Epistle Reading St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19. Brethren, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. English Reader: Lewie Dolmas Gospel Reading Luke 8:26-39 At that time, as Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, there met him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to 3

depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him. Football in the fall. Basketball and Hockey in the winter and Baseball, spring and summer. The pastor has been an avid sports fan all his life. But he s had it! He s quitting this sports business once and for all. You ll never get him near one of those stadiums or arenas again. Want to know why? 1. Every time he went they asked him for money. 2. The people whom he sat beside didn t seem very friendly. 3. The seats were too hard and not comfortable at all. 4. He went to many games but the coaches of those teams never came by to visit him at his home or business to ask his opinion of things. 5. The referee made some decisions that he just couldn t agree with. 6. He suspected that he was sitting with some hypocrites as they seemed to be more concerned what others were wearing rather than watching the game. 7. Some games went into overtime and he was late getting home. 8. The band played some songs that he wasn t familiar with. 9. It seems that they always scheduled games when he wanted to do other things. 10. He was taken to too many games by his parents when he was growing up. 11. He recently read a book that really explained sports and now he feels that he knows more than the coaches do. 12. He doesn t want to take his children to any games because he wants to let them choose for themselves what sport they like best, if any! The irony of this story is that our excuses of why we don t support our church are ridiculous. When you consider the sacrifice that God gave to us as a gift, the suffering and death of His own son here on earth so that we can all enjoy Eternal Life, is a priceless gift that is unmatched. Sure, the church DOES need your financial support to continue to prosper and grow. Yes, based on our membership, our home needs approximately $1,200 per family each year to operate. While some may feel that $100 per month, per family, is WAY TOO MUCH to pay to church. Ask yourself these questions: Pastor Quits Sports by Arthur Nahatis How much do we spend on an average for our monthly TV cable bill? 19

(continued from previous page) It all adds up. Newspaper Subscriptions? Golf Green fees? If we smoke, don t we spend considerably more each month for smokes than we do to support our House of God? How about those terrific coffees at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts? Happy Hour once a week or more? Friends, it s not a question of CAN we afford it, it s a question of CAN we afford NOT TOO? While we are talking about sports, many of us would gladly spend $350-$500 just to attend one Cowboys game with a friend or family member and no one seems to care that a soda costs $4.75 and a beer as much as $11. So many still only put a dollar into the collection basket each week as you have been doing since the 60 s. That s when $3,000 would by a Brand New Corvette. Today a corvette cost approximately $50,000+. Many are still proudly putting in that $1 bill each week when inflation tells us that we should be putting in at least a $10 bill. Same thing with our stewardship, many of us CAN afford $1,200 a year, ($100 per month or $3 a day), which if done faithfully would cover all of our operating expenses here at Holy Trinity. If we could make monthly payments to insure better health, how much would we gladly pay each month? That s priceless, isn t it? So isn t Eternal Life that God promises based on our faith, just as important if not even more so? It sure is to me! No one is asking you to Quit Sports however let s all join God s Team at Holy Trinity and do our part to insure the teachings and beliefs of our Mother Church through tithing and supporting all of our various ministries. Not as a simple spectator but as a happy, contributing member doing our part each and every month. You ll be glad you did! FOR ETERNITY! Respectfully, Arthur Nahatis
