Hello and Welcome to First Grade, This is so exciting that you will be a part of the First Grade family this coming school year! I cannot wait to work together with you and your child. I know how hard your child has worked this year in Kindergarten and you are all ready for a much needed rest. The best part about getting ready for First Grade is just how easy it is! This packet will provide you with the tools you need to have a fun and exciting summer along with learning new things! Summer Reading: Flat Stanley: An Original Adventure by Jeff Brown Splat the Cat: Back to School Splat by Ron Scotton I ask that the children be familiar with both of these books when school begins so that we can discuss and review the different parts of each book! Summer Project: This year we are asking the First Graders, with the help of their parents, to write a friendly letter to me about their summer. If you go on any vacations or to any special place or places (even a park or zoo) throughout the summer, you are welcome to take a picture and include it in your friendly letter. It can be mailed to the school or passed in by the first Friday of the first week of school. At the end of this packet you will find a template for the friendly letter along with a coloring sheet of Flat Stanley that you can bring on your vacation. Your child can tell us where you took him! We have a special Flat Stanley map in our classroom and we would like to see all the different places he travels throughout the summer months. You can even include a photo of your child and Flat Stanley if you would like! It is just something simple to tell me whatever they would like to about who they are or what they have done throughout the summer. I cannot wait to get the letters and hear all about your child!!! Remainder of Summer Packet: Also included in this summer packet you will find a list of the Dolch Sight Words and a list of words from the Kindergarten Reading Program. Addition and Subtraction Tables, writing templates for printing practice, suggested websites, and First Grade prayers are also included. Transition to First Grade Ideas: To help your child have an easy transition into First Grade he/she is also asked to know the numbers 1-100, to know the correct formation of letters and numbers, have a good grasp on basic addition and subtraction facts, and know the sight words. Most of these items can be reviewed while driving in the car. Some fun car games could be rhyming games or finding the letters of the alphabet on highway signs. It is also recommended that frequent visits be made to your local library and that your child participate in some aspect of reading every day. Have a wonderful summer. I am looking forward to the next school year!!! God Bless, Mrs. Melanie Boswell
