It is seen by historians and theologians as the birth of the church. This account is found in the book of Acts. The disciples were huddled in the upper room. Jesus appeared to them, greeted them, sent them out and gave them the Holy Spirit. By receiving the Holy Spirit we have everything we need to live out the abundant life that God gives to us. We have the forgiveness of sins. We are adopted by God as His sons and daughters, and we have God s life giving presence and power in our lives. Many people look at the condition of the church today and wonder why we don t see more evidence of the Holy Spirit, if we are all filled with the Spirit. Where is the healing, the prophesying, and the casting out of demons? At least part of the problem has to do with what we, as modern day Disciples believe is the purpose of the church. Too many believe that the church, and God, is just here to serve. The church is here so that we can regain our strength and get through another week. We believe that the church is here to teach our children the Christian faith in an entertaining and enjoyable manner. The church counsels us, comforts us, joins us together as husband and wife, and lays us to rest.
Page 2 Mission Related Church Cont. Of course, the church does do these things, but if this is the breadth and depth of our Christian experience, we certainly wouldn t need the Holy Spirit. If we are in the church only for ourselves we are in for the wrong reason. The Spirit was given to the church for mission. Jesus sent the disciples out before he gave them the Spirit. In Acts the disciples were commissioned to be His witnesses to the ends of the world before they received the Spirit. When we are about mission we experience the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in a mighty way. To be involved in mission requires a change in our perspective on life. We reject the world s teaching that life is about more and bigger. To be involved in mission challenges us to change our focus from ourselves to others. God has blessed us so that we can be a blessing. To be involved in mission invites us to let go, lose control, and let God. God beckons us to trust him to believe that God is in control of our lives so that we don t need to be, and that the Holy Spirit will guide us along the very best path for us. When we are involved in mission, the Spirit will be evident by giving us the opportunity and the ability to proclaim the gospel, and will touch the lives of those around us. God is calling each and every one of us to a ministry. God is inviting us to let go and behold his power in our lives, and in our congregation.
Page 3 Remembering Elric When Deacon Vernon Elric Green passed from labor to reward on May 14th, we bid farewell not only to a deacon, but also a man of vast qualities. For some, we did not realize the full scope of the loss until his home going service and had an opportunity to hear about El in a new light. We heard of him as a lifelong friend, a role model, a church and community member, a company man, a family man, and a man who simply loved God and demonstrated that love through his actions. We all have been the recipient of that biting sarcasm that was his signature trademark. That dry wit would catch you unprepared, and honestly, a bit offended the first few times. Then you learned to brace yourself for impact. Eventually, you recognized there was a message in the zinger. If you took the time to listen, often El was dispensing a message that was for your good. That humor was the packaging that encased cryptic proverbs designed to help you see things as they were. They were unvarnished pearls of truth, often loving rebukes, gift wrapped in El s special way. In truth, that exceptionally dry humor cloaked his compassion, warmth, dedication to justice, and enthusiastic love for the word of God. He was passionate about a number of ministries and left his trademark of love on every one of them. We were especially blessed to have him as a member of the Diaconate where he was positioned to minister to his fellow deacons, the Shiloh New Site family and the surrounding communities. He was a member of many families, some biological, academic, occupational, or congregational in nature, but all spiritual in essence. Those diverse families are better from having had El as a member. We will miss Elric and we will hold fond, loving memories of his zealous love for God and compassionate love for all men for the rest of our lifetimes. In the end, that is the greatest epitaph of all, to which we all aspire to be known for our love (John 13:34-35). Nathaniel Harley, Jr. Chairman, The Diaconate

