people to add dimes each month, corresponding to the month number of the year (ie, January - add 1 dime, December - add 12 dimes) for a total of $7.80. These stocking donations went to our Food Pantry to help with the Thanksgiving Baskets we assemble. The Grace Stitchers filled 52 gift bags with two knitted items each, either a hat and scarf or a cowl and a vest, plus the items donated by a generous congregation here at Grace. Paige Sato's departing words on November 8th as she left Somers Point to drive back to her job at the Seamen's Institute in Elizabeth were, "Thank Heaven for Grace Lutheran Church and their wonderful generosity." She added, "The Seamen always are happy to receive a deck of cards and puzzle books in their bags as well as personal items and snacks. So again you blessed people have come through to spread some happiness to others far away!" Now the Stitchers are gearing up for the Baby Shower in May for Shore Medical Center. It's always such a joy to work on the blankets, hats, booties, etc. We are always ready to welcome new stitchers to our group. We meet every Friday morning in the church Lounge from 10:30 am to 12 noon. What s your story? We want to hear what your unit is up to. Email news about events or special happenings within your unit to njwelca@yahoo.com. 3

Thankoffering Service Saturday, March 18, 2016 at 10:00 am Join us for this Synod-wide Gathering North Jersey Location: South Jersey Location: St. John Lutheran Church St. Michael Lutheran Church 155 North Main St. 601 Kings Highway North Jersey City, NJ 07307 Cherry Hill, NJ 08034 In-Kind Offering: Non-Perishable Food Items for the St. John Food Pantry In-Kind Offering: Socks & Underwear for New Visions Homeless Day Shelter **All Monetary offerings go towards the support of the WELCA Churchwide organization Help us save a place for YOU! Please RSVP. What is a Thankoffering? Thankofferings are offerings given as an expression of thanks. There are moments in each day when we can and should be thankful to God. It can be something as significant as a child's first step, a recovery from illness or landing a new job. It can be something as ordinary as seeing your child off to school complete with lunch and homework, making it home safely after rush hour on the expressway, or listening to bird calls while walking through your backyard. When any of these significant or ordinary moments happen, we can say thank you to God. We Lutheran women also have a tradition of combining our prayer of thanks with an offering gift--a thankoffering. That's why we have those cardboard boxes known as Thankoffering boxes. When that moment happens and we are thankful, we place an offering into the box as a further expression of our thanks. (Please post this flyer for your congregation) 4

Mark your calendars. You don t want to miss it! The Tenth Triennial Gathering will be held July 13-16, 2017, in Minneapolis, Minn. "All Anew" is the theme. While the planning continues, think about ways in which God is calling our organization to new ventures. Visit http://www.welcatg.org/coloring-devotionals for info & free devotionals to help your unit prepare. COLORING DEVOTIONALS Color, pray, explore All Anew This series of five devotions is designed to help you prepare for the Tenth Triennial Gathering, deepening your understanding of the All Anew theme and accompanying verses. Enjoy the meditative practice of coloring as part of the devotions. ELCA pastor Melissa Bills, associate pastor at First Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa, wrote the five devotionals that accompany the theme verses. Whether used in a congregational setting, at a synodical event or in the quiet of one s home, these five devotions are important groundwork for women coming to the Tenth Triennial Gathering. The theme verse in each devotion is based on The Message, a contemporary biblical paraphrase written by Eugene H. Peterson. The devotions include: Renewal of Creation (Psalms 104:30) Renewal of Sight (Isaiah 43:19) Renewal of Spirit (Romans 12:2) Renewal of Hope (2 Corinthians 4:16) Renewal of Life (Titus 3:4-5) 6

Be sure to check out Gather s Winter Bible Study by Kit Kleinhans, a professor at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. The four-session Reformation anniversary Bible study focuses on Galatians: Christian faith and Christian freedom. "Biblical scholars describe Paul s letter to the Galatians as the Magna Carta of Christian freedom," Kleinhans writes. "Martin Luther called it 'my Katie von Bora.' Like his marriage to Katie, Luther s relationship with Galatians was a rich and lasting one: over a period of 20 years, he published six commentaries on the epistle. Luther s reformation was centered in the doctrine of justification by grace through faith for Christ s sake, which he saw as the heart of Paul s letter to the Christians in Galatia. It is also the heart of Paul s and Luther s message for us today." Session 1: No other Gospel (Galatians 1:1-2:21) Session 2: Children of God through faith (Galatians 2:19-3:29) Session 3: Heirs of the promise (Galatians 3:24-4:31) Session 4: For freedom Christ has set us free (Galatians 5:1-6:18) Order your copy of Gather by calling 800-638-3522 ext. 2580 or visit http://resources.elca.org/products-women.html ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ DONATION for NJ Circular $5.00 OR MORE TO HELP DEFRAY THE COST!
