We pray that the Lord bless you through his Word this morning. Notes about your visit: If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to ask one of the greeters or anyone else. Restrooms There are restrooms out the back doors and down the second hallway on the right. Parents, we are so glad that you have brought your little children to church this morning. If needed, there is a nursery out the back doors to the right. Understanding the Church Year Season of Pentecost The second half of the Church Year called Pentecost emphasizes the result of God s work in our hearts through the Word creating and sustaining faith in our hearts and producing good works in our lives. While the emphasis shifts, we never leave behind Christ and his work for us, which was the center of our attention during the first half of the Church Year. 1

GOD WANTS YOUR HEART, NOT JUST YOUR HANDS OPENING HYMN By Grace I m Saved, St. 1-3 384 INVOCATION * M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you CONFESSION M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. * Worship begins in the name of the one true God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. At the very beginning of worship we are reminded of the words spoken in baptism where God puts his name on us. It is only because of God s undeserved love for us that worship is even possible. As we approach God in worship we are brutally honest about who we are, what we have done, and what we deserve from God. Instead of hiding our sin, we run to the only solution God s mercy in Christ. 2

ABSOLUTION M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his command, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. RESPONSIVE SONG By Grace I m Saved, St. 4,5 384 By grace to timid hearts that tremble, In tribulation s furnace tried By grace, despite all fear and trouble, The Father s heart is open wide. Where could I help and strength secure If grace were not my anchor sure? By grace! On this I ll rest when dying; In Jesus promise I rejoice. For though I know my heart s condition, I also know my Savior s voice. My heart is glad; all grief has flown Since I am saved by grace alone. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, preserve the congregation of believers with your never-failing mercy. Help us avoid whatever is wicked and harmful, and guide us in the way that leads to our salvation; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Since Jesus himself has promised to forgive all those who repent of their sins and told us to forgive the repentant, the declaration of forgiveness is as valid and certain as if Christ himself stood before us and declared our sins forgiven. 3

The Word THE FIRST READING Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9 Moses stresses to the Israelites the importance of observing God s Word. But God doesn t just want hands that follow his laws out of fear. He wants hearts that believe his promises and trust in his love. Now, Israel, hear the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land the LORD, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. 2 Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you. 6 Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. 7 What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8 And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? 9 Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. VERSE OF THE DAY Jeremiah 15:15 M: Alleluia. Your words became a joy to me, and the delight of my heart. Alleluia. (Sung response is at the top of the next page) The public reading from Scripture can be traced back to the synagogue service (Luke 4:16-21). From Apostolic times the reading of carefully chosen lessons from the Apostles and Evangelists has been the central part of Christian worship. 4

THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 What goes on in our hearts is just as important as what we do with our hands. In the hearts of all people, there is sin. But through faith in Jesus, our hearts are washed clean and God sees us as his holy children. The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.) 5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, Why don t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands? 6 He replied, Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 5

7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules. 8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions. 14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person s heart, that evil thoughts come sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person. HYMN OF THE DAY Faith Is a Living Power from Heaven 404 SERMON Romans 9:30-10:4 Righteousness is a Matter of the Heart, Not the Hands 30 What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. 32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone. 33 As it is written: See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame. Brothers and sisters, my heart s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God s righteousness. 4 Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. 6

NICENE CREED OFFERING We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. - 2 Corinthians 9:7 7

RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS Today we welcome into our congregation April Best, Peter and Rose Edward, and Andy and Diane Knutson. Praise God for the fellowship we share! LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Sacrament ** M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. ** In the Sacrament we prepare ourselves to receive Christ s body and blood along with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. This gift received in faith assures us of God s love, strengthens our faith, and empowers us for godly living. 8

M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. He sends the Holy Spirit to testify that we are his children and to strengthen us when we are weak. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY 9

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat. This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. LAMB OF GOD This beautiful song summarizes the redeeming work of Christ and prepares our hearts and minds for communion. It has been sung in the liturgy since about 700 AD. 10

DISTRIBUTION Guests: Living Savior practices member communion. We do this because the Bible teaches that not only do we receive Christ s true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins in Holy Communion, but we are also confessing a oneness in the faith. For this reason, if you are not a member of Living Savior or the WELS, we want to give you a chance to learn what we believe and teach before we ask you to join us for communion. Please speak to Pastor if you are interested in joining us for communion in the future. Thank you. THANK THE LORD BLESSING M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. CLOSING HYMN Almighty Father, Bless the Word 323 11
