Prayers of Faith Ronald L. Rushing, Th.D. Senior Teaching Pastor September, 2016 The fields were parched and brown from lack of rain, and the crops lay wilting from thirst. People were anxious and irritable as they searched the sky for any sign of relief. Days turned into arid weeks. No rain came. The ministers of the local churches called for an hour of prayer on the town square the following Saturday. They requested that everyone bring an object of faith for inspiration. At high noon on the appointed Saturday the townspeople turned out en masse, filling the square with anxious faces and hopeful hearts. The ministers were touched to see the variety of objects clutched in prayerful hands -Bibles, crosses, rosaries, etc. When the hour ended, as if on magical command, a soft rain began to fall. Cheers swept the crowd as they held their treasured objects high in gratitude and praise. From the middle of the crowd one faith symbol seemed to overshadow all the others. A small nine year old child had brought an umbrella. Faith and prayer go hand in hand. Jesus said if we have faith, we can move mountains through prayer. But we need to understand a few things about the relationship between faith and prayer. First, it is NOT a question of how much faith we have. Jesus said if we had the faith of a grain of mustard seed. This was the smallest seed known in His day. The point He was making is that it is not how much faith we have but where we place our faith (the object of our faith the One who is able to do what we believe). When we pray do we trust and have confidence that God is and that He rewards the diligent seeker of God? Second, it is NOT without limitations. Faith is not a crowbar to move God to our will. Faith is not the only condition by which a mountain moves. Faith is the ultimate expression of confidence in God s ability to DO as He wills. But it does not mean that God MUST do all that I desire. Faith is just ONE element involved in the total equation. Imagine that it is like a piece of apple pie. A piece of pie is not the whole pie. It is just part. To get the whole pie we have to put all the pieces together. Faith is just one piece of the pie. For instance, if we were to ask God to do that which violates His word, He is not going to do it just because we have faith! He will not violate His Word or His own character. So in one sense we can have all the faith in the world, but if God is not in it, then it will not be done. Faith trusts that God CAN do anything that He wills and trusts He will do what is right and good and lovely in His sight. Third, faith does NOT mean we can ignore our responsibilities. We can do more than pray but we can t do more than pray until we pray. Consider the actions of Abraham. He prayed for an heir then is told to offer up Isaac his son after God had answered. He did it because he believed God would raise him up from the dead. Faith looks beyond the emotions (imagine killing one s own son) involved and chooses to do as God directs. Faith means we trust God and do what He expects of us. Con't on page 3

NEW BIBLE STUDY MATERIALS The Armor of God Priscilla Shirer All day, every day, an invisible war rages around you. A cunning, devilish enemy seeks to wreak havoc on everything that matters to you -- your emotions, your mind, your family, your future -- by catching you unaware and unarmed. But when the enemy meets someone dressed for the occasion, he fails miserably. Join Priscilla Shirer in a Bible study that will challenge you to suit up, stand firm, and secure victory in your life. This Bible Study Kit includes one Bible study book and two DVDs with 7 video sessions, plus bonus features. 33 The Series This series builds upon timeless truths taught by Robert Lewis in the original Men's Fraternity curriculum but also includes new material on authentic manhood. The series is designed to inspire and equip men to pursue authentic manhood as modeled by Jesus Christ in His 33 years on earth. Each volume contains 1 DVD (6 sessions), Training Guide, and 1 DVD with Group Leader Resources. Volume 1: A Man and His Design explores the basic foundations of authentic manhood and God's clear design for men. Volume 2: A Man and His Story helps every man understand and come to grips with the defining moments and key relationships that have shaped his unique "story." Volume 3: A Man and His Traps challenges men to go beyond the surface, look deep within, and explore some areas that are easy to ignore but are critical in their journey. A Woman s Passionate Pursuit of God Karol Ladd As you explore Paul's intriguing letter to the Philippians with popular author and speaker Karol Ladd, you'll catch her passion and infectious enthusiasm. You'll learn to live intentionally as you face life's daily challenges...and you'll be helped to fall deeply in love with Jesus Christ, understand God's Word and His plans for your life, and say more and more, "Father, I want what You want." Perfect for a group Bible study or personal quiet times. (2 DVDs; six 30-minute sessions) A Woman s Secret for Confident Living Karol Ladd Author Karol Ladd shares powerful truths for every woman from Colossians. Karol presents compelling biblical principles and personal stories to show women the way to confidence in every aspect of life. Using the fun and memorable visual of different hats to present the themes, Karol shows how faith is the best accessory for a woman as she moves forward in her unique life and purpose. Ideal for individuals or groups (Six 30-minute sessions) Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus Nabeel Qureshi Building on the powerful story and arguments he shared in his book Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus, Nabeel Qureshi takes viewers deeper into apologetics and evangelism among Muslims. In eight 30-minute sessions he explores Muslim culture, the most common Muslim objections to Christianity, and the core doctrines upon which Islam stands or falls. Compassionate and clear, Nabeel s lectures will be a useful training tool for pastors, outreach leaders, adult classes, small groups, and any believers wanting to winsomely engage Muslims in spiritual conversations. The kit also includes a Study Guide by Qureshi with Kevin and Sherry Harney. Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild Mary Kassian Inundated by popular culture, many women have lost their bearings and no longer trust the internal compass that intuitively affirms those things that are good, true, and noble about womanhood. Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild will captivate, convict, and challenge women to become decreasingly worldly and increasingly godly, and it will equip them with truth for that journey as Kassian contrasts the wise woman from Proverbs 31 with the wild woman from Proverbs 7. The Girls Gone Wise Companion Guide contains lessons that correspond to each chapter of the book, with questions for personal reflection and application. The Girls Gone Wise DVD contains dozens of short, discussion-provoking video clips such as street interviews, testimonies, and table-talk with Kay Arthur. It also contains a printable leader's guide, a promo video, and graphics. 2

