[NEW SONG FELLOWSHIP : BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING] Jason Kelly 1 BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING AS THE SALT OF THE EARTH & THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD I. BEING PERFECT: TO WALK OUT THE 8 BEATITUDES A. The Sermon on the Mount is the constitution of God s Kingdom. It is the litmus test to measure spiritual development and ministry impact. We measure our impact by how much people walk out the Sermon on the Mount values (not by the size of our congregation or ministry budget). These values are to be the themes that we most emphasize. B. Jesus defined being perfect or being complete in obedience as walking out the 8 beatitudes (Mt. 5:3-12) as we pursue 100-fold obedience (Mt. 5:48). This is our foundational call in life. We cannot focus on walking out the Sermon on the Mount without being very familiar with it. The 8 beatitudes do not make sense separated from the context of pursuing 100-fold obedience. 48 You shall be perfect as your Father is perfect. (Mt. 5:48) C. The beatitudes are like 8 beautiful flowers in the garden in our heart that God wants to fully blossom. They define love, godliness and spiritual maturity and describe life in the Spirit (true discipleship and/or spiritual maturity). They also describe how God wants to bless us and what He wants to duplicate in the nations through ministry. D. These 8 flowers need to be carefully and continually cultivated as we weed our garden by resisting the 6 negative influences (toxins/poisons) related to our natural lusts [(anger (5:21-26), immorality (5:27-30), disregarding the sanctity of marriage (5:31-32), not keeping our commitments (5:33-37), retaliation (5:38-42), and passivity in loving our enemies (5:43-47)] and as we water our garden by pursuing the 5 positive nutrients (prayer, fasting, giving, serving and blessing enemies, Mt. 6:1-18) that position us to receive a greater impartation of grace. II. BEATITUDES: ONLY WAY TO BLESSEDNESS (HAPPINESS, GREATNESS, FREEDOM) A. Jesus revealed 8 beatitudes or 8 attitudes that release blessedness on our lives. To be blessed is to experience abundant life, which is the happiness, greatness and freedom that God created us for. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. (Jn. 10:10) B. We need a revelation that only in the beatitudes, can we experience abundant life. Our natural mind cannot see this without the aid of the Spirit. The natural mindset thinks that happiness is best found through favorable circumstances (money, honor, comfort, influence and ability, etc.). 17 Blessed are you, Simon for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 On this rock I will build My church... (Mt. 16:17-18) C. By revelation, we conclude that the Sermon on the Mount lifestyle is not just the best way to experience abundant life (happiness, greatness and freedom) but it is the only way.

2 [NEW SONG FELLOWSHIP : BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING] Jason Kelly III. THE BEATITUDES: BRIEF DEFINITIONS AND REVELATION OF JESUS IN THEM A. Being poor in spirit (theirs is the kingdom, Mt. 5:3) to acknowledge that we are in great need of help to sustain wholeheartedness (Mt. 5:48). This is to understand, that we are in a serious dilemma in needing a breakthrough in our heart (insight/power) and ministry in godliness. *Jesus was totally dependent upon the Father and therefore is entrusted with the authority to be King of Kings. (Philippians 2:5-11) B. Mourning for breakthrough (for they shall be comforted, Mt. 5:4) to be desperate enough to be extreme in pursuit of a progressive breakthrough in our heart (insight/power) and ministry. *Jesus mourned with those who mourned, but also went the extreme measure of taking on flesh that breakthrough might occur throughout the earth. C. Walking in meekness (shall inherit the earth, Mt. 5:5) to walk in the fasted lifestyle or to have a servant spirit in the use of our strengths (time, money, energy, influence, authority, resources). *Jesus walked in utmost meekness as God in the flesh. D. Hungering for righteousness (for they shall be filled, Mt. 5:6) sustained faithfulness in seeking God with wholeheartedness through the changing seasons of our life instead of being burned out by our disappointments with God or by our offense at the way people treat us. *Jesus did not give way to bitterness or rejection but gave everything in wholehearted love. E. Relating to others with mercy (for they shall obtain mercy, Mt. 5:7) having a tender spirit in how we treat others who fail spiritually as well as those who actively attack, passively resist or disappoint us. *Jesus healed the Roman guard who came to arrest Him F. Being pure in heart (they shall see God, Mt. 5:8) breakthrough of purity in our thoughts (bitterness, immorality) and motives (helping people for their benefit without any personal gain). To see God even in a small measure causes our spirit to be bright (i.e., fascinated with God). *Jesus, being pure in heart, sees God and perfectly reveals God unto us G. Becoming an anointed peacemaker (called sons of God, Mt. 5:9) anointing to bring peace (healing, restoration) to that which is out of God s will (broken relationships, sick bodies, etc.) *Jesus will bring peace to all nations as the Prince of Peace, and is called the Son of God. H. Enduring persecution (theirs is the kingdom, Mt. 5:10-12) bearing the counterattack for plundering Satan s Kingdom because we operate in power and/or stand for righteousness. We rejoice for the glory of knowing Jesus and the privilege of suffering for His name. (Acts 5:41). *Marred more than any man, His is the kingdom of heaven! I. We notice a trend in that the first three beatitudes begin the process of transformation in that we perceive ourselves differently, or rightly, in that we have great need. Our heart posture from that place positions us to receive grace from heaven to sustain zeal as we break through in mercy, purity, anointed service, and endurance to run the race with consistency as a lifestyle.

