C H I L H O W E E B A P T I S T M E S S E N G E R C H A R M CHARM UPSIDE DOWN ACTIVITIES Page 2 Ongoing Ministries Sunday Morning Service: Services at the CHARM building began when the Sunday Morning Campground services ended due to the cooler weather. The service starts at 9:30am. Dress is casual and everyone is invited. We have had campers and others who have come and expressed how much they enjoyed the fellowship, music, and message. Wednesday Morning Bible Study This Bible study is led by Steve Monroe at KOA Sweet Shoppe during the winter and the KOA outdoor pavilion during warmer weather. This group has now developed a Facebook site called Townsend KOA Bible Study. Average attendance through November was 16. Everyone is invited and this Bible study is year round. We have been studying the book of Revelation and the 7 doors of Jesus Christ. The study starts at 8:30am. Motel Ministry: In late October, the first breakfast event was held at the CHARM building. Steve and Kathy Myers, Pat Flynn, and Linda Ledford greeted and served over 29 motel workers and owners. Not only did they enjoy a hot breakfast complete with beverages, fruits, and sweets, but they also expressed appreciation for the breakfast and excitement for the door prizes awarded. It was such a blessing to see and hear Linda Ledford, as she talk to the workers and owners that she first met when she first started this motel ministry many years ago. Pat and Kathy continued weekly visits to the motels through November providing snacks, bottled water, a children s card and Bible story. With fewer tourists many of the motels have now laid off workers. Contact is being maintained with some of the workers by periodic on-site visits and by mail or email. Recently, a worker who went to California called Kathy to give her a new address, so the worker could continue to receive the Bible stories by mail. Emails are also being sent to workers locally and as far away as Mongolia. Several individuals have given money for gift cards to be given to workers in need of gas or food. Townsend Elementary: On Friday, December 15th, 135 Christmas stockings were distributed to the students. Springview Baptist Church Ladies sewing group provided the fabric and made these stockings for CHARM. Team members filled each stocking with a story of the candy cane, as it relates to JESUS, a bookmark, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and candy. Each student also received a new, wrapped Bible story book. The children were so excited and could hardly wait to receive their stockings and books. On Tuesday, December 19, CHARM team members returned to Townsend Elementary with special backpacks to give to the students. These backpacks were requested by the Ledfords last January through the North American Mission Board s Backpacks for Appalachian Program through Appalachian Regional Ministry (ARM). After these backpacks arrived, CHARM team members sorted them by age group and checked each for items. Each student received a new zippered backpack filled with items such as school supplies, a small item of new clothing, non-perishable food, an age appropriate toy, hygiene items, a Bible, and candy. Most importantly, the team members shared with the students about the true Christmas story. In addition, each teacher received a small encouragement pottery pot filled with slips of Bible scripture. These pots were made especially for CHARM by Julie Keeper in Georgia. CHARM knows that teachers love chocolate, so their candy jars are filled on a regular monthly basis. Kids return to school, many people who work outside in landscaping and mowing begin to see a slowdown in work, and the homeless begin to try to find shelter from the cold and dampness. During these times we serve about all we can handle each day. Our food supplies and clothing have been good so it was a thankful season. We passed out 125 Thanksgiving meals including 25 from Gracie s restaurant for our clients. Most of these came from Mt. Zion Church and we are always thankful for them and their heart for the needy families we serve. Our Christmas distributions this year were also very good. We were able to supply 250 meals for families in need. We also had extras that we have also been sharing with our clients now before Christmas. Winter can be hard for families in need and we are always glad to see the bounty that comes from you. Reconciled Ministries has been doing well and we have about 30-35 on a regular basis. There is still a huge need in Blount County to reach out to those whose lives and families have been ruined by drugs and alcohol. Pray for us as we try to reach all we can through this ministry. The address is 2317 US Hwy 411 South, Maryville, TN 37801. It is located across from Taco Bell, Zaxby s and Walmart on 411 South. Four Mile is scheduled there on 1/21. CAMP TIPTON V O L U M E 7 I