Lesson 10 1 January, 2017 The Conflict of the Ages Lesson Scope: Revelation 12 and 13 Unless otherwise noted references in brackets relate to above chapters Lesson Focus The conflict of the ages began with Satan's initial rebellion against God. Following this, Satan attacked man, God's crowning work of Creation. After he succeeded in influencing man to fall, Satan attempted to thwart God's design for man's redemption. At Calvary, however, Christ dealt Satan a deathblow and made it possible for man to be victorious in the conflict. The opening verses of Revelation 12 reflect on Satan's opposition at the time of Christ's birth and then move to the end-time scene. Finally the Lamb will overcome the forces of evil, and Satan himself will be cast into the lake of fire. The conflict between God and Satan rages in the spirit world and upon earth. Knowing his time is short, the devil intensifies his efforts to damn men's souls and to destroy the work of the Almighty. After Satan's original rebellion, he attacked the first woman and man, and since then has accused the brethren day and night. Job is an example of one accused before God. Ever since Satan lost his position in heaven he has been venting his wrath on the woman and her faithful seed. But as seen in this lesson, God is stronger than Satan; He prepares a place in the wilderness for her for twelve hundred sixty days, or three and a half years (12:6, 14), and the earth helps the woman (12:16). Satan's use of deception is a significant facet of this lesson. The whole antichrist system mimics the true. In 12:9, Satan is identified as one "which deceiveth the whole world." Of the second beast it is said that he "deceiveth them that dwell on the earth" (13:14). The second beast is the same as the false prophet. (See 19:20.) Lesson Aim: To present principles concerning the conflict between God and Satan.

Theme Verse: Revelation 12:11. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Lesson Text Great Wonders Revelation 12:1-4 1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. 3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. Great War Revelation 12:7-11 7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Great Wrath Revelation 12:12-13 12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. 13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. Great Wickedness Revelation 13:1-18 1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. 2 And

the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. 3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. 4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. 9 If any man have an ear, let him hear. 10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. 11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. 15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. 16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Questions for Study Great Wonders 1. Why was the dragon so intent on destroying the Man-child? 2. What methods did Satan employ in his efforts to destroy Jesus? Great War 3. Discuss the outcome of the war in heaven. 4. What keys to victory enable the saints to overcome the dragon? Great Wrath 5. How does Satan's loss of access to heaven affect his activities on earth? Great Wickedness 6. What deceptive means do the dragon and the two beasts employ in this end-time conflict? 7. How is life made difficult for the saints during this time? 8. What aspects of the current world system might condition people to accept the system of the beast in the future? 9. How can we avoid deception in our day? Analyzing the Passage Revelation 12 records the great red dragon in conflict with the woman, the Man-child, and Michael and his angels. The "woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet... [wearing] a crown of twelve stars" (12:1) seems to represent Israel, through whom Christ came (Romans 9:5). The sun, moon, and stars remind us of the symbolism in Genesis 37:9, 10. The man child (12:13) is Christ. Satan tried to destroy Him as soon as He was born. He will rule all nations with a rod of iron (12:5). See also Psalm 2:7-9. The great red dragon is that old serpent, the devil, or Satan (12:9). The war in heaven and the casting out of Satan from heaven limits him to the earth. This brings rejoicing in heaven. In his wrath, Satan persecutes the woman and her seed with unparalleled fury, but God intervenes and Satan's efforts are limited. Chapter 13 describes the diabolical trinity and the development of the end-time antichrist system. The dragon, who gives the beast his power and authority, imitates God the Father. The beast whose deadly wound was healed mimics the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The mira-

cles and wonders of the second beast counterfeit the work of the Holy Spirit. This is a time of great deception because of the miraculous power of the second beast. Of particular interest is the mark of the beast and his control of buying and selling. And of special comfort are the angels who fly through the heavens, warning men not to receive the mark (14:8-10). This system will not take God's people by surprise. Those who receive this mark will experience God's wrath. Principles and Applications Great Wonders 1. The conflict between God and Satan involves the spiritual realm (12:3, 4). The conflict on earth is an extension of the conflict in heaven. Throughout the Scriptures we are given glimpses of this reality. For example, Satan's forces detained the heavenly messenger sent to Daniel (Daniel 10:12, 13). We, like Job, are oblivious to all that is happening behind the scenes. Satan is "the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience." 2. Since the Fall of Man, Satan's attacks have been aimed directly at God's redemptive purposes for mankind (12:3, 4). Pharaoh and Haman were two of Satan's agents who attempted to destroy the Jewish nation, through whom Christ would come. Herod tried to kill Jesus in infancy. Satan confronted Jesus with temptations to sin and circumvent the cross. To his own defeat he had Jesus crucified. Satan is still determined to crush God's work through persecution, deception, and apostasy. Great War 3. The outcome of the age-old conflict is certain (12:7, 8). Satan will succeed in deceiving many people. He may even kill those who refuse to serve him. However, he can never overthrow God or His angels, nor can he destroy the souls of those who trust in God. Rather, the saints overcome him by the blood of the Lamb (12:11). 4. Victory over Satan is possible because of Christ's work at Calvary (12:11). "There is power, power, wonder-working power / In the precious blood of the Lamb." To avail themselves of this power, the saints must "Be not... ashamed of the testimony of our Lord,... but be... partaker[s] of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God" (2 Timothy 1:8). This includes a verbal and living testimony of Christ's

work, even at the cost of death. Great Wrath 5. Michael's victory brings rejoicing in heaven but woe to the inhabiters of the earth (12:12). The devil being cast to the earth brings rejoicing in heaven because this is victory for God and His forces. However, this is but one battle in the ongoing conflict. Satan does not give up, but rather shifts his focus from Michael and his angels to the woman and the remnant of her seed who are obedient to God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. 6. Knowing that he has but a short time causes Satan to increase his.fury (12:12, 13). Satan was a murderous schemer from the beginning. (See John 8:44.) He will spare no effort in deception or destruction to accomplish his wicked purposes. To him, men are pawns to be sacrificed in a desperate effort against Almighty God. Great Wickedness 7. Satan intensifies his efforts by embodying himself in an end-time system and ruler (13:1, 3, 4). This system makes life very difficult for the saints. They are unable to buy or sell without the mark of the beast. They are persecuted and slain for believing the truth. It is a worldwide system; there is no country to which they can escape. It is Satan's day, but it will be brought to an end. 8. Satan's efforts are characterized by counterfeits, great wonders, and deception (13:3, 4, 11, 12). Through miracles and lying wonders, the unbelieving world is deceived into worshiping the beast and receiving his mark. Although Christ's miracles were proof of His deity, and miracles accompanied the apostles as evidence of their authority, miracles are not always proof that a man is sent by God. Satan cannot give men power to live in holiness. Righteousness and true holiness are companion signs of the true man of God. 9. The spiritually wise can detect and avoid end-time deception (13:18). Significantly, the prophetic Scriptures identify the beast by giving the number of his name. God is ever faithful to reveal truth to those who want to know. Jesus taught that a false prophet is detected by his life rather than by his message. "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them" (Matthew 7:20). The further we distance ourselves from the world, its evil, and its anti- God system, and the closer we walk with God, the keener will be our

perception of Satan's devices. Modem communications technology has the potential to connect us with the world in ways never imagined by previous generations. Not only its immorality but also its enticing social and advertising networks should cause us to take decisive action lest we become ensnared. Important Teachings 1. The conflict between God and Satan involves the spiritual realm (12:3, 4). 2. Since the Fall of Man, Satan's attacks have been aimed directly at God's redemptive purposes for mankind (12:3, 4). 3. The outcome of the age-old conflict is certain (12:7, 8). 4. Victory over Satan is possible because of Christ's work at Calvary (12:11). 5. Michael's victory brings rejoicing in heaven but woe to the inhabiters of the earth (12:12). 6. Knowing that he has but a short time causes Satan to increase his fury (12:12, 13). 7. Satan intensifies his efforts by embodying himself in an end-time system and ruler (13:1, 3, 4). 8. Satan's efforts are characterized by counterfeits, great wonders, and deception (13:3, 4, 11, 12). 9. The spiritually wise can detect and avoid end-time deception (13:18). 10. The beast is captivating in his person and universal in his authority (13:3, 4, 6-8). Answers to Questions 1. Why was the dragon so intent on destroying the Man-child? Satan had some idea of the purpose of the incarnation. This is seen in the temptations that Jesus faced in the wilderness and by the recognition that the demons gave Him when Jesus cast them out of the Gadarene demoniac (Luke 8:28). But there was a limit to Satan's understanding, or he would not have had Jesus crucified. If Satan could have, he would have spoiled the plan of redemption. 2. What methods did Satan employ in his efforts to destroy Jesus? Satan used Herod to try to kill Jesus in infancy. He tempted Jesus to sidestep the Father's will. He used the Jewish leaders to try to stone Him during

