St. Matthew Lutheran Church Herald 3rd Quarter 2014 Volume 8, Issue 3 Save the Date! The fun starts on Sunday, July 20 th and goes through Thursday, July 24 th! At Weird Animals VBS, kids discover that Jesus love is one of akind. Weird Animals is a habitat filled with incredible Biblelearning experiences kids see, hear, touch, and even taste! Team building games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the standout ac vi es that help faith flow into real life. Plus, we ll help kids discover how to see evidence of God in everyday life something we call God Sigh ngs. We will also par cipate in a hands on mission project, through a program called Water to Thrive, that will let the kids in our community show God s love by providing water for children in Africa.

Le er from the Editors To the members and friends of St. Matthew s, what a glorious past few months we have had at our church! The blessings we have experienced have been wonderful. The first was the amazing service to welcome the incredibly talented younger people into the church. The confirmands professing and sharing their faith journey is absolutely amazing. Each confirmand had a different experience and learning to share with us. Speaking in public is one the number one fear for many people but enabled by the Holy Spirit these young people shared their journey with us. Truly amazing!!! A few weeks later, Casey Garrett, gave a Temple Talk. In her Temple Talk, she shared her story re the outpouring of tender loving care (TLC) to her family and her son that day. Casey shared with her the many special gifts and comments that her son and her family received that day. Everything from material gifts to underlining the confirmands scripture by Pastor Mark. Her talk sent chills down my spine in terms of the love and personal attention that we pay to each other at St. Matthew s. We are truly blessed to have a wonderful, loving congregation. In closing, I am sharing an excerpt from a friend of mine s husband s blog regarding his wife s journey with cancer. I won t share names but the following is his comments this week when she completed her last treatment. Zero is: The nickname of a famous actor whose parents thought he would amount to nothing. The Scoville rating for bell peppers. The Celsius temperature when water freezes. AND The number of remaining infusions for _(enter name). Here is how to say the end in several languages: kraj, udgangen, end, eind, das ende, ang pagtatapos, loppuun, fin, fine, a végén, akhir, slutten, slutet, el extreme, a extremidade, nihai. Blessings to all and to the power of prayer. Until next issue.. Brenda Johnson and Lisa Hammel The MORE board, in conjunction with VBS, has adopted Water to Thrive as a Mission Project for St. Matthew. Water to Thrive may seem familiar to some of you. We have worked with and for them in the past. Here is a little information about them. WHAT IS WATER TO THRIVE? In 2007, a small bible study group in Austin, Texas wanted to help address the global water crisis. The members of the group decided to raise $5,000 enough money for one clean water well in Ethiopia. When they finished their fundraiser, they had collected enough money for TWELVE wells. WHAT IS THE MISSION? Water to Thrive is a faith-based, non profit dedicated to the mission of bringing clean, safe water to those who need it in rural Africa. They work with donors in the United States and implementing partners in Africa to bring lasting change. WHAT HAS ST. MATTHEW DONE? St. Matthew has partnered with the Houston Thrivent Chapter in the past to build a well in Tigray, Ethiopia in the district of Hintalo. The project serves useable water to a community of 565 members. Over the next year or so, the MORE board, and the VBS program will be sponsoring another full water project. For a full well we need to raise $5,000. Water to Thrive encourages full project sponsorship because full project sponsors receive photos and information about the location of the project and the number of people served, as well as the naming rights to the sign at your water point. But 100% of the money from any campaign that raises over $1,000 will go directly to water projects. 2

The Highlights of Paul s Journey Cruise The New Testament mentions places visited by St. Paul in his witness for Christ, including Ephesus, Corinth, Sardis, Troas, Troy, Rhodes, Laodicea, Hierapolis, Colossae and Athens. Consider this announcement your invitation to visit those places and also Istanbul, Turkey, in person by traveling with Dr. and Mrs. Jerry Kieschnick on The Highlights of Paul s Journeys, a special 11 day cruise October 31-November 10, 2014. For further information, contact Dr. Kieschnick at GBK@concordia.edu or 512.578.6035. By Brenda Johnson Undy Sunday Be a Part of It! As many of you know, one of the missions of St. Ma hew s is the Emergency Aid Coali on (EAC). Our congrega on does a great job of suppor ng EAC by making sandwiches every Sunday. One of the commodi es that EAC provides to the homeless and people in need is clothing. One piece of clothing that EAC cannot receive as donated or used items is underwear. They can only give people new underwear nothing used. (And in reality.. who really wanted used underwear?). During the month of September, St Ma hew would like to ins tute Undy Sunday. We would like the members and friends of St Ma hew to bring new underwear that we can give to EAC. Underwear includes men s briefs and boxers, women s underwear, bras, slips and children s underwear all sizes. I remember as a child during the month of August, my mother would take me school shopping and we would always get new underwear. As you do you school shopping in August, please pick up one or two packages of new underwear for the less fortunate! Bins will be provided. More informa on as we approach September. Thanks for all you do! 7
