Our Forever-High Priest: Hebrews 7 Pastor Abe Stratton Sunday Morning, March 12

Transcription:

Pastor Scott Velain Last week we talked about: Hebrews Chapters 7c and 8 A New High Priest, A Change In The Law? 1. The fact that Melchizedek was not Yahshua Jesus according to the author of the book of Hebrews. 2. Who Melchizedek very well may have been according to the book of Jasher and historical documentation. 3. Melchizedek is not a name.. but rather an Order.. a Priesthood. 4. Speculation is healthy when studying the scriptures... as long as the scriptures do not directly rebuke what we are speculating. What was the point that the author of the book of Hebrews was trying to make? The over all point that the author of the book of Hebrews was trying to make is that Yahshua Jesus... who was after the order of Melchizedek... had a much better Covenant than that of the Levitical Aaronic Priesthood: Heb 7:22 This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. PROOF TEXT 1: Luk 22:20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. PROOF TEXT 2: Jer 31:33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. PROOF TEXT 3: Heb 10:15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, 1

Heb 10:16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds," Heb 10:17 then he adds, "I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more." PROOF TEXT 4: Heb 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. Heb 8:8 For he finds fault with them when he says: "Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, Heb 8:9 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord. Heb 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Heb 8:11 And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. Heb 8:12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more." This Melchizedek Priesthood (unlike the Levitical Priesthood) is a Priesthood that lasts forever and will not end: Heb 7:23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, Heb 7:24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Heb 7:28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever. So before moving forward in Hebrews chapter 7 lets go back and once again read Hebrews chapter 7 just to refresh our memories: Heb 7:1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, Heb 7:2 and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. Heb 7:3 He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever. 2

Heb 7:4 See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils! Heb 7:5 And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, though these also are descended from Abraham. Heb 7:6 But this man who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. Heb 7:7 It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior. Heb 7:8 In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives. Heb 7:9 One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, Heb 7:10 for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him. Heb 7:11 Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron? Heb 7:12 For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. Heb 7:13 For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. Heb 7:14 For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. Heb 7:15 This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, Heb 7:16 who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. Heb 7:17 For it is witnessed of him, "You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek." Heb 7:18 For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness Heb 7:19 (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God. Heb 7:20 And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, Heb 7:21 but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, 'You are a priest forever.'" Heb 7:22 This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. Heb 7:23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, Heb 7:24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Heb 7:25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. Heb 7:26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, 3

unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Heb 7:27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. Heb 7:28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever. Now... the author of the book of Hebrews tells us that perfection was not attainable through the Levitical Priesthood in verse 11. And he tells us that this is the reason that there had to be another Priest arise after the order of Melchizedek.. rather than one from the Levitical Priesthood. So clearly... this Melchizedek Priesthood is greater than the Levitical Priesthood for several reasons, and we touched on a few of these reasons last week. Once of them being the fact that the Melchizedek Priesthood was a Priesthood that had a duel authority. Both Civil and Religious authority was held by a Melchizedek Priest. Another very clear difference was the fact that the Melchizedek Priest had to be appointed by God himself, and it was only by an oath.. given by God.. that one could attain to the Melchizedek Priesthood. And we're even told in verses 9 and 10.. that the Levites who were part of the Levitical Priesthood... gave tithes and offerings to the Melchizedek Priesthood because the Levitical Priesthood was still in the loins of Abraham when Abraham gave tithes to the Melchizedek Priest. So clearly... the author of the book of Hebrews is trying to convey to us that this Melchizedek Priesthood was indeed greater than the Levitical Priesthood. Another important fact was the fact that our Messiah was not from the tribe of Levi, so he could not have been a Levitical Priest. Our Messiah clearly came from the house of David and the tribe of Judah, and this is the very point we see being made by the author of the book of Hebrews in verse 14. Heb 7:14 For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. And so once again over and over again the point that the author of the book of Hebrews is trying to get through to us is that this Melchizedek Priesthood that our Messiah holds is much greater than the Levitical Priesthood that was given through the law of Moses. And that's the point of the whole chapter here in chapter 7. THE CHANGE IN THE LAW: Now... I want to talk a little bit about what we find in verse 12: Heb 7:12 For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. 4

