Lessons // Videos // 2-Month Roster // Leader Contact Info // Leader FB Group // Old Lessons Unit 4 Session 2 The Plagues, the Passover, and the Crossing of the Red Sea BIBLE PASSAGE: Exodus 5-14 MAIN POINT: God proved to the Egyptians that He is the one true God. KEY PASSAGE: Hebrews 3:5-6 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: What is God s plan? God s plan is to rescue His people from captivity. PREPARING FOR THE LESSON 1) PRAY. 2) READ THE VERSES: Exodus 5-14 Hebrews 3:5-6 5 Moses was faithful as a servant in all God s house, bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. 6But Christ is faithful as the Son over God s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory. As you teach the kids this week, highlight the Passover and help them look ahead to the true spotless lamb Jesus, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). 3) WATCH THE VIDEO Bible story video: https://vimeo.com/263797257 Discussion Starter Video: https://vimeo.com/263797388 Optional Songs: https://vimeo.com/261966222 https://vimeo.com/261965934 4) READ/FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE OPENING ACTIVITY ACTIVITY: Pictionary Form 2-3 groups (as class size allows). The first player from each team will come up and be given a word chosen by the leader. Some examples are: blood, frogs, gnats, flies, livestock/cows/bulls/goats,

boils (red dots on people), hail, locusts, darkness, lamb, pharaoh, Moses, the Red Sea. Choose words from this list or your own list that relate to today s story and are appropriate for the age group. The first player from each group should stand on opposites sides of the two-sided boards. Their teams should be placed so they can see their team members drawing on the board (place rolling board in the middle of the room and teams on each side maybe). They should start drawing at the same time, first team to guess the word wins a point. Try to give everyone a turn drawing if possible, however a lot of the younger ones may not want to. Discuss: What is God s Plan? God s plan is to rescue His people from captivity. God s plan to rescue His people included 10 plagues, Moses (name words the kids just drew). Through them, God proved to the Egyptians that He is the one true God. 5) READ/FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE AFTER-STORY ACTIVITIES ACTIVITY: Counting to Passover LOWER PRIMARY: Form a circle. Tell kids to take turns counting from 1 to 10 together. The child who says 10 is out and must sit down. Explain that each child may choose to say one or two consecutive numbers. Play continues until one child is remaining. UPPER PRIMARY: Form pairs of kids. Tell kids to take turns counting from 1 to 10 together. The child who says 10 is out and must sit down. Explain that each child may choose to say one or two consecutive numbers. Challenge the kids to think about the correct strategy they may utilize to win the game. (Hint: The outcome of the game is determined by who says the number 6.) Play continues; form new pairs with remaining players. Play until only one child remains. Discuss: In today s Bible story, there were 10 plagues, and the tenth plague was the most severe. God went through Egypt, and every firstborn male in Egypt died. But the Israelites were safe. At Passover, God spared the Israelites from judgment by requiring the blood of a lamb. Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, and God provided a way for them to escape through the Red Sea. ACTIVITY: Key Passage Show the key passage poster. Lead the kids to read together Hebrews 3:5-6. Moses was faithful as a servant in all God s house, but Christ is faithful as the Son over God s house. And we are his house. Repeat several times. (This will be the first week Upper Primary are seeing the Key Passage). Form 2 teams and each team forms two lines which stand in a formation similar to picture below. Teams practice bounce-passing the ball back and forth between lines as pictured below. Then add saying one word of the verse for each pass. Repeat as needed. For the older groups, when you feel they are ready remove the verse from view and have teams compete to pass the ball, saying a word of the verse with each pass. For small classes, just have one team. For youngers don t worry if they can t get it from memory this week, there are 3 more weeks to go.

ACTIVITY: The Red Sea Show Interactive Story Review See Script attached. Props provided: Moses stick (if I can find 2!), signs for lines (pharaoh and moses) and narrator prompt signs to chorus. ACTIVITY: Plug into God s Power Experiment Instructions: Using a battery, wire, and a light bulb choose one child at a time to come up and try to light the bulb using the battery s power. Do in this order: 1) Have them connect the lightbulb directly to the battery do not use the wire yet (no light) 2) Have them connect the wire to the battery and the wire to the light bulb (no light) 3) Have them come up with other alternatives to see if they can light the bulb Of the many possible combinations, only a couple will result in light, most arrangements are unsuccessful. Discuss: Moses was given the task to lead the Israelites out of slavery and out of Egypt. Could Moses do that on his own? No, he needed God s power to help persuade Pharaoh and to escape. Look at Exodus 9:16 But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth. Look at today s Main Point: God proved to the Egyptians that He is the one true God. He certainly did that with the plagues, the Passover and the parting of the Red Sea! God s power is still available to us today if we are willing to live for Him. If we are the lightbulb, we need the wire, Jesus, to access the power of the battery, God. Connecting to God directly without Jesus won t work. Connecting just to Jesus won t work either. =============================== RUNNING THE LESSON ON THE DAY

