Welcome and Passing of the Peace The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. The Worship of God Sara Turpin Prelude Since I Gave My Heart Away Tom White Stephen Schwartz During the prelude, you are invited to make the transition from getting here to being here. Use this time to prepare for worship, and allow the Spirit to refresh you. Call to Worship Psalm 84 Harriet Keller How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise. Happy are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion. As they go through the valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with pools. They go from strength to strength; the God of gods will be seen in Zion. O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob! Behold our shield, O God; look on the face of your anointed. For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than live in the tents of wickedness. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; he bestows favor and honor. No good thing does the Lord withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, happy is everyone who trusts in you. 1

*Hymn of Praise This is My Father s World Number 17 TERRA PATRIS Prayers of the People Prayer of Confession Watchful God, you know your plight. Offended, we have not believed your words. Complaining, we have betrayed your love. We are weak, estranged, wandering, and lost. Seeking to stand in our own strength, we fall. Strangers to your holiness, we wander. Defenseless against evil within and without, we are lost. Shine your light in our darkness, and guide us back to our place in you. Amen. Declaration of Forgiveness The Living God hears our cry and forgives our sin! The Lord God is a sun and shield, bestowing favor and honor on us through Christ, the bread from heaven, who brings us back to God and feeds us with his strength. Children s Moment Children s Church is not offered today. Sara Turpin Scripture Reading Ephesians 6:10-20 Sasha Hawks Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak. This is the Word of our Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Transforming Erica Whitaker Anthem We Come to Say Thank You Chancel Choir Pepper Choplin Thank You, O Lord, we come to say, Thank You. Hymnology This is My Father s World The three eight-line stanzas of this hymn as it currently appears contains six of the 16 stanzas of a poem by Maltble D. Babcock which first appeared in Thoughts for Everyday Living (New York), published posthumously in 1901. The first line of each of the 16 stanzas begins This is My Father s world. The hymn suggests some of the implications of Psalm 24:1 regarding God s ownership of the world and his continuing care of it. This text, along with its familiar tune (designated TERRA BEATA), first appeared in a Southern Baptist hymnal, New Baptist Hymnal (Nashville, 1926, No. 406).