This verse found in Hebrews chapter 7 is a verse that has been used out of context to further the false doctrine that teaches that the law is all done away with and nailed to some tree somewhere. But the truth is... that this is not the case... and that is not taught in our scriptures, and this kind of demonic doctrine should never be taught by any true God fearing Bible believing, Holy Spirit filled, Christian. The only change in the law was that we do not need to offer up sacrifices of dead animals for sin any longer. Our Passover lamb... who is Yahshua Jesus.. paid the debt of our sin for us at the cross.. however.. this does not mean that Gods laws are all nailed to the cross in any way shape or form, and I think if you've been with us through our study into the book of Hebrews you already know that the author of the book of Hebrews would never agree with such a demonically inspired doctrine. God's laws are in no way, shape, or form.. nailed to some tree. And just to verify that fact lets go the read the red letter words of our Messiah and see what he had to say about such a doctrine of demons: Mat 5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Mat 5:18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Mat 5:19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Mat 5:20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Rev 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I think that what the author of the book of Hebrews is trying to tell us concerning the law is better stated in verses 18 and 19: Heb 7:18 For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness Heb 7:19 (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God. So in other words just as the author tells us... A former commandment is set aside. That Commandment was the commandment to sacrifice animals every time we sinned. This is not in effect any more... but this does not mean that God simply destroyed the rest of his laws, commandments, precepts, and appointments. 5

God's laws have been in effect from the days of Adam and Eve and still continue on even to this very day. Gods laws are his Word. They are who he is and what he stands for. And for more information on this scriptural fact you can visit us at HolyImpactMinistries.com. And for those of you who were wrongly taught that the Apostle Paul taught against the law... I would suggest spending some time in your prayer closet asking God for the discernment to understand what is clearly found in the scriptures, and the very writings of the Apostle Paul himself: We find in verse 22 that Yahshua Jesus is the guarantor of a better covenant, and we know this to be true if we understand what that better covenant is. And once again we can find that in Jeremiah 13:33 and again in Hebrews chapter 10:15 through 17.. and again in Hebrews chapter 8.. but let me warn you.. it does require some studying. It does require us to take the time to open the cover of our Bibles, and it does require a true heart that is only interested in the truth. If we open the cover of our Bibles with out a true heart that only yearns for the truth... and we set out trying to prove our own pre-reherst agenda's... then we will fall every time. The laws of God are written on the hearts and in the minds of those who truly love him, and it is we who truly love him that keep his commandments and his commandments are not burdensome to us, because we remember that our Messiah told us that if we loved him we 6

would keep his commandments, and his commandments are not his own... but his Fathers who is greater than he... and who gave him what to say, and what to preach. To many of today's modern day Christians are chained by their own man made, man created, man fabricated doctrines of demons that are driven by nothing more than the wisdom of men.. thinking that Yahshua Jesus came to preach and teach his own commandments and his own laws, and his own holidays, and his own feast days, and his own appointments. They think he came to celebrate his own birthday, and to teach your children about a fat man all dressed in red who comes out of the fireplace to give your children all the desires of their hearts... and to teach them about the divination of flying reindeer and magical elves and rabbits that lay colored eggs all over their houses. They believe what they want to believe because they don't have the eyes to see, nor the ears to hear. They are forever studying but never perceiving the truth of Gods word because they are still bound by the chains of the wisdom of men and their age old philosophies, and theologies, and they care more about what their so called Early Church Fathers said than what the one true God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob says. And this is sad my friends, and this is what the author of the book of Hebrews has been trying to tell us from the very beginning of the book. Heb 6:4 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, Heb 6:5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, Heb 6:6 and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. Heb 6:7 For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. Heb 6:8 But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. And again in the 10 th chapter of the book of Hebrews we find this!: Heb 10:26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, Heb 10:27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. Heb 10:28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. Heb 10:29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? 7