RUNNING SHEET 1) Hello! Welcome back! 2) Opening Activity 3) Review 4) Big Picture Our big picture question is, What is God s plan? God s plan is to rescue His people from captivity. We learned that God had a plan to rescue Moses, and He did! God rescued Moses to deliver God s people from captivity. But how did He do it? Let s find out with today s story. 5) Pray 6) Watch the video 7) Discuss the story In today s Bible story, God identified Himself as Yahweh, the God of Israel. And Yahweh has a plan for His people. What is God s plan? God s plan is to rescue His people from captivity. That s right! We learned that God rescued Moses to deliver His people from captivity. Do you remember what God said to Pharaoh through Moses? ( Let My people go, Ex. 5:1) But Pharaoh s heart was hard, and he refused to let God s people go. Now raise your hand if you know the answers to these questions. Ask the following review questions: 1. Why did God send the plagues? (God sent the plagues to punish the Egyptians. He judged them for their sin; Ex. 7:4) 2. What was the last plague? (God would go through Egypt, and every firstborn male in Egypt would die. But the Israelites would be safe; Ex. 11:4-7) 3. What happened at Passover? (God told Israelite families to kill a lamb and sprinkle its blood on the doorposts of their houses so God would see the mark and pass over the house. No one in the Israelites families died; Ex. 12:1-28) 4. How did God s people feel about God after the plagues, the Passover, and the parting of the Red Sea? (They feared God and believed in Him. They believed that He had sent Moses to lead them; Ex. 14:31) 5. What did God prove to the Egyptians? God proved to the Egyptians that He is the one true God. Discuss: God has a purpose for everything He does. Why do you think God allowed the Egyptians to chase the Israelites after they left Egypt? The Bible tells us why. God said, I will receive the glory by means of Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh (Ex. 14:4). Through the plagues and the dividing of the Red Sea, God proved to the Egyptians that He is the one true God. This story shows that God punishes sin. God also helps those who love and trust Him. What is God s plan? God s plan is to rescue His people from captivity. God used Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, and He sent His Son to rescue people from captivity to sin. The Bible says that Jesus is greater than Moses. (Heb. 3:3) People who trust in Jesus escape the penalty of sin and have eternal life. 8) Activities (choose from above)

The Red Sea Show Theme: the Power of God Players: You as narrator, kid for Moses, kid for Pharaoh, the rest for The People Props: signs for Pharaoh, Moses, and Chorus Pick (patient) kids to play Moses and Pharaoh and let Moses and Pharaoh know to say the lines handed to them when you point to them. Let the People (everyone else) know that when you hold up a sign, the OOOOO or AAAAGGGHH sign for example, they should do that noise. Have a couple of practices: And the people cried out! Sign:AAAAGGGGHHHH then they say AAAGGGHHHH. And the wind began to blow! Sign:OOOOOOOOOOOO.then they say OOOOOOOOOO like the wind. If they do it unenergetically the first time say: that was awful, I know you can do better than that and have them try another one or two times until you get some enthusiasm from them. Then you break the news that they have to sing! Sing the following to the tune of Cops theme song (Bad boys bad boys, what you gonna do what you gonna do when they come for you) http://subiaco.church/wp-content/uploads/bad-boys-tune.mp4 Hey Moses Hey Moses, what you gonna do Pharaoh s gonna kill us all our Exodus is through When Pharaoh, King of Egypt, heard the Israelites had fled He called for all his officers and this is what he said. PHARAOH: What have we done? What s going on? I m feeling very nervous. The Israelites are gone and we lost our Hebrew servants. Then Pharaoh had his chariots made ready to attack! His officers and horseman were told to bring them back. It wasn t long before the Hebrews could hear them drawing near They cried out to their leader, Moses, with voices full of fear. Hold up the SING sign Hey Moses Hey Moses, what you gonna do Pharaoh s gonna kill us all our Exodus is through And the people cried out to Moses!

Hold up the AAAGGGHHHH sign AAAAGGGGHHHH They cried out a little louder Hold up the AAAGGGHHHH sign AAAAGGGGHHHH And the people cried out a little higher (make your voice higher)! Hold up the AAAGGGHHHH sign AAAAGGGGHHHH And the people cried out to Moses Soon we will be dead! But Moses hushed the people s cries And this is what he said: MOSES: Be still! Be Still! Do not fear or quiver! God will not abandon us. He s our Deliverer Hold up the SING sign Hey Moses Hey Moses, what you gonna do Pharaoh s gonna kill us all our Exodus is through Moses stood before them all, he lifted up his rod (If Moses doesn t respond: out loud and obviously remind Moses to lift up his staff.. psst Moses lifted up his rod! this is part of the fun) And everybody waited for salvation from their God. And the wind began to blow. Hold up the OOOOOOOOO sign OOOOOOOOOOOO It blew a little louder now Hold up the OOOOOOOOO sign OOOOOOOOOOOO

It blew a little harder now Hold up the OOOOOOOOO sign OOOOOOOOOOOO Hold up the SING sign Hey Moses Hey Moses, what you gonna do Pharaoh s gonna kill us all our Exodus is through But as long as Moses stood there, the wind blew through the night. Until a path was made with walls of water left and right. Sings in same tune as the people if he can MOSES: Hey people! Hey people. Now you got to GO! Our God has delivered us! That s all we need to know! Now Pharaoh s heart was hardened And he knew what he must do. PHARAOH: Don t let them get away from us! We ve got to follow through. As Pharaoh led his Army through the Sea, God did a trick The Lord instructed Moses to lower down his stick. (you can make a silly comment/joke about how Moses was supposed to have held this stick up this whole time as the kid playing Moses has probably put it down by now) Hold up the OH NO! sign OH NO!! And the Egyptians cried out Hold up the OH NO! sign OH NO!! They cried out a little louder: Hold up the OH NO! sign OH NO!!

Until their cries were heard no more! (PAUSE) singing Hey Moses Hey God, thanks for all you do! We re on the other side because our God has seen us through!
