Red River District March 2018 Volume 13 Issue 2 OUR PURPOSE The organized unit of United Methodist Women is a community of women whose Purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the Global ministries of the Church. Treasurer Request The first quarter dues need to be mailed to Linda Smith by March 15. Also any monies collected for Rise Against Hunger Linda Smith 405 Magnolia Dr Franklin, TN 37064 NOMINATING COMMITTEE RED RIVER DISTRICT UMW The Red River District UMW faces a real challenge for 2019. There are an extremely large number of vitally important offices to be filled by October, 2018. They include: President, Vice-President, Recording Secretary, Spiritual Growth Coordinator, Education & Interpretation Coordinator, Social Action Coordinator, Secretary of Program Resources (Reading Program), Communications Coordinator (Newsletter), & 4 members of the Nominating Committee. If you feel the call to service or if you would like to recommend someone for one of these offices, please contact Pat Allen, (931) 648-0174 or patfallen@yahoo.com. If you are currently serving in an office, but are willing to continue serving in that capacity for the next 2 years, we welcome receiving that information. Thanks in advance for your help. Pat Allen Nominating Committee Chair

Spiritual Growth I like to color. Until a few years ago, I would borrow left-behind coloring books of my now-grown children and would find myself coloring Winnie-the-Pooh, My Little Ponies, and a variety of construction and farm equipment pictures. Now, however, it seems that many adults like to color, and there are adult coloring books readily available to suit all interests. Having said that, it is no wonder I was drawn to the Reading Program book, Pray and Color by Sybil MacBeth which Joanna Bailey had available at the district officer s training in Dickson. Ms. MacBeth claims that coloring can be a spiritual practice, which fits right into my desire to grow spiritually this year. I was at first skeptical at using coloring as a way to pray, but the more I read, the more motivated I became to try! The first half of the book is devoted to explaining how coloring can be spiritual, coloring as prayer, different types of prayers and ways to pray, and suggestions for using the second half of the book the coloring templates or pages. One thought that appealed to me is that a spiritual practice is an activity in which the mind, body, emotions, thoughts, and spirit are all together at the same time in the same place sort of the opposite of multi-tasking and I can see how this can happen when you concentrate on coloring a prayer. I do not want to divulge any more of Sybil Mac- Beth s ideas and suggestions and beliefs about praying and coloring, but I do encourage you to visit Joanna Bailey s Resource table at district meetings and check out Pray and Color; even if you don t like to color I think you will be inspired! Spiritual Day Apart THE RED RIVER DISTRICT UMW SPIRITUAL DAY APART APRIL 28, 2018 9:00-12:00 Ashland City United Methodist Church 2226 Oak Street, Ashland City, TN 37015 Program: Bethlehem Centers of Nashville 1417 Charlotte Avenue. Nashville, TN 37203. (615) 329-3386 Executive Director: Mr. Steve E. Fleming. Bethlehem Center of Nashville is a National Mission Institution of the Women s Division, General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. More than 100 years ago, Estelle Haskins, a Caucasian missionary, and Sallie Sawyer, an African American Fisk University graduate, merged services to start a kindergarten, well baby clinic, sewing circle and recreation programs. These two women broke racial and gender barriers of their time to form a ministry to serve those in need. Today, Bethlehem Center continues its ministry of changing lives and building futures to support the needs of inner-city working families. As a Family Resource Center, we remain committed to the education and care of at-risk children and youth, serving the needs of seniors, feeding the hungry and providing hope, help and healing for those in need. OUR MISSION: Bethlehem Center of Nashville is a non-profit Family Resource Center that promotes self-reliance and positive life choices for children, adolescents and seniors in the North Nashville community through the delivery of quality programs and services. Established in 1894 as a rescue mission and day school by United Methodist Women, we continue the ministry of changing lives and building futures. 3

Rise Against Hunger SAVE THE DATE Intergenerational Event August 18 Brunch begins at 9:00 Hilldale UMC, Clarksville, TN At our District Training Event it was voted that we would have a meal packaging event for Rise Against Hunger as our all-ages hands-on mission project. In order to make this happen, we need to raise $3000-$3500. We are asking each District UMW unit to send in $100 by July 1 (additional donations would be appreciated). Please send in to Linda Smith, our District Treasurer. We will need to provide $0.29 cents for each meal we plan to package. A group of 40 to 50 volunteers can package 10,152 meals (the minimum number) in about two hours. There is something there for everyone to do; if you cannot stand for long, don't worry - you may sit and do this job! We are especially excited to have children and youth attend. We are planning to have a couple of the packets prepared. What an impact to see how different our lives would be if we were dependent on this for our well-being. Please feel free to invite folks who aren't in UMW (church youth groups, other church friends, neighbors) as well as your own units. Let this be a family event- children and families are invited. We would like to get a head-count by August 1. Website for more information: http://www.riseagainsthunger.org/about-us/ 6

A Word From Our President I attended my second Red River District THR!VE training last week facilitated by District Superintendent Ken Murray and his new Leadership Team. Thr!ve is based on 3 steps: Loving, Learning, and Leading. Loving As we broke into our Church Council small group, we were asked Where in your community do you see God crying? How will you and your church respond? Learning Listen to each other and the community and ascertain where and what God is leading you to do. Our Intergenerational Event on August 18 will be a Food Packaging Event for Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now) which is an International food program. Also, take note of the Conference UMW Events. Hope to see many of you soon! Blessing, Terry Guertin 931-237-1964 Leading Don t sit back, lead in making a plan and follow through. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN YOU GOT THIS!! This is what the UMW has been doing for almost 150 years! But.when was the last time YOU, personally and as a unit, asked yourself where do YOU see God crying and/or in action? Do you look for God Sightings daily? What did you see today? Red River District UMW will have several opportunities to this year to be in Action. At Mission u on March 17, we will be collecting hair and hygiene supplies for the Cherokee Reservation in Cherokee, NC. At the Spiritual Day Apart on April 28, we will be collecting for the Bethlehem Centers in Nashville, TN. 7