Heb 10:30 For we know him who said, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay." And again, "The Lord will judge his people." Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. So once again the message in chapter 7 of the book of Hebrews should be clear to us. It's all about the power that our Messiah has been given by his father. It's about the higher priesthood that he holds.. it's about the covenant that his very blood rang in that writes the laws of God on our hearts and in our minds. It's about the oath that our Father in Heaven made... that appointed his son as a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek forever and ever. It's about not loosing the salvation that has been offered to us. It's about both a blessing and a warning... not to take this salvation, or the grace of God lightly... but to guard and to protect it... in the hope that we will be given the strength and the endurance to run this race to the end... and so that we may have the victory promised to us when he finally comes to ring in his new kingdom. The book of Hebrews does not mince words... nor does it coddle the wicked, or the nonbeliever. It tells us the truth of what is expected of us as Gods people, and it picks us up and puts on back on the right track so that we don't sink back into the ways of the world. It puts the fear of God back into our hearts so that we may know that the teachings of men are foolishness to God. It literally destroys the teachings of men, and their once saved always saved doctrine of demons that should never be taught by any God fearing, scripture believing man, women or child! The book of Hebrews is all bout the rock that we are to build our houses upon, and the obedience of faith that we have been given through the Ruach Hakodesh of God that we may know that faith comes by hearing... and hearing by the word of God... and not by the word of men. And with all of that under our belts... let us read the 8 th chapter... of the book of Hebrews: Heb 8:1 Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, Heb 8:2 a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. Heb 8:3 For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Heb 8:4 Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. Heb 8:5 They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, "See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain." 8

Heb 8:6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. Heb 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. Heb 8:12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more." Heb 8:13 In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. In verses 8:1 and 2 we're told that Yahshua Jesus our Messiah sits at the right hand of God our Father in the tent that is set up by God... not by man. We must remember that the tabernacle in the wilderness was a replication of what was already in Heaven. The Holy of holies on earth and that earthly tent was a replication of the original Holy of holies in Heaven.. and this is where our Messiah sits at the right hand of his Father. So in other words let there be no mistake... he is the real deal according to the author of the book of Hebrews. Once again let us go back to Psalms 110: Psa 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool." Psa 110:2 The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! Psa 110:3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours. Psa 110:4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, "You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." Psa 110:5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. Psa 110:6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth. Psa 110:7 He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head. What King David wrote here in the book of Psalms is exactly what the author of the book of 9

Hebrews is telling us in Hebrews chapter 8 verses 1 and 2. All we have to do is go back and listen to the words of David, and see, know, and understand that we are living in the end of the age. These words that were a mystery to those people who lived in Davids time... are not a mystery to us. We know who the Son is. We know where he came from. And we know where he went. And I want us to understand what he's trying to tell us in verse 3: Heb 8:3 For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. What does Yahshua Jesus have to offer? He has offered himself.. as the last Passover Lamb.. as a sacrifice... and all of us as gifts to his Father.. who have chosen to follow after him, and to keep and obey his commandments not because they are written on tablets of stone or on parchment... but because they are written on the flesh of our hearts and in our minds. And notice what's being said here in verses 4 and 5: Heb 8:4 Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. Heb 8:5 They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, "See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain." Once again we see this Copy and shadow of heavenly things. Even the tabernacle in the wilderness was designed and made to resemble the original tabernacle in Heaven. So the earthly Levitical Priesthood is nothing more than a copy and a shadow of heavenly things. We must understand that everything that our Father set forth here on earth points directly to his Son and what he was sent to do. The plan of our Father in Heaven is a masterful plan that only he knew about in the beginning. But now that the true Messiah has been revealed to us in this day and age... we can have the privilege of being able to look back into the past and see how and why our Father did what he did as he unfolded his plan right before our very eyes. From the beginning clear back in the garden when Yahovah told the serpent that there would be enmity between his seed and the woman's seed, and he told the serpent that the woman's seed would bruise his head, and that the serpent would bruise his heel. Yahovah was prophesying about his only begotten Son. And that it would be God's seed in the woman... that would bruise the head of the serpent. And everything done between then and now has all been planned by the wisdom of the one true God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. 10
