A Letter from Father Page 2 November 6, 2011 From the Desk of Fr. Reno. HAPPY ALL SAINTS DAY, A HOPEFUL ALL SOULS DAY, A MEMORABLE VETERAN S DAY AND A HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Many heartfelt thanks for your life-giving support to St. Francis Church and World Mission Sunday. Thank you kindly also for your thoughtfulness, friendship, consideration and prayer on Priesthood Sunday. Celebrating the Feast of All Saints Day and commemorating all of the faithful departed on All Souls Day, as we did on November 1st and 2nd, reminds us that we are connected to the saints and our many beloved deceased and we remember them with gratitude. They have gone before us marked with the sign of faith and belief in Jesus, which they gained through their dedication and sometimes martyrdom. While many of us fear the prospect of our own deaths, we also are afraid of losing those we love, as it can be the hardest thing to endure in life. That is why God s promise of eternal life is so important to keep in mind and to believe in with all the strength of our faith. Our loved ones are never really gone - they have simply moved on to the happy, eternal life that Jesus prepared for them. We will meet them again and until we do, we can still speak to them through prayer. This is, of course, the foundation of our most central Christian belief - that our loving God sacrificed His only Son in order to defeat death for us. It was the greatest of all possible gifts. Because of it, our lives need no longer be dominated by our deaths, as it no longer holds any real power over us. One day a little boy asked, Do you know the best thing about heaven, Father? When little Jack asked me that question, a hundred responses came to my mind. Fortunately, when he saw me pause, he answered his own question. No one dies in heaven, Father. He was right! Once we overcome death and enter the kingdom of heaven, we will enjoy life everlasting. Here on earth though, when we are saddened and mourn the loss of loved ones, we know we are still united with the deceased in the communion of saints. Prayer is a great source of comfort, hope and peace and it reassures us that our loved ones are in God s loving embrace. Hope allows us to open our hearts in anticipation of an eternity of beauty and joy in Heaven. Prayers also remind us that God loves and watches over us and that for Him, alive and dead have no meaning. Everyone is alive in the Lord! During this month, please remember our military men and women in your prayers as they are sacrificing their lives for our freedom. At Thanksgiving time, we can thank God for our many blessings and share our generosity and support of our Missionary endeavors. During this month, it will be the privilege and honor of each of us to remember all of our departed loved ones during the celebration of the Eucharist and in our daily prayers. Gratefully yours,

The month of November is here - a time to remember, to give thanks and to pray for our loved ones - family members, friends and Religious in community. Whether we are young or old, in good health or struggling with health issues, we all experience moments of darkness. That darkness can be spiritual, physical, mental or emotional. There are, thankfully, spaces of great light. Yet, we sometimes feel our way through moments of darkness in our life, hanging on to hope and squinting for glimpses of light. The wonder and the beauty of it all is that God is constantly calling us into a deeper relationship, into a deeper experience of life. Jesus invites us to continue to make the journey with him and in that final passing from the darkness into the fullness of life, our lives will continue within that Divine Mystery of light and love. This, I believe, is the hope we celebrate during the month of November. Let us keep one another, our departed ones and our whole earth community in prayer. Happy Halloween! Happy All Saints! Happy All Souls! Sister Mary Frances, R.S.M.
