August 26, 2018 8:30-10:45 AM Worship 14th Sunday after Pentecost Representing Christ as a Light within the City *Indicates where you may stand if you are able. **Four-digit hymns are from The Faith We Sing hymnal. THE CHURCH GATHERS PRELUDE For the Beauty of the Earth arr. Diane Bish Welcoming the Light of Christ into our midst WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (Please sign the welcome tablets, pass them across your pew and back to the outside aisle where they will be collected during the children s message.) *CALL TO WORSHIP based on Psalm 84 Come! Dwell in God s courts forever. Happy are those who live and pray in God s house. In God alone, our hearts sing for joy. In God alone, do we find strength. O Lord of hosts, how lovely is your dwelling place. We have come to worship the Lord. *HYMN OF PRAISE Stand Up, Stand up for Jesus No. 514 1

*OPENING PRAYER God of signs and wonders, who is your equal in heaven or on earth? Walk with us in faithful love, that we may know your ways and walk in the paths of righteousness. Clothe us with the belt of truth and the breastplate of justice, that our words may be true, and our actions may be just. Protect us with the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is your holy word, that we may spread your word of peace. Fill our lives with your presence as you filled Solomon s temple with your glory and power, that we may stand our ground during the times of trial. Amen. *THE PEACE In Christ, we are called to share the good news of God s peace. Let us live our calling as we share signs of peace with one another this day. *GLORIA PATRI No. 71 Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles Creed No. 881 CALL TO PRAYER Open My Eyes, That I May See (refrain) No. 454 Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God thy will to see. Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine! (You are invited to come forward and kneel or stand at the altar rail) PASTORAL PRAYER LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. TO HEAR THE WORD *HYMN OF INVITATION Onward, Christian Soldiers No. 575 (Children are invited to come forward during the last stanza.) CHILDREN S MESSAGE (10:45) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Since we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from your mouth, O God, make us hunger for this heavenly food, that it may nourish us today in the way of eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 2
