Learning to Bless Others Numbers 6:22-27 Intro: There is something special about blessing other people. Some people get jealous when others get blessed and they don t. But we should be happy when others get a blessing of some kind. Romans 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. We need to be happy when others receive God s blessings: - a new child - a promotion - a new car - a new house - a great vacation Not only do we need to be happy when others get blessed, we need to invoke God s blessing on them. Numbers 6:22-27 states, [22] Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, [23] Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them: [24] The Lord bless you, and keep you; [25] The Lord make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you; [26] The Lord lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace. [27] So they shall invoke My name on the sons of Israel, and I then will bless them. 1

Principles 1. Blessing others is God s idea [22] Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, God was the one who instructed Moses to have Aaron (the high priest) and Aaron s sons (the priestly line) speak blessing into the lives of people. Moses didn t come up with the idea. The idea came from God. If it came from God, which it did, it is a good idea. It is something we need to do. We need to choose to bless others. 2. We are to bless those in God s family [23] Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them: The blessing wasn t for just anyone. It was for the nation of Israel those whom God had chosen for Himself. They were the ones under the old covenant with God. Today, Christians are under the new covenant with God. It wouldn t be right to walk up to a non-believer and invoke God s blessing on them. They might have a few choice words for you. Also, God isn t necessarily going to bless them with all His blessings until they come to Him and get saved. In Numbers 6:22-27 it was the priests who were to speak blessing into the lives of the people. Today as Christians the Bible indicates that every believer is part of a royal priesthood. 1 Peter 2:9 states, But you are a chosen race, a royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, a people for God's own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 2

3. Blessing needs to be spoken [23] Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them: We can pray that God will bless other people, and that s good. But it is powerful to say a blessing over people. Sometimes people are afraid to say a blessing to someone else but they shouldn t be. They just need to do it. It may sound strange at first, but it feels so good to get blessed. Hopefully as Aaron and his sons spoke blessing into the lives of the people, the people would get the idea to speak blessing into the lives of their children and each other. Jacob (Israel) gave us the example of speaking blessing into the lives of his children. 4. The Lord is the source of blessing [24] The Lord bless you, and keep you; [25] The Lord make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you; [26] The Lord lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace. Three times the name of the God is used. 1 st time three words. 2 nd time 5 words. 3 rd time 7 words. - The Lord bless you and keep you - The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you - The Lord lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace Only the Lord can give true spiritual blessings. Only the Lord can ultimately protect you. Only the Lord can pour out heavenly grace. Only the Lord can give the peace that passes understanding. James 1:17 states, Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow. 3

5. A spoken blessing has various elements [24] The Lord bless you, and keep you; [25] The Lord make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you; [26] The Lord lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace. a. Blessing and Keeping The Lord bless you and keep you general blessing and protection the word bless comes from a root word that means to kneel. It is like you are kneeling before God and asking Him to give a blessing to the person who you are with May the Lord give you a great day. The Lord guide and direct you today. The Lord bless you with wisdom. The Lord streamline your day and make things go well. The Lord give you favor with those with whom you work. The Lord allow you to be efficient today in the things you do. The Lord bless you with satisfaction in the things you do. The word keep means to put a hedge about (as with thorns) so that no one can harm you. It means to guard and attend to. A person might express this part of the blessing by saying, May the Lord protect you as you travel today. May He watch over you and protect you from mean people. May He guard your eye-gate so that you choose not to look at things you shouldn t look at. May He guard you from the schemes of evil people and the evil one b. Shining face and grace The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you A shining face is a happy face. What would make the Lord s face shine on a person? God s face would shine when that person is doing the things that please God. God s face would shine when that person is making decisions that are in line with God s will and standards. Just like when our own children do things that please us, our faces shine with an approving smile. So it is with God. The word gracious means to bend or stoop in kindness to an inferior. When the God of heaven who is all-powerful and all knowing, 4

bends in kindness to us, He often pours out on us His unmerited favor. That s what grace is. Because we are sinners, we will never be perfect this side of heaven. Even so, when God sees us genuinely trying to live for Him, He is more than willing to pour out His grace to us. He pours out blessings that we don t deserve. In this regard a person might say to the person he is blessing, May the Lord pour out His grace on you today. May He see that you truly are seeking Him, and may He show you His favor in all you do. May He bless all of your efforts today in a way that you see His grace truly at work. c. Lifted countenance and peace The Lord lift up His countenance on you and give you peace This is the idea that God will lift His eyes and turn toward you and look with approval. It is like He might have his focus on other things, but that He will turn toward you and smile. It is like the things we do would cause God to turn His face toward us. Are you a head-turner for God? The word for peace is shalom. It doesn t mean peace as opposed to war. It means inner peace even in the midst of struggle. 6. Invoking God s blessing will help bring His blessing [27] So they shall invoke My name on the sons of Israel, and I then will bless them. When you bless someone by invoking God s name, it encourages them to follow God more closely. The more closely they follow God, the more He will bless them. This blessing is not just for anyone, it was for the sons of Israel. It was for those under the old covenant. It was for those who claimed the name of the Lord as their God. So for us, we should speak blessing over those who claim the name of Christ, that they might be further encouraged to walk with Him. 5

Conclusion We all need to speak blessing into the lives of all who claim the name of Christ. We can speak blessing into the lives of our children as they go off to school. We can do it in the evening before they go to bed. We can speak blessing into the life of our spouse. We can speak blessing into the lives of others any time it is appropriate Perhaps we miss some of God s blessing because we fail to speak His blessing into each other s lives. Let s start speaking His blessing today. Numbers 6:22-27 [22] Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, [23] Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them: [24] The Lord bless you, and keep you; [25] The Lord make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you; [26] The Lord lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace. [27] So they shall invoke My name on the sons of Israel, and I then will bless them. 6