S S U E 1 Page 5 January and February look to be busy months for Camp Tipton! Already, preparations for the summer are taking place, as we look forward to another year of reaching the lost and discipling believers. We are also very excited to begin our process of building two new bunkhouses! However, in order to do so we need your help. From the end of January until May, we will need groups of volunteers @ Camp Tipton virtually every weekend to help build these structures that will allow us to reach more people. If you or a group from your church would like to know more, there will be an interest meeting @ 6:00pm on Tuesday, January 16. We will provide dinner and give information on how you or your group can help, and begin scheduling groups for weekends throughout the spring. If you would like to attend this meeting, please RSVP by January 12th so we know how much food we will need. F R O M P A G E 2 New Winter Time Activities and Special Events: Community Events: The owners of Mountaineer Campground asked for and received permission to use the CHARM building for their annual Thanksgiving Dinner that they provide each year for their campers. 54 people came to enjoy the Thanksgiving Day meal. It was a great time to show the campers how we use the building for multiple events. Fellowship was wonderful. The owners are very supportive of CHARM. They allow CHARM to hold Sunday morning services at their campground s pavilion during warm weather and also allow teams to do children and family activities during June and July in the campground. Pictures of this event are on CHARM website. Christmas Parade: Were you in Townsend for the Christmas Parade on December 3 rd? If you were there, then you saw the first ever entry of CHARM in the Townsend Christmas parade. The theme this year was, Then and Now. Then was a Nativity scene of Baby JE- SUS, Mary (Philana Potter), and Joseph (Charles Potter). The Now was the decorated CHARM Chapel representing the Church. Steve Monroe (mandolin), Randy Hicks (guitar), and Scott Lane (guitar) played on the porch of the chapel, while Steve Self sang Christmas carols. Many people from the sidelines could be heard singing along, and people could be heard telling their children, There s Baby JESUS. Looking back on the photos posted on Facebook, CHARM s entry appears to be the only entry that had the Nativity portrayed. Free Gift Wrapping at the Townsend IGA: This annual community event was held on Friday, December 22 nd and Saturday, December 23 rd from 10am-4pm. While gift wrapping was going on in the Chapel, CHARM team members and volunteers gave out free cookies, hot chocolate, and Bible story books. Most importantly, the true Christmas story was told to adults and children that were waiting for their gifts to be wrapped. This is an important CHARM outreach allowing us to meet and connect with people in the community. Blessing Box: Nana s Blessing Box was installed outside the CHARM center on December 14th. Items such as diapers, wipes, non-perishable food items, small toys, devotional material, and Bibles were added for the community to take. This Blessing Box was made by Heritage High School students and Rimmer s Welding made and donated the stand. The box is weather and bear proof. Blessing Boxes are being placed throughout our country for people to take what you need and leave what you can. This box is named in memory of a Nana who passed away unexpectedly this year who loved to give gifts to others. Upcoming Events: Plans are being made for a Saturday evening Gospel Sing- A long and a possible movie night starting in January as an outreach for the community. While we have had many changes in 2017 with the retirement of Joe and Linda Ledford, we are striving to maintain the many avenues of ministry they started, and we are excited to see what else GOD has planned for CHARM. Page 7 HELP West Africa What began in 2010 as planting the seed of the gospel through Bible Storying has now become a small group of believers joining together as a church. This small group is growing and reaching out to surrounding villages so that others can here the Good News! Your Help is needed! to establish this small group of believers and assist their village in meeting their basic physical needs. The Chilhowee Baptist Association is seeking to raise $15,000 to assist in the development of an agricultural process for year-round gardening using foot pumps (pictured to the right) for irrigation. This project will help each village have a greater supply of food products during the difficult dry season each year. The educational process will include a clear presentation of the Gospel illustrating Jesus as the living water that brings life to all that would believe. We have two teams scheduled for January and February to implement this project before the next planting season arrives in May.
