GROWING IN THE POWER OF GOD Sylvester Onyemalechi God s power is the same and always constant. It neither increases nor decreases. Growing in the power of God therefore does not mean that God is acquiring more power by the day. It is the believer who grows in the manifestation of God s power. God is constant and does not increase or decrease in size, wisdom, strength, power and abilities. He is the same always and never changes in anything. It is important this point be made clear so you can trust the Lord with all your heart to make you who He wants you to be. God does not grow in power but the believer does. The believer grows in the manifestation of the power of God. The believer is expected to grow in the manifestation of the power of God there are many factors responsible for growth and stagnation in the life of a Christian. As our knowledge of God increases, so our ability to manifest His power. It is therefore important that we learn how to grow in the power of God. This is what we want to achieve in this study. HOW TO GROW IN POWER 1. Growing in the knowledge of Christ will make you grow in power. Jesus is the Power of God. To know Him is to know the power of God. To grow strong in Him is to grow strong in the power of God. 1 Cor 1:24 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Cor 1:18 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Rom 1:16 16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. Give yourself to Jesus Christ and learn of Him so you can become who he is in character and in demonstration of the power of God. 2. Growing in the word of God enhances growth in the power of God.

It takes walking with God according to His words to increase the outflow of God s power in a believer. God whom we serve is a principled and meticulous God. He walks and abides by the rules He himself has set. Obedience releases the power of God, while disobedience hinders the outflow of the power of God. The promises of God are activated to come to pass when we obey God s instruction for the release of power to accomplish it. Therefore when one is working in disobedience and at the same time expecting God to manifest His power to do what he desires, is deception and a chasing after the wind. God s power is only released as we walk in obedience. Isa 1:19 19 If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land; John 2:1-11 2:1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." 4 "Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My time has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." 11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him. If you want to see the power of God in your life and in the life of others, do what God says and you will see God s power as in the above story. Give yourself to the word of God and you will grow in the power of God as you learn God s ways and principles and walk in them. Rom 12:2 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Meditate on the word of God to understand it very well and act according to what is written. 3. Prayer and fasting enhances power. There is no overemphasizing the fact that fasting and prayer is an enhancer of, or a booster of God s power in a believer. As you fast and pray regularly with all your heart, you deepen your love and relationship with God, and as you do that you lose interest in the things of this world and give more of yourself to God, and this releases the power of God more in a believer. As long as you are more concerned about making money and pursuing career, you will see little of God s power. You are likely to see more of God s power in making progress in your life and career than in any other area because you focus on that and call God more in that area to prove Himself. You will discover that as you give yourself to the word of God and fast and pray daily with seriousness for prosperity of God s house and kingdom, the salvation of souls, your nation, those in need and in crisis, suffering humanity and leaders of the church. If you will give less attention to yourself in your prayers, God will definitely increase the outflow of God s power in your life as you get cleansed daily in His presence through the Word of God, fasting and prayers. Do not be self-centered in your prayers and fasting if you want to see the outflow of God s power in and through your life. Isa 58:4-12 4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high. 5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself? Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? 6 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter--when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? 8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. 9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. "If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, 10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. 11 The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. 12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

Luke 4:1-2 4:1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. Luke 4:14-15 14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. Jesus came back in the power of the Holy Spirit because He spent His time interceding for mankind who He came to save through His sacrifice and ministry. The same will happen to you if you will become selfless in your daily prayers. 4. Faith and power consciousness gives boldness to activate and release the power of God in you. You must always believe you have the power of God in you in full and walk in the consciousness of this power. You must believe that you have all the power you will ever need to make it in life and achieve anything God wants you to achieve for Him. Acts 3:2-10 2 Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!" 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. 6 Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. If Peter and John did not know and believe that they had power from Jesus to heal the man, they would not have tried it. You must believe you have power from God. If you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit you have the power of God in your life. All the power you will ever need has been deposited in you waiting for you to acknowledge, release and maximize it. The more you believe

and walk in the consciousness of this power, you will see miracles daily in your life and in the life of others. Acts 1:8 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 2 Peter 1:3-4 3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 5. Practice helps release and maximizing the power of God in man s life. Practice, they say, makes perfect. The more you exercise yourself in the gift and call of God upon your life, the outflow of God s power will increase in your life. Any power or ability not exercised remains dormant and inactive. The more you pray for the sick you will see the healing anointing grow in you. The more you use the gifts and anointing upon your life, the more it grows. John 4:34 34 "My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Heb 5:14 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. CONCLUSION This calls for hard work in drawing closer to God and seeking to be intimate with Him. Study and submit to the word of God with all your heart. Learn of Jesus Christ as He commanded those who will come to Him and you will discover that as you walk in the divine principles that He will reveal to you, the outflow of God s power in and through you will be increasing by the day. Believe that you are who God says you are, that you have what God says you have, that you can do what God says you can do and you will become who God says you will become. Walk daily in the consciousness of God s power.
