OCTOBER 2012 Anajali Advocate ANAJALI PRIMARY SCHOOL, KIBERA SLUM, NAIROBI, KENYA Wellingtone Nabwoba Head Teacher Anajali Primary School Kibera Slum Nairobi, Kenya Anajali offers education to those children in the slum who are too poor to access the public education. Children receive a good education through Class 8 as well as one good meal a day. They also learn about Jesus Christ and are given the opportunity to give their lives to God. They are taught good morals and good citizenship. Anne Blodgett washing her hands at the newly installed water spigots. For the first time since the school was founded in 2000, the children can wash their hands after using the toilet and before eating their meal. Thank you from Anajali. Dear Friends in the USA, Thank you for the slippers (flip-flops.) Thank you for the water. Thank you for the toothbrushes. Thank you for the microscopes. Thank you for the pencil sharpeners. Thank you for the pencils. Thank you for the rubbers (erasers) and for the colors (crayons.) Thank you for all these gifts that you have sent for us all. May God bless you. Leonida, Wellingtone s wife, and some of the students plant the flowers along the top of the wall where the water spigots are. The yellow buckets are holding water to give the flowers a drink as they get put into the ground. (Note from an Anajali student.) Planting a small tree along the top of the wall. Anne Blodgett was given the privilege of planting the first one. Each class has a tree for which they are responsible. They must see that it is watered and cared for.

MISSION TRIP REPORT My life, the way I think and look at things, has been forever changed by the trip to Kenya. I felt at home and welcomed by the children and teachers. I had asked God to use my talents and strengths, but what I had not been prepared for was the abundance of Blessings that our whole team received and the way each day unfolded. It is my fervent prayer to return. One of the Class 8 girls, named Dorcas, shared in a note to me, Joshua 1:9. I thinks it is a verse that many of us can use everyday and I thank Dorcas for reminding me to be strong and courageous because God is in Control. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 by Lisa Lisa removes her artificial foot to show the children the marvels of science and how she copes with her disability. Malaina having fun at Anajali. Haily helps a child find just the right pair of flip-flops, which the children call slippers. Emily with a Baby Class child. My name is Emily. I am 12. I had a lot of fun interacting with the kids at Anajali. It was amazing seeing how excited they got over a pencil like you had given them a huge gift. It was fun but hard work organizing all the things to bring to the school. The food was different then what we have, but it was really good. My over all experience was wonderful and eye opening. How much we take for granted in this country. by Emily Going to Africa was an absolutely amazing experience. It was awesome to see how people praised God in the toughest situations, making our faith look so weak. I loved all the children and got to meet my sponsor child Queen. I hope to go in the coming year and experience Africa again. Col. 3:23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men. by Malaina

More mission note news. Devotions being led by Carl How blessed we are and how little we acknowledge our blessings. I realized this in a new way as I spent time at Anajali. Just having a warm shower is a blessing. Realizing that leads to an even more important blessing: It was clear from the responses we received from the teachers and the children that God has given us these material blessings so we can be His sheep, serving Him: The King will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. (Matt 25:40) by Carl Chris worked steadily as a mud building was demolished to make way for a new classroom building. Chris says that she didn t know just what she would be doing when we left for Africa, but there was always something to do for everyone. It was an amazing experience to be at Anajal. Chris Carl was able to bring six microscopes to Anajali which had been donated by Norwich University in Vermont. Great excitement permeated the classrooms as students and teachers learned how to use these instruments. Teachers looking through microscopes. Carl preparing to teach how to make a slide for the microscope. Carl taking nails out of pieces of limb wood used in house construction.

Elizabeth working construction and getting dirty. My visit to Anajali met and exceeded my expectations. Although I had heard about the poverty as well as the joy and hope that the Lord brings to these people, I did not expect to feel so at home. My heart was touched by the openness, kindness and love that was poured out on us. We measured, weighed, and photographed the students and teachers. We did art projects. We sang and danced together. We demolished a building to make way for another classroom. Whatever work we did, we did for the Anajali community and for the Lord. As a teacher, the skill and dedication of the teaching staff impressed me. I learned many things that I will bring back to my classroom. I left part of my heart at the Anajali School and my greatest prayer is that I can return and work along side my Kenyan brothers and sisters in Christ again. by Elizabeth Haily and I had a fantastic time in K e n y a o n t h i s Missions trip. It w a s s i m p l y amazing to see w h a t G o d w a s doing and to have the opportunity to participate. It was a t r u l y l i f e c h a n g i n g experience, and at the end of every day, it was very rewarding to see because of the work we had done. The children are just adorable. We highly encourage anyone with any interest in going to Kenya to come visit and serve the Anajali Primary School on a missions trip; you won t regret it. by Chris and Haily Christopher helping with paper work. the smiles on the faces of the students and teachers Haily with her and Christopher s sponsored child. Praises 1. Praise God for the faithful support of those who partner with Anajali to provide education, basic needs, and the Word of God to these children who would have no opportunity to hear God s Word or be in school except for Anajali. 2. Praise God that the teacher strike in Kenya is over. 3. Praise God for the opportunities Wellingtone has to preach on the radio and minister to the people in the slums.

DIMES FOR DINNERS Needed: Cost: Food for the children. $200 dollars a week. or 10 cents per child per meal. School children at Anajali line up at the kitchen window to receive their mid-day meal. For many of them, this is the only meal they have during the six AM to six PM school day. Because of the public school teacher strike that lasted for a month, all schools must stay in session through the month of December rather than closing the third week of November. This requires more food than anticipated. Help feed hungry children. Contribute your dimes so that these children can count on at least one meal a day. Jesus says in Matthew 25:40b inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to me. Be the hands and feet of Jesus and feed the children. Thank you for your generosity. Prayer Requests 1. Pray that the children may have food to eat each day. 2. Pray for safety as the nation of Kenya faces elections for a new President on March 4, 2013. 3. Pray for Brenda s hospital bills to be paid so that she can have the wires removed from her jaw after her jaw was shattered when she was hit by a vehicle. 4. Pray for the teachers and staff of the Anajali School. Teacher Linda and Teacher Dominic are both new teachers. Pray that they will adjust to the schedule and the demands of teaching. 5. Pray for the Class 8 students that they will have sponsors to attend high school in 2013.
