Service of Word and Sacrament (page 26) Opening Hymn O Lord, You Have in Your Pure Grace Christian Worship 407 Stand M: The grace of our Lord + Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. And also with you. Confession of Sins M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us. Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord, Have Mercy M: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with gratitude and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord. & # # œ œ œ œ œ Lord, have mer - cy. 3

M: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our prayer, O Christ. & # # œ œ œ œ œ Christ, have mer - cy. M: For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who offer here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord. & # # œ œ œ œ œ Lord, have mer - cy. Prayer of the Day M: Let us pray. Lord, keep your household, the Church, in continual godliness and set us free from all adversities that, under your protection, we may serve you with true devotion and holy deeds; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. & # # œ œ œ œ A - men. Be seated. The Word (page 29) First Lesson Genesis 32:22-30 The same night [Jacob] arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, Let me go, for the day has broken. But Jacob said, I will not let you go unless you bless me. 27 And he said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. 28 Then he said, Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed. 29 Then Jacob asked him, Please tell me your name. But he said, Why is it that you ask my name? And there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered. 6

Psalm of the Day Psalm 121 The choir will sing Pilgrim s Song Refrain: I lift up my eyes to the mountains, from where shall come my help? My help shall come from the One who has made the heavens and the earth, the Maker of heaven and earth. God will not let your foot be moved. God who keeps you will not slumber; the One who keeps Israel never slumbers, never sleeps. (Refrain) God will be the one who keeps you, as a shade at your right hand, so the sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon in the night. (Refrain) God will keep you from all evil. God will always guard your life, guard your comings, and your goings, from now and evermore. (Refrain) Second Lesson 2 Timothy 3:14 4:5 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 4:1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 7

Verse of the Day Galatians 4:6 Sung by the choir Alleluia! Because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Father! Alleluia! Stand Gospel Luke 18:1-8a And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2 He said, In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. 3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, Give me justice against my adversary. 4 For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming. 6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. & # # œ œ j œ œ Praise be to you, O Christ! Be seated. Gospel Response Hear Us, Lord Hear us, Lord. We are more music when we pray, than spheres, or angels singing alleluia. Hear us, Lord, for till you hear us, we know not what to say. Your ear to our sighs, our thoughts, and tears give voice and word. Hear yourself, for you in us do pray. Hear us, Lord. We are more music when we pray, than spheres, or angels singing alleluia. 8

Hymn of the Day In You, O Lord, I Put My Trust Christian Worship 448 Sermon Stand Nicene Creed (page 31) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 9

Be Seated. Offering Stand Prayer of the Church M: Gracious God and Father, we praise you for the countless blessings, which we receive from your hand: the beauties of creation and the bounties of the earth, the joy of life and the pleasure of friendship, the good of work and the gift of rest, the privilege to share happiness and sorrow with one another. Above all we praise and thank you for your saving Word and for your Son s body and blood, which you give us to eat and to drink in the sacrament. Through these means of grace, you send the Holy Spirit into our hearts and unite us to Jesus and to the whole Christian Church on earth. Strengthen us through this heavenly food; increase our trust in Christ and our love for one another. M: Great God and Lord, without your continuing help we easily waver in our faith, lose courage, and grow careless in our watchfulness. The times and days are perilous. Give us strength to face the evils of each day with fresh confidence. Open our lips to speak of your grace, and move us to use the gifts that you give us to share your Word of salvation with all people. Protect and prosper the family, the school, the government, and all good institutions that you have established for the benefit of society. Remember in mercy those who are sick and suffering, and bring your healing to troubled homes and lives. Move us to pray for those in need and to help them with deeds of kindness. M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. M: Now, eternal God and Father, keep us in the saving faith and so enable us to overcome all things through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10

Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Sacrament (page 33) Our Lord Jesus has given us a holy supper in which we receive his true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of our faith. In this supper we celebrate the gift of his redemption, we bear witness to the fellowship we share as confessors of the truth, and we proclaim his death until he returns. M: The Lord be with you. œ j And al œ œ œ œ - so with you. M: Lift up your hearts. œ j œ œ œ œ œ œ We li them up to the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. & b œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ It is right to give him thanks and praise. 11

M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. He sends the Holy Spirit to testify that we are his children and to strengthen us when we are weak. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever: Holy, Holy, Holy œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ Ho ly, ho - ly, ho - ly is the Lord of hosts. Œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ The whole earth is full of your glo ry. - Œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ You are my God, and I will ex - alt you. Words of Institution M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is the new testament in my blood, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. M: The peace of the Lord be with you always. œ œ œ A - œ men.
