Supernatural On Earth as it is in Heaven Jesus ministry was characterized by supernatural miracles from beginning to end. He taught with power and authority that was beyond what anyone had heard before. He healed the sick. He cast out demons. He had power over nature and He provided for people in miraculous ways. When Jesus sent His first followers out to continue His ministry, He gave them power and authority to do what He had been doing. Jesus displayed the extent of His supernatural power when He overcame death and was raised to life after 3 days in a tomb. He defeated the power of sin and death once and for all and He has been given all authority in heaven and on earth from His Father. There is nothing beyond the power of Jesus and no one above the authority of Jesus. He is a King with all power and authority in heaven and on earth. When we submit our lives to King Jesus, the will of God is done here on earth as it is in heaven. Your Kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven Matthew 6:9-10 At Gateway, one of our values is to be, Supernaturally Down to Earth. We believe that the supernatural power of God is available for everyone today through faith in Jesus. God is calling us to a lifestyle where we expect Him to work supernaturally through us as he did through Jesus first followers in the New Testament Church. During this series, we will identify some of the common hindrances to walking in the supernatural power of God living in religion rather than relationship; expecting little rather than exercising authority; walking in fear rather than faith; trusting our rational mind rather than the revelation of God; focusing on our poverty rather than God s generosity. This series will both educate us about the supernatural worldview of Jesus and demonstrate the power and authority of Jesus, given to His followers. I pray that we will all expect God to do more through our lives and ministry than we have ever seen before. 3

Supernatural Prayer This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6: 9-10) In the midst of Jesus ministry, He regularly escaped from the noise of the crowds to a mountain to pray to His Father. He listened to what His Father was telling Him to do and He returned to minister to the people in supernatural power. His first followers saw the powerful impact of Jesus prayers and they wanted to know how to pray in the same way that He did. So Jesus taught them what has become known as the Lord s Prayer. Jesus prayer was personal (Daddy God); worshipful (Holy is your name) and it was powerful (bring your power from heaven to earth). He says, don t pray like religious people who will receive no reward from the Father, but enter into intimate relationship with God and be rewarded by God. One of the hindrances to the supernatural is living out of religion rather than relationship. In the midst of the noisy crowds our ears hear voices in the natural world all around us that we respond to every moment of every day. In the midst of the noise of the natural world, Jesus could hear the voice of His Father in heaven. As He responded by faith to the voice of His Father, miracles happened. The Father continues to speak to us today in supernatural ways through His Word and the Spirit. As we listen to the Father s voice and respond in faith, miracles will follow. There will be intimacy with our Father in heaven. Jesus models how to listen to our Father s voice on earth. 4

Supernatural Power When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick (Luke 9:1-2) In Luke 8, Jesus has been going throughout the villages preaching the good news, healing the sick and casting out demons. He then gives the same power and authority to 12 ordinary blokes to do the same thing. Often those who have great power hoard it for themselves, but Jesus, in seeking to build the Church delegated His power so that others could share in His ministry. When we put our faith in Christ, we receive His authority over the power of sin in the world. Jesus expects us to exercise His authority as we proclaim the power of His Gospel. One of the hindrances to the supernatural is when we expect little rather than exercising his authority. There is no sign of sin in heaven. Jesus gives us authority to destroy the power of sin on Earth. 8

LIFE GROUP DISCUSION CELEBRATE Share how you experienced the supernatural as you listened to God s voice? MEDITATE Share what God has taught you this week as you have meditated on scripture. Supernatural Encounter As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. Who touched me? Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you. But Jesus said, Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me. Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace. Divine encounters happened throughout the ministry of Jesus. When his followers thought they were going somewhere to do something important they found that Jesus noticed people that were seemingly unimportant to everyone else but supremely important to Him. Jesus disciples did not notice the woman that had touched him. Their mind was focused on the task at hand and Jesus question didn t make any sense to their rational mind. One of the hindrances to the supernatural power of God is when we live out of the rational mind rather than the revelation of God. Jesus ministered to people on the way because at the end of the day, it is people that matter to God. There are people that we live work and laugh with that are lonely and hurting like the woman that Jesus encountered on the way. He wants to heal their pain and welcome them into loving community just like this woman. As you go on your way to do important tasks, God has divine encounters lined up for you, if you will notice the people that matter to Him and respond to the prompt of His Spirit to minister His love to them. I pray that we would all notice someone in the crowd this week who needs a touch from Jesus in their lives. There is no loneliness in heaven. Jesus calls us to notice the lonely and welcome them into loving community. 12

Supernatural Provision Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over (Luke 9:16-17). The only miracle other than the resurrection of Jesus that is included in all 4 Gospels is the feeding of the 5000. This is a miracle of supernatural provision. When all they had in their hands to feed 5000 people was 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish, Jesus asks His Father to bless what has been given and as the disciples hand it out, it is multiplied to be enough to meet the needs of all the people. One of the hindrances to the supernatural power of God is when we focus on the poverty around us rather than the generosity of God. We too will see miraculous provision when we give what God has given us to meet the needs of people living in spiritual and physical poverty. On Sunday 26 August the whole Gateway family will have an opportunity to give a generous gift to alleviate spiritual and physical poverty in our communities in the years to come. There is no poverty in heaven. Jesus calls us to give generously to diminish spiritual and physical poverty on earth. 16

Supernatural Faith When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. It s a ghost, they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: Take courage! It is I. Don t be afraid. Lord, if it s you, Peter replied, tell me to come to you on the water. Come, he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, Lord, save me! Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. You of little faith, he said, why did you doubt? In Matthew 8, Jesus demonstrates His supernatural power over nature. While He is asleep in the boat Jesus rebukes the disciples for having little faith when the waves crash against the boat and they fear for their life. Their fear of the storm deafened their faith in God. Jesus then commands the wind and the waves to be still and they obey his command. In Matthew 14, Jesus gives the same command to go to the other side of the lake but this time He doesn t go with them. When Jesus walks on the water next to them, Peter says, Command me to come Lord. Peter is learning that the power of God is displayed in obedience to His command. Once again Peter s fear of the water deafened his faith in Jesus command and he began to sink. One of the hindrances to the supernatural power of God are our fears that deafen our faith. Jesus commands us to come join Him in His Kingdom; come join Him in His place of victory and authority over our greatest fears; come learn His perspectives of faith and power. When we respond obediently to the command of Jesus, the supernatural power of God is displayed to bring healing for our body, mind and Spirit and freedom from our fears. There is no fear in heaven. Jesus calls us to walk by faith in His voice on the earth. 20

LIFE GROUP DISCUSION CELEBRATE Share how you experienced the supernatural power of God to defeat sin this week. MEDITATE Share what God has taught you this week as you have meditated on scripture. EDUCATE Read Matthew 14:22-33 1. In times of trouble or anxiety, how do you respond to fear? Can you relate to the disciples in this story? 2. What does Jesus posture and response tell us about Him and us? 3. Was Peter wise or foolish in stepping out? Can you relate to Peter? 4. How does fear hold you from taking steps of faith? DEMONSTRATE What is fear holding you back from? Take a step of faith this week. Is God asking you to get baptised, invite a neighbour over or have lunch with a colleague? Pray for one another. ACTIVATE What is the step of faith that Jesus is commanding you to take? FAMILY Family CHAT chat for kids & youth Fear can stop us from taking opportunities when they come along. Read Matthew 8.
