Page Three St. Charles Borromeo Church May 11, 2014 GOD OUR FATHER, ATTUNE OUR MINDS TO THE SOUND OF HIS VOICE, LEAD OUR STEPS IN THE PATH JESUS HAS SHOWN, THAT WE MAY KNOW THE STRENGTH OF HIS OUT- STRETCHED ARM AND ENJOY THE LIGHT OF YOUR PRESENCE FOREVER. Opening Prayer... 4th Sunday of Easter The gospel passages these last couple of weeks in the Easter Season have reminded us that the Risen Jesus was not only present to the early Church, but continues to be present in the thoughts and lives of those who follow Him today. When our lives are full of turmoil, when we feel fragile and vulnerable, when there seems to be no relief from the struggles that we have, Jesus is present with us as the Good Shepherd. The valleys of darkness we struggle through are made easier through His Word and His Sacramental Presence in our lives. Situations that seem to be so difficult in this world are made easier when measured with eternity and the citizenship Jesus calls us to embrace. Sometimes we need to put those earthly worries to rest and allow ourselves to rest in the presence of the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep and whose sheep know Him. Jesus tells His disciples today that, I am the gate (for the sheep). Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly. (Jn 10: 9 10) When Jesus spoke about a life hereafter, Thomas was confused about what he meant. Jesus had to remind him: Thomas, do you not know that I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6) Jesus is the way to the Father. He is not only the good shepherd, but the gate for the sheep. The Easter Season is a time to remind ourselves more closely that we must keep our lives connected with Jesus. This Easter Sunday is generally called Good Shepherd Sunday. We entrust our lives to the care of the good shepherd. May is an important month in the sacramental life of the Church. This weekend over sixty of our second graders will make their First Holy Communion. Next Saturday, another 60 will approach the Eucharistic table for the first time. This is such a special time for our children who are coming to receive Jesus for the first time. We pray for all our children, especially those receiving Communion for the first time. May they always stay close to Jesus the good shepherd. We also have over sixty teenagers and 27 adults receiving Confirmation in May. We pray that they will always remain dedicated to the Holy Spirit as a helper and guide in life. A special thanks to all the adults and youth ministers who helped with our Sacrament program this year! You are such a blessing to us as a family of faith. (continued on page 7)

Safeguard the Children HOW OLD DOES A CHILD NEED TO BE IN ORDER TO STAY ALONE? Don t assume that when your child knows what you are saying, he is ready to walk out the door by himself. Many states have laws against leaving children of certain ages alone, but experts say children should not be left by themselves until they are capable of fighting off an abductor or handling a crisis situation. They also say children do not have the mental maturity to cross busy streets by themselves until they are about 10-12 years old. Finally, parents who are certain their young children would never walk away with a stranger will be shocked to learn that studies show they probably will. Stay alert and vigilant, even if you believe your child is aware of possible dangers from others. For particular help, call the Archdiocese s Victims Assistance Ministry, 213-637-7650. BORN TO HEAVEN Born To Heaven is a bereavement support group for those who have suffered from pregnancy loss, still-birth, or infancy loss. (continued from page 3) Here at St. Charles we dedicate the Month of May to the Blessed Mother. During the month, the rosary is recited after all the weekday Masses and before the 5 pm Mass on Saturdays. Traditionally, the children in the school have their May procession and the crowning of the Blessed Mother. We are blessed to have a special reminder of Mary's devotion to Jesus in the shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Hope on the corner of Lankershim Blvd. and Moorpark Street. "0 dearest mother, through your most powerful intercession may my heart be filled with Holy Hope, so that in life's darkest hour I may never fail to trust in God my Savior..." Mary is our reminder of complete devotion to Jesus Her Son. Today is also our annual celebration of Mother's Day. How blessed we are when we can look to own earthly mothers and find a faith that follows the example of Mary, always pointing her children to Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life. How blessed we are when our mother is a woman of faith, reminding us by her own example that Jesus is the one who shepherds us in times of turmoil and confusion. We thank God for our mothers today. May those who are living know of our prayers and love. May those who are deceased rest in peace! Sincerely yours in Christ, Monsignor Robert J. Gallagher
