Ph: 2434 9236, 2431 3937, 2435 6475 mambalamtimes@yahoo.co.in Web: www.mambalamtimes.in LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Don t convert Pondy Bazaar into pedestrian plaza Sir, I am totally against Pondy Bazaar being closed for vehicular traffic and being converted into a Pedestrian Plaza under the Smart City project.. A few years back, a similar futile change was done in South Usman Road, from Panagal Park end to the bus terminus.. Swarms of people covered this stretch, causing serious handicap to vehicles. It was given up after some months.. Roadside hawkers were evicted and given space in a commercial complex to free the pavements for exclusive use by pedestrians and also to widen the road to make way for parallel parking on one side. Though the hawkers were relocated, no further steps were taken to widen the road or repair the damaged pavements. Many shops still encroach on the pavement with no action being taken by the authorities concerned. Pondy Bazaar is a major thoroughfare with heavy traffic. It connects Anna Salai with many other important roads in the neighbourhood. If it is made a pedestrian only road, how will the existing traffic be diverted without causing traffic snarls? Are members of the public, especially the elderly, expected to lug their purchases all the way to a boarding point? Big shops and hotels are worried that they will lose business. What about school children: which roads will they use, where will they be dropped? I suggest Chennai Corporation build a multi-level parking lot instead of closing important roads to vehicles. S. Sundar, T. Nagar, Ph: 98402 30054 Improvements sought in bus terminus Sir, T. Nagar bus terminus is one of the busiest in the city. It is also located at one of the busiest junctions and often, during peak hours, both commuters and bus drivers face a tough time. For drivers taking the buses in and out of the terminus is a big ordeal. Though there is a public announcement system in place, often it is confusing for the commuters to locate their buses as they are parked in a haphazard fashion. Installation of digital boards showing departure time and destination will be helpful. I also request MTC to increase the seating facility for commuters as it can help a number of aged persons. The urinals are not maintained in a hygienic condition which puts the health of the staff and commuters at great risk. I appeal to MTC to improve the infrastructure in T. Nagar bus terminus. V. S. Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar
