ROMANS: A FIRM FOUNDATION The REAL New Deal Romans 5:1-11

ROMANS 5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not disappoint

us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God s wrath through him! 10 For if, when we were God s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

5 BLESSINGS OF JUSTIFICATION

1. WE HAVE PEACE WITH GOD Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, Peace represents more than a cessation of hostility. A set of favorable circumstances involving peace and tranquility Louw, J. P., & Nida, E. A.

2. WE HAVE ACCESS TO GOD 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.

And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3. WE HAVE HOPE

4. WE HAVE ONGOING CONFIDENCE Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.

5. WE EXPERIENCE THE LOVE OF GOD 5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

TO GO: How has justification changed the way that you view God? How does justification change the way that you see your life? What is your default response when you are suffering? How should we view suffering according to Paul? What difference should this make?

14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen us with power through his Spirit in our inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith. And I pray that as we are rooted and established in love, 18 that we may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses

knowledge that we may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!
