SUNDAY, AUGUST 26, 2018 TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME HOUSEHOLDS IN GOD S SERVICE As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:15b In the ancient world, household was a wide-reaching concept. When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the households of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates, or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors or in public as we encounter many strangers every day in stores or traffic who suddenly are next door to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a household that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The Lord, our God, protected us along our entire journey (Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b). Psalm Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading Christ nourishes and cherishes the Church because we are members of His body (Ephesians 5:21-32 [5:2a, 25-32]). Gospel We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God (John 6:60-69). Thank you for your support. WELCOME BACK! If you have been away, welcome back! If you have missed some Sundays, please consider using your Welcome Back Envelope next Sunday, or any time this month to remit a donation for those regular collections you may have missed. Thank you! +LET US PRAY+ The past few months have been very difficult ones for our Country and for our neighbors in other parts of the world. You may wish to consider adding the following to your daily prayers Lord of all compassion We pray for all those caught up in the midst of tragedy or disaster. For those who have lost life and those working to save lives. For those who are worried for people they love. For those who will see their loved ones no longer. Lord have mercy On those in need of the peace that passes all understanding. On all who turn to you in the midst of turmoil. On those who cry out to you in fear and in love. Lord have mercy On those in confusion and those in despair. On those whose tears have yet to dry. On those in need of your unending love. Lord have mercy Amen.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 26, 2018 TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SAINT MONICA AND THE POWER OF PRAYER FEAST DAY AUGUST 25 th Many of us give up on prayer when we don t get the answer we want when we want it. For nearly two decades, Saint Monica prayed unceasingly for her brilliant, but wayward son. Years and years of prayers, seemingly unanswered. Countless tears shed with no relief. Yet, she would not give up. This mother never yielded in her efforts to see her beloved son find comfort and peace in God. Her quiet wisdom and courage, coupled with her earnest prayers to God, bore fruit she could only have dreamed of. That very act of persistent prayer blessed the entire Church, for we have all benefitted from the conversion of her son, Augustine, who became one of the most revered saints of all time. Monica is a shining example for families today, bringing them courage and hope by guaranteeing that with the grace of God, prayer, and perseverance, any difficulty can be overcome. The power of prayer is like no other. Prayer heals. Prayer strengthens. Prayer unifies. Prayer conquers. Prayer changes everything. So, don t give up. Persistence in prayer can change everything for you, your children, and maybe even the world! St. Monica, your prayer brought your family to Christ, pray for us! A TEST OF LOVE St. Augustine once preached a sermon in which he proposed a kind of self-test to see if we truly love God. Suppose God proposed to you a deal and said, I will give you anything you want. You can possess the whole world. Nothing will be impossible for you Nothing will be a sin, nothing forbidden. You will never die, never have pain, never have anything you do not want and always have anything you do want except for just one thing: you will never see my face. Augustine closed with a question: Did a chill rise in your hearts, when you heard the words, you will never see my face? That chill is the most precious thing in you; that is the pure love of God. St. Augustine s Feast Day is this Tuesday, August 28 th. St. Augustine, you explored the depths of human and divine love, pray for us. LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY Prayer is one of the most powerful weapons God has given us. But knowing how to pray is not always easy. Jesus disciples felt the same confusion. They were familiar with the oft-repeated prayers of the Torah. But, Jesus prayed with a kind of authority and power they had never seen before as though God was listening! So, when they came to Jesus, as told in Matthew 6, they didn t say, Teach us another prayer. They said, Lord, teach us to pray. The Lord s Prayer is Christ s response. It is a beautiful prayer and one that every Christian should hold in their heart. But, elegant as the words are, we should not believe that Jesus intended it to become just another ritualistic prayer. Rather, it was to be an example of how to pray. DO YOU FIND IT DIFFICULT TO PRAY? We know that we need to pray. That s how God gives us His graces. It s how we talk with Him. But, prayer doesn t always come easy. Do you sometimes find it difficult to pray? Do you have days when God seems quiet, or distant? If you are going to persevere (like St. Monica!) you may need a little help. When prayer becomes difficult, one of the ways to gain inspiration is by using a good prayer book. St. Teresa of Avila, an amazing teacher of prayer, always turned to a good book whenever she prepared to pray. But always when I was without a book, my soul would at once become disturbed, and my thoughts wandered. Just like St. Teresa, reading the Church s treasured prayers and words of wisdom gives life to our prayers, and keeps us going when praying becomes hard. There are so many beloved and powerful prayers of the Church that have been compiled by the faithful. Catholic Prayers is a beautiful example. You will find a collection of over 100 of the most popular prayers that have formed the core of Catholic tradition, divided into four sections You ll find beloved prayers, including basic prayers such as the Our Father and Hail Mary; and classic prayers like the Acts of Faith, Hope, and Charity. Powerful Prayers for special needs, like the Novena to Our Lady of Good Remedy, Prayer to St. Jude the Saint of Hope, and prayers to Saints Joseph, Rita, Anthony, Philomena, and many others. Favorite prayers that have been used by Catholics for centuries, such as Morning Offerings, Litanies, the Prayer of St. Francis, the Offering of St. Ignatius, and other favorites. Special prayers for specific petitions, such as the prayer to St. Gerard Majella for motherhood, St. Peregrine for the healing of cancer, St. Raphael for purity, and dozens more! You may purchase this lovely little book at The Catholic Company, for $18.95 by calling (866) 522-8465 or via their website www.catholiccompany.com. This would make a wonderful gift personalization is available.

y SUNDAY, AUGUST 26, 2018 TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST BAPTISMS A time to be born into the waters of Baptism Alicia Joanne Abraham Hayden Marie Aponte Charlotte Grace Law James Roylee Modafferi Chase Valentin You are children of God, wonderfully made, dearly loved, and precious in His sight. St. Catharine s community welcomes you! We ask that you please remember these precious little ones, and their Parents, Godparents, and Families in your prayers. May God bless them with joy, health, happiness, and a lifetime of love. BANNS OF MARRIAGE Austen James Leavitt Ann Marie Chiappetta THE POPE NEEDS A VACATION, AND, SO DO YOU! This is the height of vacation season, but, as anyone who has ever been to Rome in the summer knows, it s no time to visit there! The city is sweltering, and in a pre-airconditioned world long ago, Romans figured out that they needed a break in the surrounding hills. Even the Pope leaves the city! His destination is usually Castelgandolfo, a lovely little hill town southeast of Rome, overlooking a tranquil lake. It has been a papal possession since about 1600, and in 1929, when most of the papal states were finally lost, the papal dwelling was given extraterritorial rights, meaning that it is an extension of Vatican City and not under Italian rule. Pope Francis spends less time here than his predecessors, though he still slows down the pace of his work in Rome. Vacations can help us visit friends and relatives, and revive those human contacts that the pace of our lives keeps us from cultivating. The Pope needs a vacation, and so do you! There s still time to clear the calendar for at least one or two golden Summer days even if you don t have your own castle in the hills! Please enjoy every single second of these last days of Summer! OUT OF TOWN DON T MISS MASS! For nationwide Mass times and locations when you are on vacation, just call 1-800-MASS TIMES, or visit www.masstimes.com, or www.findaparish.com. And, to keep you up-to-date with what s going on at St. Catharine s, you can always find our Sunday Bulletin on www.saintcatharines.org. The Altar Flowers were donated In Loving Memory of Richard S.
