3 Prophet Hosea October 17 The holy Prophet Hosea is the first of the minor prophets, belonging to the tribe of Issachar. He lived during the ninth century before Christ, in the kingdom of Israel. He was a contemporary of the holy Prophets Isaiah, Micah, and Amos. During this time, many of his fellow Israelites had forgotten the true God, and worshipped idols. The holy Prophet Hosea attempted to turn them again to the faith of their Fathers by his wise counsels. Denouncing the iniquities of the people of Israel (i.e. the northern kingdom of Israel), the prophet proclaimed to them great misfortunes from a foreign people and their removal into captivity by Assyria. Almost a thousand years before the coming of the Savior, and through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the prophet foretold the end of sacrificial offerings and of the priesthood of Aaron (Hos. 3:4-5), and that the knowledge of the True God would spread through all the earth (Hos. 2:20-23). Hosea spoke also about Christ, how He would return from out of Egypt (Hos. 11:1; compare Mt. 2:15), that He would be resurrected on the third day (Hos. 6 and especially Hos.6:2; compare with 1 Cor 15:4), and that He would conquer death (Hos. 13-14. Compare 1 Cor 15:54-55). The prophesies of St. Hosea are included in the book that bears his name. The prophetic service of St. Hosea continued for more than sixty years. The God-inspired prophet died in deep old age, having devoted all his life to fulfilling the will of God. Kontakion (Tone 4) of Prophet Hosea: Illumined by the Spirit, thy heart was a vessel of illustrious prophecy, seeing far-off things as though they were present. Therefore, we venerate thee, O glorious Prophet Hosea.
4 St. Tabitha October 25 St. Tabitha, who was raised from the dead by the Apostle Peter: She was always doing good works and acts of charity. In this way, Luke the Evangelist praises St. Tabitha. The name Tabitha is Syriac and in Greek is translated as Dorcas, which means deer. Such was the name of this most pious and philanthropic woman, who lived in Joppa. In the Acts of the Apostles (9:36-43) we are informed that Tabitha specialized as a weaver and manufactured tunics and garments, which she would sell and from these proceeds she supported the poor, widows, and orphans. While the Apostle Peter was out spreading the gospel, he arrived at Lydda in Palestine, and it happened that Tabitha fell ill and died. And though she was ready for burial, it became known that Peter was in Lydda. Then two were sent to plead with Peter to come to Joppa. When he arrived he went upstairs to the room in which they kept the body of Tabitha. Peter was moved, and without saying anything, after sending everyone outside the room, he knelt and prayed fervently. Then he said, Tabitha, arise. And indeed the dead woman resurrected! This was received with immense joy by all those in attendance, and news of the event spread throughout Joppa, which led many to believe in Christ. After this Tabitha lived many years, always doing good works and acts of charity. Death found her again in old age. And so this benevolent woman departed in peace and with joy, because God made her worthy to live beneficially full of good spiritual fruits. Troparion (Tone 1) of St. Tabitha: With the flow of the many streamed river of almsgiving, thou watered the dry earth of the needy. Showering alms on the widows and the poor, thou shone with the light of your works and were radiant with grace, O Tabitha. Glory to Christ who loves thee! Glory to Christ who has blessed thee! Glory to Christ whom thou followed as a true disciple and a spotless lamb!
