MAMBALAM CMYK Vol. 12, No. 14 Kodambakkam flyover closed to traffic for repairs Repair and renovation work on Kodambakkam flyover is likely to begin in the coming week. The bridge was closed for public use from October 6. Traffic has been diverted through Rangarajapuram flyover. A Chennai Corporation official said that presently renovation work is going on under the flyover to strengthen it. Soon the works on the flyover road would begin and might go on for at least two months, he said. Trees on roads near the bridge were felled last week to facilitate the repair and strengthening of the 50-yearold structure. The felling took place on Viswanathapuram Main Road, Station Road and Chakrapani Street. Many branches were also pruned to enable better movement of vehicles. A few years ago, the Corporation had set in motion the process of repairing and strengthening Kodambakkam Bridge which serves as a crucial link to Ashok Nagar, Saligramam, K.K. Nagar and Vadapalani. The civic body evicted several shops beneath the facility to carry out repair work that included spraying of anti-corrosion material, polymer plastering and grouting. Repairs to the 623-metrelong and 12.8-metre-wide bridge were necessitated after an expert study commissioned by the Corporation found that expansion joints had weakened due to water seepage. 21,000 copies of this edition are delivered FREE every Sunday! Cops chase car, rescue 2 women from flesh trade A night patrol police team busted a mobile prostitution racket after a hot chase and rescued two young women from flesh trade, near Vadapalani, in the wee hours of October 8. According to the police, a mobile patrol team attached to Arumbakkam police station spotted a parked luxury car with its cabin lights on near a hotel on Poonamalle High Road. On noticing the police vehicle, the car sped away from the spot. A movie like dramatic chase ensued along the busy Jawaharlal Nehru Road and the patrol team managed to finally intercept the vehicle near Ashok Pillar (Ashok Nagar). The fleeing car grazed more than 25 vehicles along the way and caused panic and put other vehicles on the road at a high risk. On interception, policemen found three persons, including two young women inside the car and picked them up for interrogation. Preliminary investigations revealed that the women hailed from Bangalore and were being forced into prostitution. The car driver, Sivasaravana Maniram, was arrested and remanded in judicial custody, while the women were sent to the government home in Kellys. Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition October 13-18, 2013 NO HOLDS BARRED By M.A. SADANAND NOTA The imminent General Election promises to the honest citizen, who is a voter, the bonus choice of choosing none of the uglies who harass the registered voter through the candidates oily guys for his/her valuable votes by providing an escape route in the form of a legend named NOTA which, expanded, reads None Of The Above. Isn t our democracy beautiful since no election in any part of the world gives the elector such freedom not to choose from the array of goofs who want to take him/her to paradise. It amounts to telling the guys that the paradise they promise may not be the one that the voter wants to enter through the ballot box. I am the monarch of my life as ordained by some force that guides us all and no election promise can affect the course of my journey through this beautiful life of quiet and peace and universal love that is my guiding star that has shone on me for 80 beautiful years, 20 years of which I owe to Anna Nagar Times and its Editor for not balling up my stuff and throwing it in the trash bin. NOTA, the new election philosophy, will, if not frowned upon by judicial diktat, set free the Indian mind and revolutionise the elective process as an aid to humanism in all walks of life. Angry Rahul may not get a repeat chance to shout nonsense and similar sweet words at attempted legislative imbecility. I think NOTA is our second freedom movement which is our birthright. Discourses on Saisath Saritha Under the auspices of Sri Shirdi Sai Meditation Mandir (6, Sarojini Street, T. Nagar) there are discourses on Sri Saisath Saritha at 6.30 p.m on Sundays in its premises. T. Thiruvalluvan (Founder) told Mambalam Times that mass spiritual healing is conducted at 7.30 p.m on Thursdays and Sundays. More details can be had in phones 2643 2323, 4212 5118 and 94444 53777. Kodambakkam bridge traffic diversion affects Bazullah Road residents Sir, With the repair work on the Kodambakkam Bridge commencing, the diversion of traffic via Rangarajapuram flyover began on Sunday, October 6. Even on a Sunday, at around 8 a.m the traffic came to a crawl on the flyover. Many MTC buses and other heavy vehicles which used to pass through Kodambakkam bridge will now use Rangarajapuram flyover. One dreads the traffic that can clog the bridge on week- days. With festival days coming soon, Bazullah Road residents at one end of the flyover will surely have nightmares. By a simple stroke of work, the authorities can ease the traffic on Usman Road for T. Nagar users by clearing Mambalam High Road of encroachments and making it fully motorable. This will make also ease the traffic on Rangarajapuram flyover. Sriram, 90, Bazullah Road, T. Nagar; Ph: 98407 73410 Free Veda classes thrice a week Kurichi Lakshminarasim-hachariar (resident of 8, 2 nd Main Road, CIT Nagar East, Nandanam) conducts free Veda and Suktham classes from 9 a.m to 10 a.m on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Sivasub-ramanian (resident of No.3, Q Block, Prem Nagar Colony, South Boag Road, T. Nagar. Ph: 97898 25597), popularly known as Siva Bhagavathar, was honoured with the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham Asthana Vidwan title by Sri Jayendra Saraswathi on October 4 in the temple premises. Siva Bhagavathar has performed thousands of Nama-sankeerthanams and bhajans in Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit, Kannada, Marathi and Hindi in a number of temples and leading sabhas in the country. He has sung more than 12,000 devotional songs, some of which are his own compositions. He works as a Sanskrit teacher in PSBB Millenium School (Gerugambakkam). He holds an M. Phil degree in Sanskrit. Is the monkey watching over his exercise routine? A park visitor was seen exercising in front of a garbage bin designed like being held by a monkey in Panagal Park on the early hours of October 9. It was a funny sight as it seemed as though the monkey was watching him. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Corporation should be strict in relocating pavement vendors Sir, Chennai Corporation had fixed the deadline as August 15 for the pavement vendors to shift to the newly built shopping complex in Pondy Bazaar (T. Nagar). This was later extended by a month as the vendors cited reasons of pending work relating to the fitting of shutters and other structures in the complex in their allotted spaces. It must be pointed out that the complex was built 2 years ago and only now after legal wrangles and negotiations with the vendor union, the deadline was fixed and extended. Now it looks like they have sought time till Deepavali to get into the new complex on the plea that the allocated rooms need to be made safe and secure to protect their goods. These excuses are nothing but delaying tactics employed by the vendors. For, what safety and security do they have now for their wares which they keep on the pavement? All these days, they have carried out their business in rain and shine without any protection from the weather. Now that they have pucca rooms at the complex, for which they must remain thankful to the government, they should have moved into the new complex by this time. They could have easily carried out necessary structural work in the rooms allotted to them at the complex even as they conducted their business from the new premises. This is what is normally done by the shopkeepers whenever they undertake alterations to their shops. One does not understand why the Corporation remains pliant? Having given the vendors a long rope, the Corporation should have taken tough measures to make them move into the new complex. It remains doubtful whether the vendors will ever move at all after Deepavali. In the likely event of the vendors vacating the pavement, credible measures must be put in place by the civic body to prevent once and for all any illegal occupation at the vacated places by a new crop of vendors/hawkers. This is most important and if the Corporation is unable to do this, then the efforts to de-congest will become meaningless and futile. While one has the right to do business, in so exercising such rights, it should not come in the way another exercising his/ her right. Had the civic body nipped the illegal occupation of the public places like pavements which are meant for the exclusive use of the pedestrians, in the bud itself, it does not have to build complexes to house them. Just because a vendor has been doing business from an illegally occupied place for a long period, neither does it become legal nor can he claim as his/her right to do business. V. S. Jayaraman, 31 Motilal Street, T. Nagar Sir, I am Vasudevan, parent of two school going children living on Alagirisamy Salai (K. K. Nagar). Even though my house is just 300 meters from PSBB School where my kids study, I have a harrowing time daily in walking them to and fro from the school. Parents with vehicles, private and school owned vans and autos block off the road near the school gate by parking the vehicles haphazardly and making it difficult and unsafe for pedestrians. The plight is even worse for a number of senior citizens who come by walk to drop and pick up their grandchildren studying in the school. Traffic nightmare near PSBB School entrance Damodara arati in ISKCON Temple from October 19 DamodaraArati will be celebrated from October 19 to November 17, from 7 p.m to 7.45 p.m, on weekdays and from 1p.mto 1.30 p.m on Sundays in ISKCON Temple (off East Coast Road, Akkarai, Sholinganallur). Devotees can offer lamps. There will be a daily discourse on Damodaraleelai and chanting of Damodaraashtakam and Hare Krishna kirtan during the aratitime. Workshop on Nonviolence next Sunday Gandhian Integrated Forum Trust (1, 86 th Street, Ashok Nagar) will conduct a free day long workshop on Nonviolence on Sunday, October 20, from 10 a.m to 5 p.m in Gandhi Arangam (Thakaar Baba Vidyalaya, 58, Venkatnarayana Road, T. Nagar). Since the seats are limited, please register in advance by calling 93810 07304 / 98406 88692 / 98844 25930. The van drivers and even educated parents in vehicles are callous in their attitude and hurl abuses when asked to move their vehicles. At least during morning hours, there is a traffic constable who tries his best to regulate the vehicles and make a passage for the walkers. I request the school and traffic authorities to take up this issue and demarcate an area near the school gate as a novehicle zone during school opening and closing hours to ease and safeguard the life of the pedestrians and students.
