Holy Spirit Parish Blue Mass GOSPEL MEDITATION 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Judgment tends to have a bad reputation. We often associate it with condemnation and, in the Gospels, we associate it with the Pharisees. Today's Gospel features the Pharisees doing exactly what we expect. "They observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands." The Jewish people had strict purification laws that applied to all areas of life. The Pharisees attempt to accuse Jesus of not following the ancestral traditions. Jesus doesn't take offense at their judgments per se. He instead points out the hypocrisy of their words. "You hypocrites! These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me." From there, Jesus turns his attention to the concerns of the heart. "The things that come from within are what defile." He lists off a number of sins, including some the Pharisees were likely struggling with, including evil thoughts, envy, and arrogance. When we examine the list, perhaps we're reminded of our own trips to the confessional! As we strive to follow Jesus and live with integrity, we must be aware of our hearts. We must judge our own actions. Are they leading us closer to God or away from Him? Are we growing in love of our neighbor, or are we becoming more closed in on ourselves? As we move into this week, consider the state of our own heart. Perhaps you are overly scrupulous in less important areas. Perhaps there are large areas of overlooked sin that you've excused for too long. Whatever it is, the judgment of God need not cripple us. He offers us a share in His mercy as soon as we turn to Him. This week, allow your heart to be transformed! Bishop Robert P. Deeley will celebrate the Blue Mass on Sunday, September 16, at 10:30 AM, at the Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul on 122 Ash Street in Lewiston. The Mass annually recognizes the dedication and self-sacrifice of active and retired law-enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency personnel. Blessings will be bestowed upon all who contribute to the public health and safety of Maine, and prayers will be offered for those who have given their lives in the line of duty. Members of EMS, fire, law enforcement, and other public safety agencies are asked to wear their uniforms to the Mass. Both the Maine State Police and Public Safety Pipe and Drum Corps will perform before and after the Mass. People of all faiths are encouraged to attend this celebration. A reception will follow. To learn more about the Blue Mass, including its history in the diocese, visit www.portlanddiocese.org/bluemass2018. SACRAMENTS Baptism: Please call for an appointment. September 2, 2018 The Faith Formation Team invites you Our parish is blessed with an amazing group of volunteers who are helping to form the faith of our parish children. We need catechists (teachers) and assistants for several grades at both church sites, as well as people to serve as faith techs to provide extra assistance to children with disabilities. The faith formation office invites you to think and pray about whether you might be called by the Holy Spirit to assist in the faith formation of our children. Being a catechist, assistant, or faith tech is a wonderful opportunity to give back to our faith community, and to share the love of Jesus with the next generation of Catholics. There are openings for people with all levels of knowledge, abilities, and time. Some classes are held on Sunday mornings and others on Monday afternoons. Materials and support are provided, as are training and background checks. Classes begin on September 23 rd. To volunteer, or FMI, please contact Carolyn Houston at 985-6252, 646-5605, or at carolyn.houston@portlanddiocese.org. Faith Formation for the 2018-2019 Academic Year Registration for youth faith formation (religious education) for the 2018-2019 academic year for kindergarten through high school will begin on September 1st. Youth classes begin on September 23rd with Sunday morning sessions at both St. Martha & St. Mary for kindergarten through high school, and a Monday afternoon session at St. Mary s for grades 1-6. Classes are provided for children of all abilities. Children with developmental, intellectual, sensory, physical, or behavioral disabilities are welcome and encouraged to attend! Registration is required for all children, regardless of age, or whether they have participated in Faith Formation at Holy Spirit Parish previously. First Communion and Confirmation preparation is a two-year process (typically in 1 st & 2 nd grade) in the Diocese of Portland. Families are encouraged to enroll their pre-school and kindergarten-aged children in the parish programs in order to develop familiarity with faith formation prior to the sacramental-preparation years. Faith Formation Family Handbooks (which contain an academic calendar, a description of programs and policies, and other faith formation-related information) with registration forms will be available in the church offices, in the narthexes, and on our website at www.holyspiritme.org, beginning September 1st. FMI, contact Carolyn Houston at 646-5605, 985-6252, or carolyn.houston@portlanddiocese.org. A Parish that Welcomes People with Disabilities The National Directory for Catechesis states that, "The whole community of faith needs to be aware of the presence of persons with special needs within it and be involved in their catechesis" (NDC, 49). Catholics believe that all people are made in the image and likeness of God, and that all the baptized share in the life and mission of the Church. This includes people from every range of ability. As a parish, we are mindful and respectful of families who have children with disabilities. At time, due to the behavorial aspects of some atypical conditions, parents of children with disabilities become nervous that their child may not be welcome during the celebration of Mass. As a faith community, let us strive to be patient, respectful, and helpful to individuals with disabilities. Let us also find ways to support and assist their families to make it easier for them to worship together as a family. As brothers and sisters in Christ, each one of us has an essential place at the table, and we are all enriched and blessed by one another as we become one Eucharistic community of faith.
