Read Exodus 14:1-14. (Hold your Bible throughout the story.) Do You Know Jesus? God saved the people from Pharaoh. He delivered them from slavery. We are slaves to sin. God wants to deliver us from the slavery of sin. God wants us to live with Him forever. He knew a way for this to happen. He sent His only Son, Jesus, to take your punishment. He died for all the sins that you have done. (John 3:16) Have you asked Him to come into your life? Application God heard the cry of Israel and delivered them from slavery. He made a way for them to pass through the water on dry land. In this way, the Israelites escaped from their enemies, the Egyptians. God made a way for us to be rescued from sin by sending Jesus to die on the cross for us. We can trust Him to take care of us during difficult times. Begin With Prayer When God led the people out of Egypt, He didn t lead them on the simplest road. He took them through the desert to a big sea called the Red Sea. God led them by day with a big cloud and He led them by night with a pillar of fire. The cloud helped shade the people from the heat of the desert during the day. The fire helped warm the people from the cold at night. God protected and took care of His people. When the Pharaoh realized that the Israelites were gone, he changed his mind and decided he wanted them back as slaves! So, he had all his men and chariots chase after the people. He was confident that he would get them back, BUT he was wrong. When the Israelites looked up and saw the chariots, they were scared. They complained to Moses and told him they wished they had stayed in Egypt as slaves! But Moses talked to them and told them that God would protect them, help them, and take care of them. He said, "Don't be afraid. Stand firm. You will see how the Lord will save you today. Do you see those Egyptians? You will never see them again. The Lord will fight for you. Just be still." (Exodus 14:13) The Red Sea was right before them. There was nowhere for the Israelites to run the Egyptians were behind them, and the Red Sea was in front of them. Then God said, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people of Israel to move on. He told Moses to lift his staff. Then God said something really strange. Reach your hand out over the Red Sea to part the water. Then the people can go through the sea on dry ground. God told Moses that He would gain glory because of what would happen to Pharaoh and his army. God said the Egyptians would know that He is the Lord. The angel of God moved behind the people and protected them from the Pharaoh s army. In fact, while it was night on the Pharaoh s side, God made it light for his people all night long. Moses reached his hand out over the Red Sea. All night a great wind blew. It separated the water into two walls. In the middle was a dry walkway. All of God s people walked through the water on dry land! The Israelites made it safely to the other side as the chariots began to ride through the walkway. As they were riding, God made their chariot wheels difficult to turn. The men knew that God was taking care of His people. They ran back to the land shouting, Let s get out of here. God is fighting for them! God told Moses to stretch out his hand over the waters. Suddenly the waters closed. All of Pharaoh s army was killed in the water. Not one Egyptian was left. Israel saw God rescue them from Egypt s power. They saw God s power demonstrated against Egypt. So they had respect for the Lord. They put their trust in Him and in His servant Moses. (Exodus 14:31) Then the people worshipped the Lord for saving them (Exodus 15:1-21). Review 1. How did God lead Israel? (pillar of cloud by day; pillar of fire by night) 2. What did Pharaoh do? (changed his mind and went after the Israelites) 3. What did God do? (protected Israel; parted the Red Sea) 4. What Israel do? Preschool Lesson Read Exodus 14:1-14. (Hold your Bible throughout the story.) Memory verse for younger children: Teacher: Teachers: Cut out figures of Egyptians. Write the memory verse on a blue sheet of paper. Use tape to put the fallen Egyptians in the Red Sea. Talk about the miracles and wonders that God did. Begin With Prayer When God led the people out of Egypt, He didn t lead them on the easiest road. He took them through the hot desert to a big sea called the Red Sea. God led them with a big cloud by day and He led them with a pillar of fire by night. The cloud helped shade the people from the heat of the desert during the day. The fire helped warm the people from the cold at night. God took care of His people. When the king realized that the Israelites were all gone, he changed his mind and wanted them back! So, he had all his men and chariots chase after the people. He was sure that he would force the people to come back, BUT he was wrong. When the people looked up and saw the chariots, they were scared. Moses talked to them and told them that God would help them and care for them. All of a sudden they reached a dead end. The Red Sea was right before them. The people began to panic because there was no way of escape from the king s army. (Hand out blue construction paper.) Suddenly, God told Moses to lift his staff. A great wind began to blow. It separated the water into two walls. In the middle was a dry walkway. All of God s people walked through the water on dry land! (Have the kids shake their paper, then divide into two teams. Make two rows with a walkway in between them.) The angel of God moved behind the people and protected them from the king s army. In fact, while it was night on the king s side, God made it light as the people were traveling through the sea. When all the people got to the other side, God told Moses to stretch out his hand over the waters. Suddenly the waters closed. God took care of His people! They were so excited that they began singing songs to God to thank Him for saving them from the evil king. Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus to take our punishment. 3. Ask God to help you trust Him to protect you. Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum for 2011 Lesson 16 Page 5

Learning Activities Memory verse activity Cut out figures of Egyptians. Write the memory verse on a blue sheet of paper. Use tape to put the fallen Egyptians in the Red Sea (blue paper). Talk about the miracles and wonders that God did. Test your memory Bring blue helium balloons. Tie a string on each balloon. Write a key fact on each one. Tie the balloons to the wrists of the children. Allow each child to hold their balloon and step up as you talk about the fact written on the balloon they are holding. As you tell about the Red Sea parting, ask them to release the balloon they are holding to demonstrate the Red Sea Parting. Taste activity Bring a drink that is a blue color. Remind the children that the Israelites walked through the Red Sea on dry land. A fun snack idea is to split a banana into two pieces lengthwise. Put blue Jell-O on each side to illustrate the water. In the middle add crushed graham crackers for the dry land. Remind the children that the Israelites walked through the Red Sea on dry land. Think about it A pillar of fire led the Israelites by night. A pillar of cloud led them in the day. God continually made His presence known. Talk about how we know that God is with us. God parted the Red Sea and made a way for Israel to get away from the Israelites. Talk about how God made a way for us to get away from sin when He sent Jesus to die on the cross for ours sins. The Israelites were leaving the home they had known. Their people had lived in Egypt for 400 years. They had been slaves. Their lives would change dramatically. Talk about what the Israelites might have felt. Moses told Israel, "Don't be afraid. Stand firm. You will see how the Lord will save you today. God saved Israel from their enemies. Talk about how God protects us from our enemies. Touch activity Bring bubbles. Let the children run away from the bubbles. Remind them that Israel crossed on dry ground. Bring a white bed sheet to make a pillar of cloud. Talk to the children about how God made His presence known to Israel protecting them with the pillar of cloud. (Be sure to explain that we don t really know what the pillar of cloud looked like.) Run and play Put the children into three groups. Bring two blue bed sheets, or blue construction paper. Have two groups form the walls of the Red Sea. Ask the third group to run through the Red Sea. Take turns so that everyone gets to run through the Red Sea. Listen As the children take time for silence, remind them that God wants to protect us. Sing Sing God Will Make a Way, Pharaoh, Pharaoh, or another song related to the story. Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum for 2011 Lesson 16 Page 7

Rooted and Grounded Pray Thank God for sending Jesus to make a way for us to be saved from our sins. Ask God to help you trust Him to help you when you are having hard times. Pray for those who do not know Jesus. Read the Bible Daily This week, read Exodus 13-15. Think About It The Israelites got scared when they saw the Egyptian army coming after them! They told Moses they wished they had stayed in Egypt as slaves! They forgot that God was on their side. When we are facing scary or difficult situations, we need to remember that God is on our side. Romans 8:31 says, If God is for us, who can be against us? Do It The Israelites sang a song of praise to God after He saved them from their enemies (You can read this in Exodus 15:1-21). Try writing a letter of praise to God, and thank God for the things He has done for you. Tell About It Share the Bible story with a friend. Talk about how God still takes care of us today like He did in the Bible. Ask your friend if they would like to know more about having Jesus in their life. You may want to have them talk to your Bible study teacher if they are interested. Change it The Israelites complained to Moses when they were afraid. Many times we complain when things are not going our way. Ask God s forgiveness for complaining (See Philippians 2:14). Next time, instead of complaining, try thinking of things you are thankful for. It s amazing how that changes your heart! Study it Attend Bible study this week. Read a chapter out of Psalms and Proverbs each day. Also, read Romans 8:31-39, which talks about the victory that we have as followers of Christ. Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum for 2011 Lesson 16 Page 8
