He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Luke 4:18 19 (NKJ) It is the vision of Mt. Olive to be a church that is intentional in its efforts to identify and meet the needs of broken, hurt and oppressed people in the greater Glen Allen area through the message and ministry of Jesus Christ. From the Pastor's Desk Praise God for bringing us through the summer season. As we move into the fall season it is a good time to seek God for renewal and revival. I encourage you to realize that if we depend on God for everything we can endure anything. KINGDOMTIED August 28 November 26 (The pulpit attire is Green) 2 We are in the season of KINGDOMTIDE, the color of KINGDOMTIDE is GREEN. The color GREEN symbolizes growth. The cloths on the Communion table and podium are changed to coincide with each season of the Christian calendar. KINGDOMTIDE runs from August 24 until Advent. KINGDOMTIDE is the newest of the seasons, dating no farther back than the late 1930 s. KINGDOMTIDE gives place for due attention to the eternal presence of Christ and His Kingship with the parallel emphasis upon our stewardship. Its emphasis on the kingship of Christ and His kingdom, challenges us in our daily lives and in every area of our existence. General Theme For This Quarter: TRADITION AND WISDOM The study of this quarter is a survey of Old Testament wisdom literature, as well as an examination of Jesus teachings on wisdom. We hope that you will join us as we are focusing on: TEACHING AND LEARNING As is characteristic of wisdom literature, these books make little reference to covenant or religious life. Instead, they are focused on human wisdom and transmit lessons learned from experience and tradition. They are the words of a teacher to a student, or a parent to a child, words of wisdom passed on from one generation to another. The first five lessons draw on the wisdom collected by the writers of Proverbs. The next two lessons consider the wisdom of Ecclesiastes. The final lesson comes from the Song of Solomon. THIS WEEK S THE SUPERIORITY OF WISDOM Ecclesiastes 9:13 18 UNIT #1 The parable of a poor man who saved a town is shared as an example of quiet, thoughtful wisdom. Wisdom is greater than strength, and soft spoken wisdom is better than loud words of foolishness. NEXT WEEK S: October 16, 2011 WISDOM FOR AGING Ecclesiastes 11:9 12:7, 13 This lesson gives wisdom about aging. It is not only important to enjoy life while being young, but to remember that we belong to God, live in fear (reverence) of Him, and keep His commandments. CLASSES FOR EVERYONE!! MOBC HOW TO ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST INTO YOUR HEART Perhaps while reading the announcements you realized you have never made a Christian commitment. Don t delay that decision! We encourage you to embrace God s love today and receive the salvation that only Jesus Christ gives. Here are five simple steps you can take to find assurance of salvation. 1. Recognize your need. The Bible tell us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23) All of us are sinners, and we must admit our need for a Savior. 2. Repent of your sins. Our sins create a wall that separates us from God. By confessing our sins and turning from them, you will find forgiveness. The Bible promises: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). American Cancer Society Empowering men/women to make strides against breast cancer MOBC Healthcare Ministry OCTOBER IS MONTH ATTENTION MOUNT OLIVE, WE HAVE GROWN! TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS EXPECTED (LUKE 12:48) The Lord has blessed us with an abundance of youth in need of care and nurturing during worship and Bible Study. THE YOUTH MINISTRY IS IN NEED OF THE FOLLOWING: SUNDAY 11AM NURSERY ATTENDANTS: We will train you to attend to the children age1 5 during the worship service once per month. You will not be alone. Other Nursery workers will assist you. Please see Rev. Kelly or Adrienne Westbrook if you can assist. 5 3. Believe in Jesus. God sent His only Son to die so that He could pay for all our sins. Put your faith in Him and believe in His power to save you. The Bible says, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16). 4. Receive His salvation. God has given us a great gift in His Son, but we must receive His gift. Thank Him for loving and forgiving you, and ask Him to live in your heart. His promise to us is clear: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). 5. Confess your faith. The Bible assures us: If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:9). You have been born again and are now part of God s family. Tell someone else what Jesus has done in your life! WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY YOUTH WORKERS: We will train you to assist in conducting age appropriate Bible Study lessons, including contemporary non traditional presentations to assist youth in applying The Word to their every day life. Youth Bible Study meets most Wednesdays at 7 8pm. You can select which Wednesday per month you would like to teach. Please see Rev. Kelly or Carolyn Debnam if you can assist. You did not choose me but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit; fruit that will last. John 15:16 Church School Teachers Needed! Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs. 22:6 Can you commit to one hour on Sunday Mornings? If you can, Church School is in need of three teachers to teach our Primary and Junior students. First timers, as well as seasoned teachers will appreciate the user friendly teacher guide that makes teaching fun and easy.
