B0U8WUI, LOUIS PHIUIP. INTERVnW. ' 4 9 6 f 4684 Interviewer, Ethel V. Elder,, June 17, 193d. Interview with loula Phillip Bousaan, tfaurike, Oklahoma* r. I wsa born January 24, 1859 et Richmond, Virginia. I case to the plains of Texas with my parents in the early days when I was just a little lad and I do not know very much about the traveling at that time as I was so wall. I lived* around' there until I was about sixteen years old with first one then the other of friends as my people died when I wae avail. They came to Oklahoma some time in the early days- and settled around the Oaage and Creek Nation. I want back to Texas with some people and settled dose 4 to the Boot Bill Ceaetery, in Oldham County. I was made appointed United States Deputy Marshal as toon ae I was old enough*and I worked then for many years in Texas and some in the state of Oklahoma after I case here. The great outlaw, Billy the Kid, surrendered his gun and horse at the time of hie first capture to me. The "Kid" killed his first men while wo iking as e bell-hop at the age of fourteen years in Silrer City, New Mexico. I believe that was in 1876.

BOUSMAH, LOUIS PHILLIP.. INTERVIEW r. 4684 49? The Kid was givene boa.s of $5.00 per herd for every man he killed after he was turnsd loose again. Some people say that In those days Iwaa a true character of the popular - adventure atory "The Saga of Billy the Kid/* I was deputy under eld Pat Garrett in Fort Summer for e long time. I hate seen many more men die with their boot a on in the McSwen- Murphy feud and in aearoh for Billy the Kid than any other man ray age, I guesa. I was married at Tascosa, Texas, fiftysix years ago and came to Oklahoma and settled cloae to Fleetwood. I crosaed Red Hirer on a ferryboat Just routh of the place where Terra! is now; thia ferryboat was o«ned and operated by a man named Dutch Jonea, so they always called it Jones' Ferry. '" TRAILS The Old Chiaholm Trail came along south of Terra 1 and Ten along close to Fleetwocti.. I-have traveled this old trail many times trailing some outlaw, and then I have herded cattle some along the old trail. RASCB HOUSE The only ranch house which I remember close to Fleetwood was up on Mud Creek and was owned by Bill tfeahington, and

BOUSMiM, LOUIS PHILLIP. INTBH7ISW.. 4684 ^ -3- - ^> _ 0 V any people used to coae to see the place and it surety was a,pretty place and'the-house was a greet big house. I don't reaember how neny roona there were In the houae. Watering Hole. Roy-Spradllng and Porter Brothers owned the Sast-K.ff. Tank Ranch. -There waa a ranch-house^ on this place but not a rery large one. They had the only watering hole for the public that X can think of; aeny thousand head of cattle were, driven to this place to'be watered. This wara not very far from the Claypool stoiw/. - ' ' ' Salt Grounds. Mr. J. L. Morgan would *bring" out barrels of salt and' we would saw thea half in two and bury them down in^ the ground so the cattle could not turn them orer.and break up the barrels. The Coaanohe Indians usejto coae down through there for their horses to get salt and water; a great bunch of t&ea* would come together and then after they let their horses hare ell they wanted they would go on down to the Suggs Ranch to. see what they could find there. They were alwaya rery nice and peaceable and attended to their own business.

B0U9UAK, *LOUIS PHILLIP., ". 499 INTERVIEW. School The first»chool in this settlement w*i built by settlet people. It was a log house not Very, largo, was called the Preirle Grove School and was used for a church hone»,too. We bought our supplies at Sugden, a nan by the naae of Grogan ran a mercantile a tore, and aome tiaea we would get J things at Ryan. Dr. Flke.was the first doctor at Sugden. ftote: There seems to be aone cuhfu^vion in itav Desman*s story aboiit "Billy the Kld H ; but other varta of his reminiscences have some value and the manuscript is included.
