Prayer Line: Jo Kusz 651-771-7438 From the Director of Family Faith Formation & Youth Ministry Growing up I had an amazing Youth Minister. Sometimes I thought he was amazing, anyway. Sometimes I couldn t stand him. He had a way of constantly knocking at the door of my heart like an Avon lady of the past; only instead of saying Avon calling!, he would tell garrulous jokes followed with no seriously, give your life to Jesus. He singled me out. While focusing on so many others, he still singled me out. Jess, he would say. Dude. Seriously, just. Give your life to Jesus. What s holding you back? What s holding you back? I was 13 when Mr. Awesome Youth Minister (herein and evermore called Larry ) started to focus in on me. I was shy. I was quiet. I lacked confidence. I was awkward and that part never changed. But I digress. I didn t think I had any real talents. I didn t sing in front of people, I didn t know how to play any instruments, and I certainly didn t think I could ever stand in front of a group and testify to my love for Jesus and His incredible love for me. All of these barriers and all of these doubts, these were weeds and thorns in my heart! I don t know who sowed them there, but there they were. And Larry saw directly through them, and knew that I could bear good fruit. His methods of reaching that fruit were sometimes rather maddening. He would insist I do more, insist I sing louder, insist, insist, insist And one day, while working with him, he pushed me further than I thought was comfortable. He wanted me to sing loudly and confidently. I got angry, and sang as loud as I could out of said anger and something incredible happened. I had a voice. It stopped him in his tracks. Frankly, it stopped me in my tracks. The trajectory of my life changed in that instant. Not because I could sing that isn t the point. My life changed because that was the first time I saw through the weeds for myself. You see, we all have weeds and thorns that are trying to choke out this fruit that was sowed by the Sower. Larry didn t teach me how to pull up the weeds, but instead showed me that I could in fact see through them and focus on the fruit. Sometimes the weeds still pop up around me and I feel that self-doubt, or I feel that fear, or I tell myself that I am unworthy and not good enough. But we have a good and forgiving God (today s psalm!) who loves us immensely in spite of the weeds around our hearts! Don t let any of the barriers or weeds or thorns around your heart choke out the good fruit. They do not cancel one another. You can do amazing things even if you feel unworthy to do them. God can move you to incredible heights, even if you fear the summit and want your feet on the ground. You can testify to your love of Jesus, even if your love is flawed and sometimes broken. Cultivate what is good and pure and true in your fields, and trust in the promise that you will indeed bear good fruit. What s holding you back? - Jessica Nelson, Youth Minister H.E.O. Update Thank you for your donations to area food shelves. 40 pounds went to Salvation Army, Mplwd., on July 17. July 24 Anne Carlson, Merrick Community Services, Mplwd. Thank you for your generosity! May God bless you!

FFF: Family-centered Faith Formation Throughout the last year, we focused our hearts on growing in Mercy. This mercy is a tenderness of heart, one that Jesus the King of Mercy has gently instilled in each of us. Moving in to the next year, we will take that tenderness of heart with us in every step we take as we enter into our new theme: a sharpness of mind as we grow in Faith. What is it about our Catholic Faith that brings us closer to the True God? Permanent Adorers Urgently Needed There are currently no adorers for the following hours and are in immediate need: Wednesday Friday 4 pm 5 pm, 6 pm In Faith, - Jessica Nelson Adoration is a prayer that prolongs Eucharistic celebration and communion, during which the soul continues to nourish itself: it feeds on love, on truth, on peace. It feeds on hope, because he before whom we bow does not judge us, does not crush us, but who liberates and transforms us. (Homily for Corpus Christi, May 22, 2008) Pope Benedict XVI Contact Barb Kleiter at 651-774-1172 or timkandbarbk@comcast.net. AED Defibrillator Training Do you know how to respond if someone you know suffers a sudden cardiac arrest? Would others around you know how to respond if it happened to you? Now you can learn by attending one of the training sessions offered free of charge by Maplewood Fire Department. Each session will last approximately 15 minutes. You will learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). As you may remember, Presentation now has four of these AEDs on our campus, thanks to a grant from Lake Elmo Jaycees and the generosity of the Picha/ Hughes family and the Presentation Men s Club! You will also learn Hands- Only CPR. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electronic shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest, a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an out-of-hospital setting (such as at home, at work, in the park), consisting of two easy steps: (1) call 9-1-1 (or send someone to do so), and (2) push hard and fast in the center of the chest. Saturday, August 5 th, in the School Gym Pick one of the following times: 9:00 am; 9:30 am; or 10:00 am Contact Karen Simons by August 1 st with your desired time by email (ksimons@presentationofmary.org) or phone message (651-842-6020). Stewardship Those who are just must be kind, says today s first reading. If our words and deeds are kind and selfless, we will be like the good seed in the Gospel parable and gathered as wheat in the Lord s harvest. NOTICE: There will be no prayer/communion service on Mondays. Help Wanted Two adults/parents needed to manage our Sunday Nursery hour at the 10:30 am Mass. This can be on a rotation basis. Virtus training provided. Please contact Kay Mottaz at 651-842-6022 or kmottaz@ presentationofmary.org. Please make use of the Suggestion Box available in the Kennard Street entrance for this purpose. Remember: it is not a trash box! Have we got the job for you! Presentation School and Parish is seeking extra summer maintenance help, assisting our building engineer with some light summer upkeep, as well as helping him get the classrooms cleaned and ready for the new school year. You would work directly with him, and he would train you in all you need to know. Please submit all applications to the school principal, Nikki Giel, at ngiel@presentationofmary.org. It's hard to believe we have reached the halfway point of summer! So many creative projects and cool field trips have made our time go fast, and we still have plenty of activities left to do! Our trip to Dairy Queen last week is a must for any summer to-do list, and the preschoolers soaked up every tasty morsel! Keep enjoying summer! Concrete/Roof Repair Drive - Ms. Jamie In the next few weeks, you will notice work being done to replace the rectory roof and the concrete sidewalks around the campus. Deferring these repairs is no longer an option, and while the RENEW fund will cover half of the expense, we do not want to incur additional debt to cover the remainder. Please consider extra RENEW donations during the next two months, to cover the $50,000 shortfall that will be temporarily covered by Parish funds. Your generosity is appreciated! Presentation Ladies Bridge Group To the ladies of Presentation Parish and their lady friends who are not members of the parish but are all at home during the day: Interested in keeping your minds alert and throwing in a mix of giggles at the same time? How? By joining the fun-loving, goodnatured Presentation Ladies Bridge Group! When? The 2 nd Monday of every month from 1:00-4:00 pm September through May. Where? In the event of an uneven number of players, you might consider being a substitute. There are always many aha moments in an afternoon: I can t believe I made that bid; Oh, darn why did I do that?! Laughter abounds. After all, it s only a game, but a good one that helps to keep the mind sharp.