His ministry. He worked through the Jewish leaders and Pilate to have Jesus crucified. 3. Discuss the outcome of the war in heaven. The devil is not able to prevail against Michael and his angels, and the devil is cast out of heaven with his angels. There is rejoicing in heaven because the accuser of the brethren is cast down, and they overcome him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony even in the face of death. Woe is pronounced on the inhabiters of the earth and sea. The devil being cast down to the earth brings him one step closer to his eternal doom. 4. What keys to victory enable the saints to overcome the dragon? Foremost is the blood of Jesus that cleanses from sin; otherwise, they would experience God's wrath with the devil and his followers. Another key is the "word of their testimony." They are willing to acknowledge their allegiance to Christ, even if their witnessing brings death. Jesus said, "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it" (Mark 8:35). 5. How does Satan's loss of access to heaven affect his activities on earth? Satan intensifies his efforts because he knows that his time is short. In his wrath he seeks to persecute and destroy the woman and the remnant of her seed, "which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ" (12:13, 17). He goes about to establish his own kingdom on earth through the antichrist system. 6. What deceptive means do the dragon and the two beasts employ in this end-time conflict? Of particular interest is the counterfeit, diabolic trinity. The dragon imitates God the Father, the first beast mimics the work of Christ, and the second beast or false prophet counterfeits the work of the Holy Spirit. People will be very impressed with the words and power of the first beast. Special mention is made of his deadly wound that was healed. Even more deceiving is the miraculous power of the false prophet who gives life to the image of the beast and calls fire down from heaven as Elijah did. The false prophet or second beast seals his followers with a mark which mimics the seal of the Holy Spirit. 7. How is life made difficult for the saints during this time?

Life for the saints will be made very difficult because they will not be able to buy or sell without the mark of the beast. And to receive the mark would be an open denial of their faith. This unequal yoke will eclipse all others. Also, refusal to worship the image of the beast carries the death penalty. 8. What aspects of the current world system might condition people to accept the system of the beast in the future? Chief among forces in the world today is counterfeit religion, including "easy Christianity." By mixing ungodliness and error with religion, Satan deprives man of the life-changing power of true religion and thus prepares him to accept his counterfeits. We must beware of any religion or philosophy that minimizes the forsaking of sin and personal crossbearing. A multitude of unequal yokes in business and social life hold the potential to draw us into ungodliness. Satan is also intriguing many through the proliferation of technology. Fascination with the occult is also leading many into Satan's grip. 9. How can we avoid deception in our day? We avoid deception by knowing God's Word and living in obedience to it. Of special importance is separation from the world and the avoidance of the unequal yoke. It takes self-denial and a willingness to die for the faith. We must not be impressed by personal charisma or purported miracles, but instead emphasize righteousness and true holiness. We must be diligent and ready for the return of Christ. We pray to God for wisdom (13:18). Summarizing the Lesson The conflict between God and Satan has been raging since the beginning of time. This battle affects all mankind. Every man chooses allegiance to one side or the other. May we firmly choose God's way and avoid unwholesome relationships with the world. Only then can we be assured of being on God's side when this end-time scene unfolds in its final form and be counted worthy "to stand before the Son of man." Research Guide 1. Revelation 17:7-14 explains the seven heads and ten horns of the dragon and the first beast. 2. Daniel 7; 8:23-27; and chapter 12 contain parallel details and will add breadth to the lesson.
