Deacon Lachlan This week we celebrated the feast day of Pope Saint Pius X. There have been 12 popes named Pius... the first Pope Saint Pius I in the second century the latest, Pope Pius XII reigning from 1939 to 1958. Pope St. Pius X, reigned for a little more than 11 years from 1903 to 1914, and used his motto.instaurare Omnia in Christo, or "to restore all things in Christ" to guide his papacy. He lived simply, stating that he had been born poor, had lived poor and wanted to die poor. He had a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and wrote an encyclical on the 50 th anniversary of the proclamation of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. Pius X was born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto on June 2, 1835, in what was then the Kingdom of Lombardy. As a parish priest and then bishop he had more pastoral experience than previous popes, and he also taught theology in the seminary. Pius X encouraged frequent reception of Holy Communion and earlier First Communion. Until then, First Holy Communion had been delayed until the teenage years..but he moved it to the age of reason, about seven years old when a child could accept the doctrine of the Real Presence of Jesus, Body, Blood, Soul and (Pope Saint Pius reading in the Vatican gardens) Divinity in the Eucharist. He is sometimes called the Pope of the Blessed Sacrament. He also began the process of revising and regularizing the Code of Canon Law for the universal Church and, because of his pastoral experience, required the teaching of catechism classes in every parish in the world, establishing the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Pope Pius X described the duties of a catechist in his 1905 encyclical, Acerbo Nimis.. At this very troubled and difficult time : The task of the catechist is to take up one or other of the truths of faith or of Christian morality and then explain it in all its parts; and since amendment of life is the chief aim of his instruction, the catechist must needs make a comparison between what God commands us to do and what is our actual conduct. After this, he will use examples appropriately taken from the Holy Scriptures, Church history, and the lives of the saints, thus moving his hearers and clearly pointing out to them how they are to regulate their own conduct. He should, in conclusion, earnestly exhort all present to dread and avoid vice, and to practice virtue. As a pastor, Pius X knew this material had to be taught so that the students, both young and old, would understand it, but he also required that the catechesis be comprehensive and complete. The catechetical instruction should be divided in such a way that treatment will be given to the Apostles' Creed, the Sacraments, the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer and the Precepts of the Church. Words of wisdom from a great saint words which we follow here at Holy Spirit Religious Education. (Pius seen here shortly before he died) May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-

The words of Jesus disciples in today s Gospel must sound familiar. At some point in our lives, you and I have said it about some article of our faith. Christianity makes firm demands on our ethical behavior and gives no easy answers for suffering. Many disciples were confused and dismayed by Jesus words in the Bread of Life Discourse. Not all of them, however, had the same reaction. When the disciples question Jesus teaching, He confirms its truth. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. For some, Jesus reassurance was not enough. These disciples do not question Jesus further or wrestle with their lack of understanding. The mighty deeds Jesus has done fade to the background. Many of His disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied Him. For them, their doubt proves too much. Jesus turns to the Twelve, knowing that confusion lives in their hearts as well. Peter answers. Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God. Notice this is not a confession of perfect understanding. It is a confession of faith in Jesus. The precise words may still confuse them, but they believe the One who said them. In our own lives, we face doubt, confusion, and disillusionment in our Christian faith. The same choice available to the disciples is available to us. Do you have faith in Jesus, even when you lack perfect understanding? Will you stay or will you go? What do you do with your doubt? PARISH OFFERING The collection for last week, Sunday, August 19 th, 2018 was $8,543 Your kindhearted generosity to Holy Spirit Church is very much appreciated. In today s second reading, St. Paul reminds us that, blessed by the Lord, the good steward should give thanks to God the Father always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Banns of marriage Second Time: Ashley Dempsey and Thomas Burke -8
