England & Scotland The Great Awakening Tour Saturday, August 22, 2009 London We are greeted upon arrival in London and enjoy lunch aboard our motor coach during an orientation tour of this lively and historical city. We see the highlights of London including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament. (London, 3 nights) L/D Sunday, August 23, 2009 London This morning we attend church at Wesley s Chapel. After service we enjoy fellowship and lunch and then a guided tour of the Museum of Methodism, Wesley s Home and his gravesite. John Wesley was the founder of the Methodist Church and has been called the most influential Protestant leader since the Reformation. We also visit Bunhill Fields Cemetery, where Wesley s mother, Susanna, and many other influential Christians are buried. Our final stop will be at Aldersgate Street to see the Aldersgate Memorial, commemorating the place where Wesley experienced his conversion in 1738. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to explore more of London. Tonight, you may choose to enjoy a theatrical production in London s famous theater district. B/L Monday, August 24, 2009 London We begin this morning with a visit to the magnificent Westminster Abbey. The rest of the day is yours to discover more of this fascinating city. You may choose to cruise the Thames River on your way to the Tower of London to see the exquisite Crown Jewels, visit outstanding museums, or spend the afternoon shopping. B Tuesday, August 25, 2009 Bath This morning we get an early start for Oxford a city rich in Christian history. Much of today is devoted to the sights of the beloved Christian author C.S. Lewis. We begin by visiting Lewis former home, the Kilns (if available). We visit Holy Trinity Church, where he s buried, and break for lunch at The Eagle and Child Pub, where Lewis had many discussions with his group The Inklings. Our tour also includes Magdalen College, where he taught for nearly thirty years. Our tour of Oxford concludes with a visit to Christ Church College and Cathedral, where both John and Charles Wesley studied. Late in the afternoon we continue on to the regal city of Bath. On our way we stop at Stonehenge to visit this amazing ancient sight. (Bath, 2 nights) B/D Wednesday, August 26, 2009 Bath Bath is graced with magnificent Georgian architecture, elegant shops, and lovely cafes all of which we enjoy on our walking tour this morning. We also visit the Roman Baths and Museum for which the city is famous along with the Pump Room. After lunch, the rest of the day is yours to explore this beautiful city on your own. B Thursday, August 27, 2009 Gloucester This morning we head to Bristol a center of evangelical Christianity during the 18th and 19th centuries. We visit John Wesley s Chapel called The New Room, which is the oldest Methodist meeting house in Britain. The chapel is now a fascinating museum. Our next stop is Charles Wesley s House, where he wrote some of his 7,000 hymns. This afternoon we drive to Gloucester where the fiery George Whitefield was born and later began to preach. When he was 22 years old, Whitefield was the foremost figure in a religious movement called the Great Awakening bringing a spiritual rebirth across Britain and the American colonies. We visit St. Mary de Crypt Church, where Whitefield was baptized and later preached his first sermon. We also visit Gloucester Cathedral an architectural gem and the place where this great preacher was ordained into the ministry. We have dinner together at The Bell Inn Restaurant, the birthplace of Whitefield. (Gloucester, 1 night) B/D Friday, August 28, 2009 York This morning we drive through the heart of England to the ancient city of York. We arrive in time for lunch. In the afternoon we take a walking tour that introduces us to the city s Christian heritage. The largest medieval cathedral in Northern Europe York Minster is our first stop. We visit Clifford s Tower, a site of pilgrimage for Jewish visitors; then walk through the Shambles and along a portion of the ancient walls that enclose the old city. (York, 1 night) B/D

August 22-September 1, 2009 Saturday, August 29, 2009 Edinburgh This morning we visit one of the best-preserved segments of the 1,800 year-old Hadrian s Wall. The wall was built by the Romans when England was part of their empire. It was to prevent military raids by tribes living in what is now Scotland. Visit Housesteads Fort Museum before continuing on to the beautiful capital city of Edinburgh, Scotland to visit one of the most famous castles in all of Britain Edinburgh Castle. (Edinburgh, 3 nights) B/D Sunday, August 30, 2009 Edinburgh Today is devoted to Edinburgh s Reformation history. We visit St. Giles Church it was from this pulpit that John Knox (1514-1572) spent most of his Reformation years preaching. At the time, no country in Europe had greater religious corruption than Scotland. The nation was transformed through Bible preaching, particularly by three courageous men Patrick Hamilton, George Wishart and John Knox. Later, we visit the John Knox House and Holyrood Palace the Queen s official Scottish residence. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to explore one of Europe s most lovely cities. Enjoy shopping or visiting some of the best museums in Great Britain. B Monday, August 31, 2009 Edinburgh After breakfast we drive to the fringes of the Scottish Highlands to Stirling to visit its magnificent castle. Stirling Castle dominated Scottish history for centuries and now remains one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in the country. We continue enjoying beautiful scenery as we travel into the lowlands and visit the bonny banks of Loch Lomond. We see Aberfoyle and Bannockburn (site of Robert Bruce s victory in 1314) before we head back to Edinburgh. This evening we have our farewell dinner and a time of reflection on the tremendous impact the great revivalist preachers had on Britain and ultimately our own great nation.
