THE ADVENT OF OUR LORD Our Savior Lutheran Church Newton, Iowa December 13, 2017

THE ADVENT OF OUR LORD Advent 2 December 13, 2017 SERVICE OF LIGHT (Please stand) P The Spirit and the Church cry out: C Come, Lord Jesus. P All those who await His appearance pray: C Come, Lord Jesus. P The whole creation pleads: C Come, Lord Jesus. HYMN O Light Whose Splendor LSB 891 P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P Blessed are You, O Lord our God,.Father, Son and Holy Spirit. C Amen. (Please be seated) PSALM Psalm 24 The earth is the Lord s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! 2

Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory! Glory by to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning is now, and will be forever. Amen. FIRST READING 11:1, 6-10 and 12-16 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder s den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious. He will raise a signal for the nations and will assemble the banished of Israel, and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. The jealousy of Ephraim shall depart, and those who harass Judah shall be cut off; Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah, and Judah shall not harass Ephraim. But they shall swoop down on the shoulder of the Philistines in the west, 3

and together they shall plunder the people of the east. They shall put out their hand against Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites shall obey them. And the Lord will utterly destroy the tongue of the Sea of Egypt, and will wave his hand over the River with his scorching breath, and strike it into seven channels, and he will lead people across in sandals. And there will be a highway from Assyria for the remnant that remains of his people, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt. P This is the Word of our Lord. SECOND READING 1 Timothy 3:16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. P This is the Word of the Lord. HYMN What Hope! An Eden Prophesied LSB 342 THE GOSPEL READING John 1:1-18 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might 4

believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John bore witness about him, and cried out, This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me. ) And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father s side, he has made him known. P This is the Word of the Lord. P In many and various ways God spoke to His people of old by the prophets. C But now in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son. (Please stand) HYMN My Soul Rejoices LSB 933 LITANY P In peace let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. P..let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. (Repeat several times) P For the faithful who have gone before us and are with Christ, let us give thanks to the Lord. P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. 5

(Silence for meditation) P Rejoicing in the fellowship of all the saints, let us commend ourselves, one another, and our whole life to Christ, our Lord. C To You, O Lord. P O God, from whom come.. Through the merits of Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, God forever. C Amen. P Lord, remember us in Your Kingdom, and teach us to pray: C Our Father (The Lord s Prayer is printed on the back cover of the hymnal.) P Let us bless the Lord. OFFERING SERMON By Pastor David Brandt HYMN Savior of the Nations, Come LSB 332 (read verse by verse within the sermon) (Please stand) HYMN Savior of the Nations, Come LSB 332 PRAYER P.through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen. BLESSING P The almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless and preserve you. C Amen. Announcements BUILDING HEALTHY FAMILIES You have heard the saying, the family that prays together, stays together? A survey by the Barna Research Group indicates that this old saying is still true, not just for families but also for married couples. Research documents that couples who hold a shared belief system (including prayer and attending church regularly) have a significantly lower divorce rate than the general population. So just a little reminder in case you didn t already know: growing in your faith is not only good for you and for your children, it s good for your marriage! Lutheran Family Service of Iowa - 6200 Aurora Ave., Ste 410W, Urbandale, IA 50322 (515-251-4900) LIFE QUOTES As we bask in the glow of God Himself choosing, from His freedom and through His immeasurable power, to sanctify every aspect and moment of human life by taking flesh and passing through every stage of human growth and development, and sanctifying each of those moments, let s do the very hard work of taking our faith seriously and, knowing God loves us and will always forgive every sin, let s winsomely and gently live in such a way we show the world a better way. Fr. Barnabas Powell, Cumming, Georgia - A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life - www.lutheransforlife.org. CHILDREN S PRACTICE We will have Children s Program practice on Saturday, Dec. 16th from 9:00-11:00am. CHILDREN S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM Please join Sunday, Dec. 17th at 8:00am our Christmas Jubilee!