Page 5 Annual Church Picnic The Shiloh Baptist Church New Site annual church picnic was held on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Loriella Park. There was tons of fun and games for Adults and children of all ages. The Recreation Ministry provided games like Bingo, Connect4, and Uno pass the time; while some of the children took the opportunity to cool off in the swimming. The Men s Ministry teamed up with the Culinary Arts Ministry to cook and serve a great meal, there was plenty of good and fellowshipping from beginning to end. Page 7 Vacation Bible School On June 26 30, 2017, Shiloh Baptist Church New Site held its annual vacation bible school. This year s theme for vacation bible school was Galactic Starveyors. The youth attendees spent the week searching the visible to discover the invisible, while examining God s word. They discovered that the God of the universe wants a relationship with them. They also had the opportunity to enjoy in crafts, music and recreation while praising the lord. Each attendee was provided a Galactic Starveyors t-shirt as a keepsake. On Friday, June 30th during the closing ceremony there was a special balloon launch that every attendee had the opportunity to participate in. Special thanks to Carolyn Oglesby for serving as the vacation bible school coordinator once again. Also thanks to all who attended and for all the ministries involved in making the 2017 vacation bible school a success. Carolyn Oglesby, VBS Coordinator Shines like the Stars!!! Page 9 Douglas and Gale Jones, Coordinators of the Barbara Carroll Community Outreach and Development Corporation, Honored for Community Service The Barbara Carroll Community Outreach and Development Corporation Families and individuals in our community go without food due to a variety of factors in their lives such as unemployment, low income, family dynamics, illness, losing a job, etc. As all of us are susceptible to hard times, Barbara Carroll Community Outreach and Development Corporation (BCCO&DC) is there to help. Shiloh Baptist Church New Site began a program to help needy families in the area by providing food for those who could not afford to purchase it. A few years later the program added a Healthcare Ministry to help those who could not afford to see a doctor but needed some form of early detection for various diseases. These programs grew to the point where the church could no longer handle them, but it wanted to continue providing these services. The church began to explore the possibility of establishing a non-profit corporation to take over its Healthcare and Assistance Programs. After several informational presentations, the membership voted to proceed with the project. The BCCO&DC which is a 501(c)3 was organized in 2004 and began operating in January 2005 for the purpose of serving the diverse needs of those individuals in Planning District 16 which includes the City of Fredericksburg, the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford who require assistance in meeting their day-to-day needs. In partnership with the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank, BCCO&DC is a USDA approved program which is governed by the rules and regulations of the Second Harvest Program. Under this partnership, BCCO&DC
Page 10 focus on ensuring that food assistance is provided to those who meet the program eligibility requirements. In 2006, the BCCO&DC partnered with the Marines as part of the Toys for Tots program but found that the age group was primary for newborn to eleven years old. It was determined later that there were many children over the age of eleven who deserved Christmas as well. During that time Christmas for Teens was organized to provide Christmas to any child who is enrolled in school. To make this broader effort possible, BCCO&DC partnered with other community organizations and Shiloh Baptist Church New Site for donations. Over the years BCCO&DC has assisted thousands of children through the Toys for Tots program. The corporation plans to develop more programs in the future to help meet the needs of the community in such areas as food safety, nutrition, health (benefits and services), and finance. Effective October 2014, Douglas and Gale Jones began serving as Coordinators of BCCO&DC. They are currently being assisted by the volunteer services of the following members of Shiloh Baptist Church New Site: Mae Arter, Audrey Douglas, Carole Hamm, Paulette Hawthorne, Lucille Jackson, Mary Mercer, Patricia Parker, Betty and William Wilson. The pantry is located on 210 Wolfe Street, Fredericksburg, VA next to the church s parsonage. Operating hours are 10:00 A.M. 12:00 P.M. on the 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th Tuesdays of each month. The agency contact number is 540-538-9365, and the mailing address is P.O. Box 102, Fredericksburg, VA 22404. BCCO&DC is currently funded through a line-item in the church s budget and other fundraising efforts. Tax-deductible contributions and non-perishable food items can be donated to the agency and given to one of the coordinators at any time.

Left Behind is the bestselling series of 16 fictional books by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye based on the book of Revelation and the end times. In this fast pace story, in spite of all they endure, the Christians remain steadfast in their faith. The Kids version is the same as the adults, except from the point of view of four young teenagers, Judd, Vicki, Lionel, and Ryan. As the world crumbles around them, they stick together in faith to fight the evil forces. Each book s ending flows right into the next with non-stop action. Recommended for ages 10 and up.