[NEW SONG FELLOWSHIP : BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING] Jason Kelly 3 IV. GOD S PURPOSE FOR BELIEVERS AS THE SALT OF THE EARTH You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. (Matthew 5:13) A. Jesus called believers to fulfill their unique role as the salt of the earth (Mk. 9:49-50; Lk. 14:34-35). What qualities, if lost, make salt worthless and fit only to be thrown out and trampled on? B. Salt has several qualities: 1. Salt seasons, requiring only a small amount to set the flavor in food or drink by removing negative qualities (coffee bitterness) and drawing out positive qualities (flavor, sweetness, Song. 4:1-5). Believers are to be a spiritual seasoning that enhances the quality of life in a tasteless world (Job 6:6). Salt was in sacrifice (Lev. 2:13; Mk. 9:49). 2. Salt preserves perishable items, guarding them from being destroyed through decay. Before the invention of the refrigerator, people cured various meats to preserve them. Believers are to act as a supernatural preserving agent in a world vulnerable to moral and societal decay (Gen. 18:16-19:29). 3. Salt heals. It has therapeutic properties for the entire body: regulates the body s water content; effective in stabilizing irregular heartbeats; can lower high blood pressure (with water and other minerals); is a strong antihistamine; vital for extracting excess acidity from cells; an anti-stress element, essential in treating emotional disorders; vital in preventing and treating cancer; helps sleep regulation; vital for diabetics. Salt also kills most germs on contact, thus cleansing wounds to begin the healing process. Believers are to seek out and bring the healing benefits of redemption to a sick and dying world. 4. Salt is a diuretic, causing great thirst in the body. Believers are to live so as to make people around them thirst for something they didn t realize was missing (Rev. 22:17). 5. Salt is a precious commodity. The value of salt was so high in ancient times that Romansoldiers were often paid a salarium (salt as wage), where we get the English word salary and the expression he s worth his salt. The salt trade shaped many ancient trade routes and was often traded ounce for ounce for gold. The ancient Chinese used salt coins as currency, and salt cakes acted as money in Ethiopia. As believers, we are to walk in the confidence of our worth to God, displayed in the price He paid for us (Mt. 13:45-46). 6. Salt is a ratifying agent commonly used in making covenant, thus, the biblical term covenant of salt (Num. 18:19; 2 Chr. 13:5), the Arab expression there is salt between us, and the modern Persian phrase untrue to salt. The Arabic word for salt is the same as the word for a compact or a treaty. Believers enter covenant with God through the mutual sacrifice of laying down of lives (Ps. 50:5) 7. Salt is a de-icing agent, essentially lowering the freezing point of water. Believers help those around them in a cold world by warming their hearts with the power of God s love.

4 [NEW SONG FELLOWSHIP : BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING] Jason Kelly V. THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD SAYS: TAG! YOUR TURN! You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16) A. JESUS IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. (Jn. 1:4-5) Nicodemus (he who came to Jesus by night being one of them said to them, Does our law judge a man before it hears and know what he is doing? They answered and said to him, Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee. Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall have the light of life. (Jn. 7:50-52; 8:12) By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light as shined. (Isaiah 9:1,2) It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, that you should be My salvation to the ends of the earth. (Isaiah 49:6) 23 The city had no sun for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. (Rev. 21:23) God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5) Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (James 1:17) God who lives in unapproachable light (1 Timothy 6:15,16) B. HE NOW SAYS YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD!!! 14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. (Mt. 5:14) Arise, shine: For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold darkness shall cover the earth. And deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. The nations shall come to your light and kings to the brightness of your rising (Isaiah 60:1-3) 9 I will show you the Bride, the Lamb's wife. He showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem having the glory of God. Her light was like a precious stone. (Rev. 21:9-11)

[NEW SONG FELLOWSHIP : BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING] Jason Kelly 5 C. LIGHT REVEALS, GUIDES, AND CAUSES DARKNESS TO FLEE 8 Walk as children of light 14 and Christ will give you light. (Eph. 5:8, 14) 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. (1 Thes. 5:5) 9 The praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Pet. 2:9) D. SAVED NOT BY GOOD WORKS, BUT FOR GOOD WORKS let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16) 1. How is this different than the Pharisees actions? Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, 2 saying: The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses seat. 3 Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. 4 For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. 5 But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. 6 They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, 7 greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi. 8 But you, do not be called Rabbi ; for One is your Teacher, the Christ,[b] and you are all brethren. 9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10 And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. 11 But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. 2. The difference is one of motive and authenticity. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:8-10) 3. The works that glorify God require the power of God Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. Jn 14:12 4. In this way we help others taste (salt) and see (light) that the Lord is good for in Him we live and move and have our being (Psalm 34:8, Acts 17:28)
