10 John 20:11-23 30 A.D. at Garden Tomb Jesus s Final Week Monday 11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, 12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. 14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. 16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. 17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. 18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her. 19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. 21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: 23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. 3

1. True or False Mary really knew that the gardener was Jesus? 2. What did the Gospel of John say about Jesus' sheep? 3. What did Jesus tell Mary to do after she recognized it was Him? 4. Who were the disciples afraid of? 5. What kind of greeting did Jesus give them when He stood in their midst? 6. What did Jesus show them in that room? 7. Finish this statement: Jesus is the Prince of _ Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. John 20:16 8. What did Jesus do when He told the disciples to receive the Holy Spirit? 9. What can the Holy Spirit in us enable us to do? 10. Have you ever asked Jesus to forgive you your sins? 4 9

Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: 1. Mary is at the grave because of her great love for Jesus. 2. At the sound of Jesus' Mary believed. 3. Jesus showed the disciples the scars where the nails had been driven in to Him. Jesus appearing to the disciples....(john 20:19) 4. Jesus took away their fear and gave them peace. Then He sends them out as the Father sent Him. 8 5

6 HE S ALIVE! Mary was unable to see Jesus with her physical eyes, but Jesus was still there. He was still with her. We don't see Jesus either, with our eyes, but by faith we believe that He is with us. When Mary turned she saw what she thought was the gardener. She didn't recognize it was Jesus. Do you ever think about why she didn't recognize Him? I wonder if it was because of what she had seen. I wonder if her mind was made up because of seeing Jesus crucified. Nevertheless, when Jesus spoke her name - "Mary" - that's when she recognized it was Him. She knew Jesus' voice. Remember what Jesus said in the Gospel of John? I know my sheep and my sheep know me. He said "my sheep know my voice." Jesus told Mary to "go tell my brothers..." Mary was to be a witness of Jesus. To tell the others that she saw the Lord. Just as Jesus told Mary to go and tell about Him, we too have been sent out by Jesus to witness and to testify that we have seen Him, we've met Him, we know Him and that He is real. Now on the evening of the first day of the week the disciples were behind closed, locked doors. They were afraid of the Jews. But praise God that the locked doors couldn't keep Jesus out, and fear couldn't keep Him away from His own disciples. Jesus came to where they were. And His greeting to them was "Peace be with you!" Even though Jesus told them He would rise again, it must've been such a shock to see Him standing there in their midst. So Jesus showed them His hands and side. After seeing His wounds they knew for sure it was Him and He was risen just like He said. If Jesus told them He'd rise and He did, I think this event finally convinced them that they could trust and believe His words, no matter what! Again Jesus spoke Peace to them. He's the Prince of Peace and wants us to enjoy life and live with His peace in our hearts & minds no matter what our outward circumstances are. As Jesus sent them out to witness & testify He breathed on them and said "Receive the Holy Spirit." Why? Because we need Jesus' Spirit in us to do the work. Not our power, or might or strength, but His Spirit to do the work of the ministry. His Spirit in us will enable us to forgive men when they sin against us. The Father sent Jesus to forgive us, and we, by the power of His Spirit are to forgive others as we've been forgiven! Amen. 7