(Prayers of Faith continued from page 1) Any answer that we get is then a PRODUCT from God, not our own effort. However, we should be diligent in fulfilling our responsibility. Fourth, faith is NOT separate from God s revelation. God s will is shown through His Word. If it says no, it means no. It is like reading a sign that says thin ice. If we go out on the thin ice and fall in, then it shows we ignored God s Word and suffered the consequences for it. That explains some of what the Apostle James was describing when he said we ask and don t receive because we want it for our own lusts. It is the REVELATION of God, not the DESIRES of man that determines whether something is in God s will and ready for Him to deliver to those of faith. Fifth, faith does NOT believe everything it hears on the internet or reads in books or from the lips of mankind. Not everything that sounds true is true. There are lying spirits and lying people at work today that sound good. God is always true but people are not. Faith believes what God has specifically said in His Word and is able to discern truth from error. A person of faith does not trust everyone and everything. It discerns what is said in light of God s Word and God s character. It trusts in GOD and questions MAN. It is like the little poem that I recently read: Before you assume, learn the facts; before you judge, understand why; before you hurt someone, feel; before you speak, think. We should never doubt God. Pray, believing, and Jesus promises His answer. Faith can move mountains. Pastor Ron Before you assume, learn the facts; Before you judge, understand why; Before you hurt someone, feel; Before you speak, think. Parents sometimes move too quickly to give their children privileges that they can't sufficiently handle. Remember that the definition of "overindulgence" doesn't have to do with quantity. It has to do with giving children more than their character can handle. Privileges include: privacy staying home alone going to the mall alone facebook account Internet access cell phone going to a friend's house having friends over having money Responsibility is demonstrated by: honesty admitting mistakes instead of blaming or excusing reporting in, coming home on time anger control saying no to temptation when alone taking a stand for righteousness with friends completing a job without needing to be checked up on continually Giving a child his own phone isn't wrong but a child who is not responsible may have just received easier access to friends who are a bad influence. Unmonitored Internet access can be dangerous for some since there is a lot of bad stuff out there. Chat rooms and Facebook accounts require character or kids get into trouble. Allowing a teenage guy to go over to a girl's house when parents aren't home can be a problem. Teens may say, "You don't trust me." And the answer is, "Trust is something you earn by being responsible. It has to do with wisdom. Show me that you're responsible with checking in, doing your jobs around the house without being reminded, and taking a stand for righteousness when you're in a difficult situation; then we can talk about you having some of these privileges that you're requesting." As parents, we don't just expect a young child knows how to clean up her bedroom; she has to be taught and then checked up on. The same is true with being responsible. We can't just assume that a child knows how to withstand negative peer pressure. Children need to learn responsibility and as parents we need to teach it. It's similar to a young person learning how to swim. He or she is out there treading water and trying to learn to be a responsible, mature adult. Parents are on the boat tossing toys out to the child. Of course the kid loves the toys and then doesn't learn how to swim. Some parents give their children privileges before they're ready and in doing so, inadvertently contribute to their child's drowning. Honoring teens involves honest discussions about privilege and responsibility and coaching our young people toward success. This tip comes from the book Say Goodbye to Whining, Complaining, and Bad Attitudes in You and Your Kids by Dr Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN 4

Stephen Crabbe GO Team Chairman PRAYING FOR OUR EL CAMINO MISSIONARIES In Romans 5 the Apostle Paul speaks of his desire to go to Spain. And while he never got to go, a small team from El Camino will be going to the Friendship House in Madrid, Spain this October. This team consists of David and Grace Duran (Team Leaders), Arny Humble, Mark and Anna Scheuerman and their two children, Caleb and Sarah, Cheryl Alexander, Daniel Ford and Kelsey Wright. It will be an exciting time as our team will be primarily working with North African children but also developing relationships with other North African people who visit the Friendship House. As you are probably aware, there are many North Africans living in Spain who do not speak Spanish or understand the culture. At the Friendship House they can learn Spanish and have a place to connect with other North Africans and Spaniards in a friendly, caring environment. By our working alongside the Friendship House, North Africans will find the support and love they need to live and work in Spain. Please pray for the team as we go to share the love of Christ to people who may never have been around Christians and may have a distorted or even negative view of the Christian faith. Also, please pray for the many unspoken prayer requests that arise from the interaction of the two faith groups. May the Lord richly bless you as you pray for his people around the world! Dave Duran Vic McCauley Vic started attending ECBC in 1995 as a winter resident, along with his wife, Joann, who went home with Jesus January 8, 2008. Vic and Joann were married August 17, 1951 and had three daughters, 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Vic has one daughter, who with her husband and daughter, live in the Tucson area. After Joann s death, Vic moved here from Virginia in September 2010 to make Tucson his year-around home and ECBC his home church. Vic served in the US Navy for 26 years; eight years as enlisted and 18 as a Naval Flight Officer. He is a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam conflict." After retiring from the Navy, he worked 18 years as a civilian supporting Naval Air Systems Command Headquarters program managers and system engineers. He was director of Airborne Programs at his last company prior to fully retiring. Vic is in his sixth year as an Elder at ECBC, serving two years as Elder Board Chairman. He has also been Chairman of Congregation, Elder Board Chairman, Trustee Board Chairman, as well as teacher and college/career youth sponsor at McLean Bible Church, his Virginia home church for 25 years. Vic is presently El Camino's facilitator of the Newcomers' Class. 5
